John Hughes
1873 - 1932 Composer of "CWN RHONDDA" in Cân a Mawl John Hughes (b. Dowlais, Glamorganshire, Wales, 1873; d. Llantwit Fardre, Wales, 1932) received little formal education; at age twelve he was already working as a doorboy at a local mining company in Llantwit Fardre. He eventually became an official in the traffic department of the Great Western Railway. Much of his energy was devoted to the Salem Baptist Church in Pontypridd, where he served as both deacon and precentor. Hughes composed two anthems, a number of Sunday school marches, and a few hymn tunes, of which CWM RHONDDA is universally known, the tune was composed in 1905 Baptist Cymanfa Ganu (song festival) in Capel Rhondda, Pontypridd, Wales.

1776 - 1805 Person Name: Mrs. Ann Griffiths Author (stanza 2) of "Peraidd ganodd sêr y boreu" in Cân a Mawl Griffiths, Ann, of Dolwar Fechan, Montgomeryshire, was born in 1776, and died in 1805. She composed many beautiful hymns, a collection of which was published (posthumously) in 1806, and also in 1808, under the title of "Hymnau o fawl i Dduw ac i'r oen" ("Hymns of Praise to God and the Lamb"). Several of her hymns rank with the best in the Welsh language. [Rev. W. Glanffrwd Thomas]

1716 - 1776 Author (stanzas 1, 3) of "Peraidd ganodd sêr y boreu" in Cân a Mawl Rhys, Morgan, a famous Welsh hymnwriter of the last century. He published several collections of hymns under quaint titles. Golwg o ben Nebo ar wlad yr Addewid (A View of the land of promise from the top of Mr. Nebo). Frwyd Ysbrydal (The Spiritual Warfare). Graddfanan y Credadyn, &c. (The Groanings of the Believer). He died in 1776, and was buried at Llanfynydd Church, in Caermarthenshire. [Rev. W. Glenffrwd Thomas]
