Samuel W. Beazley

1873 - 1944 Hymnal Number: 96 Composer of "[When your trials are o'er won't you meet me]" in Christ Exalted in Song Samuel W. Beazley was born in Sparta, Virginia in 1873. He was a music scholar and taught music at Shenandoah College for five years. He composed over 4,000 gospel songs during his lifetime. Samuel W. Beazley maintained a successful publishing business in Chicago, Illinois. He died in Chicago on September 16, 1944. He was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1992. NN, Hymnary editor. L. L. Pickett

1859 - 1928 Person Name: Rev. L. L. Pickett Hymnal Number: 85 Composer of "[Oh, the joy of sins forgiv'n]" in Christ Exalted in Song Rv Leander Lycurgus Pickett USA 1859-1928. Born at Burnsville, MS, he became a Methodist evangelist. He held meetings in several states and at Holiness campgrounds. After marrying Ludie, they served pastorates in northeast TX, and Columbia, SC, before moving to Wilmore, KY. Pickett married Pruvy Melviney Dorough in 1878, and they had a son, James, in 1880. After her death in 1887, he married Ludie in 1888. He was a renowned speaker, leader, minister, author, hymnwriter, and patriot, prominent in the Holiness Movement, and helped found Asbury College (now University), at Wilmore, KY, where he also served as the financial agent of the board of trustees for many years. The Picketts boarded m,inistry students attending Asbury, among whom was missionary E Stanley Jones. In 1905 a student prayer meeting at the Pickett home spilled out to the Asbury campus in a revival that spread around the town of Wilmore. Between 1891 and 1926 Pickett published 11 song books, some with others, including John Sweney, William J Kirkpatrick, John Bryant, Martin Knapp, Elisha A Hoffman, Burke Culpepper, William Marks, Benjamin Butts, and Robert McNeill. Homer A. Rodeheaver

1880 - 1955 Hymnal Number: 5 Composer of "[Somebody knows when your heart aches]" in Christ Exalted in Song Homer Rodeheaver (1880-1955) was a world renowned evangelist and the music director of Billy Sunday's Evangelistic Campaigns. He was born in Union Furnace, OH. In the Spanish American War he served as trombonist. 1884 - 1974 Person Name: C. B. W. Hymnal Number: 33 Author of "Come and Dine" in Christ Exalted in Song Widmeyer, Charles B. (Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, 1884--California, December 14, 1974). Studied vocal music from age 12 under J.M. Cowgill; at age 15 began teaching classes of his own. First song was written at age 15. The first one published, "Upon the Cross," was written at age 20. Bachelor of Music degree from Bethany-Peniel, Bethany, Oklahoma. Wrote more than 350 songs; edited or contributed to many songbooks. "Come and Dine" was written following the reading of John 21:12 and his meditation on the similarity between the tired, hungry disciples and people of his day both spiritually and physically hungry; translated into Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, and Serbian. --E. William Ellsworth Witter

1854 - 1954 Person Name: W. E. Whitter Hymnal Number: 137 Author of "While Jesus Whispers" in Christ Exalted in Song Witter, Will Ellsworth, was born Dec. 9, 1854, near La Grange, New York, and educated at the Genessee State Normal School, New York, and the University of Rochester. From the latter he passed in 1880 to the Rochester Baptist Theological Seminary, and in 1884 he entered the Baptist Ministry. He has written several songs and poems, one of which:— While Jesus whispers to you (The Divine Call) has come into somewhat prominent use. It was written in July 1878, and originated mainly in the great anxiety of the author respecting two of his pupils. In 1878 it was set to music by H. R. Palmer, and included in his Book of Anthems, 1878: from whence it passed into Good as Gold, and I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs and Solos, London 1881. -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

J. Howard Entwisle

1865 - 1901 Hymnal Number: 24 Composer of "[Once a sinner far from Jesus, I was perishing with cold]" in Christ Exalted in Song J Howard Entwisle USA 1865-1901. Born in PA, he became a musician and songbook editor-compiler in Philadelphia, PA, in the 1890s. He collaberated with William J Kirkpatrick, also of Philadelphia, promoting gospel songs. He helped compile “Songs of love and praise #4”, then later “Songs of love and praise #5”. Other published works were: “Bright melodies” (1899), “Heavenly sunlight” (1900), “Exalted praise” (1901). He died in Philadelphia. John Perry
