Horticulturalist and editor of a Wisconsin farm journal. Many of his verses were used to fill empty corners of the journal. He also wrote many books on gardening. 1870 - 1970 Hymnal Number: 92 Author of "Come to Jesus, the Savior" in The Gospel Way Laurene Highfield was born in Quincy, Illinois. She wrote about three hundred hymns and sacred songs, the libretto of one orotorio and several cantatas among other works. NN

Margaret Mackay

1802 - 1887 Hymnal Number: 218 Author of "Asleep in Jesus" in The Gospel Way Mackay, Margaret, was born in 1802, and the only daughter of Captain Robert Mackay, of Hedgefield, Inverness. She was married in 1820 to Major William Mackay, of the 68th Light Infantry (afterwards Lt. Colonel) a distinguished officer who died in 1845. Mrs. Mackay died at Cheltenham, Jan. 5, 1887. In addition to various prose works Mrs. Mackay published Thoughts Redeemed; or Lays of Leisure Hours, 1854, which contained 72 original hymns and poems. [Rev. 1849 - 1919 Hymnal Number: 220 Author of "Workers Together" in The Gospel Way Julia Harriet Johnston, who was born on Jan. 21, 1849, at Salineville, OH, in Columbiana County. Her father was a minister and he mother was a poet. She began writing when she was nine years old but really started writing verse in high school. She lived in Peoria, Ill. Dianne Shapiro, from "The Singers and Their Songs: sketches of living gospel hymn writers" by Charles Hutchinson Gabriel (Chicago: The Rodeheaver Company, 1916)

Thomas Augustine Arne
