Samuel Sebastian Wesley

1810 - 1876 Person Name: S. S. Wesley (1810-76) Composer of "PROVIDENCE" in A Missionary Hymn Book Samuel Sebastian Wesley (b. London, England, 1810; d. Gloucester, England, 1876) was an English organist and composer. The grandson of Charles Wesley, he was born in London, and sang in the choir of the Chapel Royal as a boy. He learned composition and organ from his father, Samuel, completed a doctorate in music at Oxford, and composed for piano, organ, and choir. He was organist at Hereford Cathedral (1832-1835), Exeter Cathedral (1835-1842), Leeds Parish Church (1842­-1849), Winchester Cathedral (1849-1865), and Gloucester Cathedral (1865-1876). Wesley strove to improve the standards of church music and the status of church musicians; his observations and plans for reform were published as A Few Words on Cathedral Music and the Music System of the Church (1849). He was the musical editor of Charles Kemble's A Selection of Psalms and Hymns (1864) and of the Wellburn Appendix of Original Hymns and Tunes (1875) but is best known as the compiler of The European Psalmist (1872), in which some 130 of the 733 hymn tunes were written by him. Composer of "[Jesus, stand among us]" in Hymns of Consecration and Faith In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries.

William Henry Monk

1823 - 1889 Person Name: W. H. Monk Composer of "ADSIS JESU" in The Church Hymnary William H. Monk (b. Brompton, London, England, 1823; d. London, 1889) is best known for his music editing of Hymns Ancient and Modern (1861, 1868; 1875, and 1889 editions). He also adapted music from plainsong and added accompaniments for Introits for Use Throughout the Year, a book issued with that famous hymnal. Beginning in his teenage years, Monk held a number of musical positions. He became choirmaster at King's College in London in 1847 and was organist and choirmaster at St. Matthias, Stoke Newington, from 1852 to 1889, where he was influenced by the Oxford Movement. At St. Matthias, Monk also began daily choral services with the choir leading the congregation in music chosen according to the church year, including psalms chanted to plainsong. He composed over fifty hymn tunes and edited The Scottish Hymnal (1872 edition) and Wordsworth's Hymns for the Holy Year (1862) as well as the periodical Parish Choir (1840-1851). Bert Polman

Timothy R. Matthews

1826 - 1910 Person Name: Rev. T. R. Matthews Composer of "NORTH COATES" in The Book of Common Praise Timothy Richard Matthews MusB United Kingdom 1826-1910. Born at Colmworth, England, son of the Colmworth rector, he attended the Bedford and Gonville Schools and Caius College, Cambridge. In 1853 he became a private tutor to the family of Rev Lord Wriothesley Russell, a canon of St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, where he studied under organist, George Elvey, subsequently a lifelong friend. He married Margaret Mary Thompson, and they had 11 children: Norton, Mary, George, Cecil, Evelyn, Eleanor, Anne, Arthur, Wilfred, Stephen, and John. Matthews served as Curate and Curate-in-Charge of St Mary’s Church, Nottingham (1853-1869). While there, he founded the Nottingham Working Men’s Institute. He became Rector at North Coates, Lincolnshire (1869-1907). He retired in 1907 to live with his eldest son, Norton, at Tetney vicarage. He edited the “North Coates supplemental tune book” and “Village organist”. An author, arranger, and editor, he composed morning and evening services, chants, and responses, earning a reputation for simple but effective hymn tunes, writing 100+. On a request he wrote six tunes for a children’s hymnal in one day. He composed a Christmas carol and a few songs. His sons, Norton, and Arthur, were also known as hymn tune composers. Friedrich Filitz

1804 - 1876 Composer of "BEMERTON" in Renew! Songs and Hymns for Blended Worship Friedrich Filitz PhD Germany 1804-1876. Born at Arnstadt. Thuringia, he was a German composer and musicologist. He collected church music. He also studied philosophy. In 1833 he worked in Berlin as a music critic and at other employment. He was also a music historian. With Ludwig Erck, he published a collection of 15th & 17th Century chorales in 1845. He moved to Munich and published a chorale book in 1847. His legacy of vauable church music was donated to the Bavarian State Library, where it has made many forgotten works available once again. He died in Bonn, Germany. John Perry

1844 - 1903 Person Name: Frederick A. Mann, ? Composer of "VESPER (Mann)" in A. M. E. C. Hymnal See his obituary in The Musical Herald, May 1, 1903. The hymnal Hymns of Prayer and Praise (1921) confirms these birth and death dates, in addition to his composing hymn tunes as listed here. Not to be confused with Frederick Mann, 1846-1928. --Tina Schneider, 01 July 2014. ======================= Mr. F. A. Mann was the musical director of the children’s Home at Victoria Park. He possessed a find conception for music; he gave a “reading” and interpretation to everything he touched, even to a children’s hymn. He composed but little; probably his reserve in this respect was due to his high ideals and his reverence for the great masters. For nineteen years F. A. Mann practiced the musical profession at Lowestoft. Here he was organist successively of the Parish Church of St. Margaret, and of the church at Kirkley. His power as a choir-trainer was soon discovered by other churches, including nonconformists, and by the help of deputies he managed to train three or four choirs abreast. For fourteen years he devoted himself to training the choir of children belonging to the Children’s Home. Mr. Mann understood children; his poetic musical instinct drew forth their powers; he interested them and they needed no spur.
