James Oren Thompson

1834 - 1917 Person Name: J. O. Thompson Hymnal Number: d26 Author of "The call for reapers" in Best Hymns No. 2 Born June 9, 1834 in Waldo, ME. He was a minister before joining the army and fighting in the Civil War. After the war he joined the Methodist Episcopal Maine Conference in 1866. He transferred to the Providence, RI conference and retired in 1886. He moved to Keyser, WV and edited The Mountain Echo. He then moved to Charleston, WV and served as secretary of the Agriculture. John Parker

1825 - 1911 Hymnal Number: d77 Author of "The angels are looking on me" in Best Hymns No. 2 John Parker, born in England, immigrated to the United States about 1847 at the age of 22. He was a Methodist pastor, serving churches in New York and Vermont. He was a chaplain in the U.S. Army during the Civil War. He died in Asbury Park, New York in 1911. b. 1854 Hymnal Number: d40 Author of "I'm trusting, trusting in the promises" in Best Hymns No. 2 McAulay, Neal A. (Nova Scotia, March, 1854--?). Born of Scottish parents "in the English town of Nova Scotia." At age 21 he moved to Boston and from there to Portland, Maine, in 1876. Converted in 1877; went to Chicago in 1882, and entered McCormick Theological Seminary in 1883 (B.D., 1886). Pastorates in Presbyterian churches in Wilton, Iowa (1886-1907) and Lyons, Louisiana (1907-?). In 1889 began writing gospel hymns. --Gabriel, Charles H. (1916). Singers and Their Songs. Josiah Hopkins

1786 - 1862 Person Name: Josiah Hopkins Hymnal Number: d107 Author of "O turn ye [you], O turn ye [you], for why will ye [you] die" in Best Hymns No. 2 Hopkins, Josiah , D.D., was born at Pittsford, Vermont, April 13, 1786. From 1809 to 1830 he was pastor of a Congregational Church, at New Haven, Vermont; and from 1830 to 1848 of the First Presbyterian Church, Auburn, New York. He died at Geneva, New York, July 27, 1862. He was the editor of Conference Hymns , Auburn, 1846, and contributed hymns to the Christian Lyre , N. Y., 1830. From the latter work his hymns in common use are taken:— 1. 0 turn ye, 0 turn ye, for why will ye die. Expostulation. 2. Why sleep we, my brethren. Expostulation. [Rev. F. M. William Ellsworth Witter

1854 - 1931 Person Name: Will E. Witter Hymnal Number: d157 Author of "Come, sinner, come" in Best Hymns No. 2 Witter, Will Ellsworth, was born Dec. 9, 1854, near La Grange, New York, and educated at the Genessee State Normal School, New York, and the University of Rochester. From the latter he passed in 1880 to the Rochester Baptist Theological Seminary, and in 1884 he entered the Baptist Ministry. He has written several songs and poems, one of which:— While Jesus whispers to you (The Divine Call) has come into somewhat prominent use. It was written in July 1878, and originated mainly in the great anxiety of the author respecting two of his pupils. In 1878 it was set to music by H. R. Palmer, and included in his Book of Anthems, 1878: from whence it passed into Good as Gold, and I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs and Solos, London 1881. -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)
