1807 - 1869 Person Name: R. Park Hymnal Number: 163 Author of "Jesus Spreads His Banner O'er Us" in Sing Unto the Lord Park, Roswell, D.D., of the Protestant Episcopal Church, was born at Lebanon, Connecticut, Oct. 1, 1807, and educated at Union College and West Point. Previous to receiving Holy Orders he was in the army, and also held the appointment of Professor of Chemistry in the University of Pennsylvania. He was ordained in 1843, was President of Racine College, Wisconsin (1852-59), Chancellor of the same College (1858-63); and Principal of a school in Chicago from 1863 to his death. He died at Chicago, July 16, 1869. He published Sketch of West Point, 1840; Pantology, 1841; Handbook for European Travel, 1853; and Poems, 1836. His best known hymn is for Holy Communion. It begins "Jesus spreads His banner o'er us," and was published in his Poems, 1836. It is in common use in Great Britain and America. [Rev. F. M. Ada Blenkhorn

1858 - 1927 Hymnal Number: 78 Author of "Scatter Golden Grain" in Sing Unto the Lord Ada Jane Blenkhorn Canada 1858-1927 Born in Cobourg, Ontario, the 10th of 11 children, she emigrated with her family to the U.S. In 1884 and settled in Cleveland, OH.. She was raised a Methodist, and began writing hymn lyrics at age 34. A prolific writer of hymn lyrics, she was about to give it up when a friend encouraged her to continue, telling her some soul might be saved by a hymn she would write. She worked for many years as secretary to her brother, Henry's, real estate company. After his death in 1923, she became president of the company. She never married. John Perry

William Ellsworth Witter

1854 - 1954 Person Name: W. E. Whitter Hymnal Number: 87 Author of "While Jesus Whispers to You" in Sing Unto the Lord Witter, Will Ellsworth, was born Dec. 9, 1854, near La Grange, New York, and educated at the Genessee State Normal School, New York, and the University of Rochester. From the latter he passed in 1880 to the Rochester Baptist Theological Seminary, and in 1884 he entered the Baptist Ministry. He has written several songs and poems, one of which:— While Jesus whispers to you (The Divine Call) has come into somewhat prominent use. It was written in July 1878, and originated mainly in the great anxiety of the author respecting two of his pupils. In 1878 it was set to music by H. R. Palmer, and included in his Book of Anthems, 1878: from whence it passed into Good as Gold, and I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs and Solos, London 1881. -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

W. Stillman Martin

1862 - 1935 Hymnal Number: 81 Composer of "[All my human weakness feeling]" in Sing Unto the Lord Born: March 8, 1862, Rowley, Massachusetts. Died: December 16, 1935, Atlanta, Georgia. Buried: Westview Cemetery, Atlanta, Georgia. Husband of hymnist Civilla Martin, Stillman attended Harvard University and was ordained a Baptist minister, though he later switched to the Disciples of Christ denomination. In 1916, he became a professor of Bible studies at Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, North Carolina. Three years later, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia. John Burton

1773 - 1822 Hymnal Number: 21 Author of "Holy Bible, Book Divine" in Sing Unto the Lord Burton, John, born 1773, in Nottingham, where he resided until 1813, when he removed to Leicester, at which town he died in 1822. He was a Baptist, a very earnest Sunday School teacher, and one of the compilers of the Nottingham Sunday School Union Hymn Book, 1812. This book reached the 20th edition in 1861. The 1st edition contains 43 hymns which have his signature. He is known almost exclusively by one hymn, "Holy Bible, book divine" (q.v.). He was also author of The Youth's Monitor, and other similar productions for the young. Robert Hall wrote a recommendatory preface to one of his works. [Rev. W. R. Stevenson, M. 1823 - 1915 Hymnal Number: 89 Author of "Lead and Keep Me" in Sing Unto the Lord Harriet E. Rice Jones, 1823-1915 Born: April 18, 1823, Pompey Hollow, Onondaga County, New York. Died: 1915, Binghamton, New York. Buried: Oran Community Church Cemetery, Pompey, Onondaga County, New York. Daughter of Eleazer Rice, Jones lived in Onondaga County, New York. Her girlhood was spent on a farm, receiving what education the country schools and one term at high school could provide. She was always fond of reading, and was a great singer, with a clear ringing voice. On July 7, 1844, she married a son of Rev. Zenas Jones; her husband died in 1879. Her song writing career began when her poetry came to the attention of Dr. M. J. Munger, who asked if she could write some Sunday school hymns for him. She went on to write for Daniel Towner, J. C.
