b. 1819 Person Name: J. H. Hanaford, alt. and abr. Hymnal Number: a116 Author of "Cast thy bread upon the waters " in Christian Science Hymnal Hanaford, J. H., M.D., born in New Hampton, New Hampshire, Jan. 27, 1819, and educated for the medical profession. He arranged the first edition of Phineas Stowe's Ocean Melodies, 1848, and for it he composed 19 hymns. Some of these are signed "J. H. H.," and others "J. H. Hanaford." One on Setting Sail, "Great God, at Thy command," is specially good for its purpose.

? - 1929 Person Name: Laura C. Nourse, alt. and abr. Hymnal Number: a121 Author of "Now sweeping down the years untold" in Christian Science Hymnal Nourse, Laura C. (?--1929). A resident of Pompey, New York, she studied with Mary Baker Eddy in 1888. She moved to Escanaba, Michigan, in 1893 and to Eau Claire, Wisconsin, in 1897. She was a Christian Science practitioner and teacher from 1890 to 1925.

1820 - 1905 Person Name: Mrs. Livermore, abr. Hymnal Number: a7 Author of "Jesus, what precept is like thine" in Christian Science Hymnal Livermore, Mary Ashton Rice (Mrs. D.P.). (December 19, 1821 [sic]--May 23, 1905). Her husband was a Universalist minister. She was a noted writer, editor, and lecturer; associate director of the Sanitary Commission during the Civil War; and a prominent leader in the causes of temperance and women's suffrage. She published The Story of My Life in 1897. She was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws by Tufts College in 1896. A hymn written by her beginning "Jesus, what precept is like thine" is included in Hymns New and Old, 1895.
