1835 - 1929 Person Name: Mrs. J. H. Knowles Author of "Low at Thy Cross" Ellin J. Toy Knowles [Mrs. Joseph H. Knowles] The 1903 History of the Newark Female Charitable Society said Knowles’ was from New York City when she addressed the Society in 1886; it also says she was president of the Society in 1893. The 1906 Minutes of the Newark Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church listed Knowles as a minister’s widow. Her works include: Spirit and Life; Selections from Bible Readings, 1899 Heart Talks on Bible Themes (Fleming H.
