L. L. Pickett

1859 - 1928 Hymnal Number: 4 Arranger of "[Nahe dich uns, Herr Jesu]" in Lobe den Herrn! Rv Leander Lycurgus Pickett USA 1859-1928. Born at Burnsville, MS, he became a Methodist evangelist. He held meetings in several states and at Holiness campgrounds. After marrying Ludie, they served pastorates in northeast TX, and Columbia, SC, before moving to Wilmore, KY. Pickett married Pruvy Melviney Dorough in 1878, and they had a son, James, in 1880. After her death in 1887, he married Ludie in 1888. He was a renowned speaker, leader, minister, author, hymnwriter, and patriot, prominent in the Holiness Movement, and helped found Asbury College (now University), at Wilmore, KY, where he also served as the financial agent of the board of trustees for many years. The Picketts boarded m,inistry students attending Asbury, among whom was missionary E Stanley Jones. In 1905 a student prayer meeting at the Pickett home spilled out to the Asbury campus in a revival that spread around the town of Wilmore. Between 1891 and 1926 Pickett published 11 song books, some with others, including John Sweney, William J Kirkpatrick, John Bryant, Martin Knapp, Elisha A Hoffman, Burke Culpepper, William Marks, Benjamin Butts, and Robert McNeill. He died at Middlesboro, KY. John Perry

C. G. Gläser

1784 - 1829 Hymnal Number: 128 Composer of "[Es geht durch alle Lande]" in Lobe den Herrn! Carl Gotthelf Gläser Germany 1781-1829. Born at Weissenfels, Burgenlandkreis, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany, he received musical training from his father, after which he attended St. Thomas school in Leipzig. He became an author and composer. At Barmen he taught voice, piano, and violin. He also wrote and conducted chorale music. He died at Barmen. John Perry

George William Warren

1828 - 1902 Person Name: G. W. Warren Hymnal Number: 138 Composer of "[Herz, laß doch das Sorgen sein!]" in Lobe den Herrn! George W. Warren (b. Albany, NY, 1828; d. New York, 1902) received his general education at Racine College in Wisconsin, but as a musician he was largely self-trained. An organist in a number of Episcopal churches, he played the organ for thirty years (1870-1900) at St. Thomas Church in New York City. Warren composed anthems and liturgical service music; his hymn tunes were collected in Warren's Hymns and Tunes as Sung in St. Thomas Church (1888). Bert Polman

Ada Blenkhorn

1858 - 1927 Hymnal Number: 119 Author of "Laß die liebe Sonne ein" in Lobe den Herrn! Ada Jane Blenkhorn Canada 1858-1927 Born in Cobourg, Ontario, the 10th of 11 children, she emigrated with her family to the U.S. In 1884 and settled in Cleveland, OH.. She was raised a Methodist, and began writing hymn lyrics at age 34. A prolific writer of hymn lyrics, she was about to give it up when a friend encouraged her to continue, telling her some soul might be saved by a hymn she would write. She worked for many years as secretary to her brother, Henry's, real estate company. After his death in 1923, she became president of the company. She never married. John Perry

Phoebe Palmer

1807 - 1874 Hymnal Number: 78 Author of "Der offene Born" in Lobe den Herrn! Palmer, Phoebe, an American Methodist, b. 1807, and d. in 1874, wrote "Blessed Bible! how I love thee" (Holy Scriptures), and “O! when shall I sweep through the gates" (Heaven Anticipated). George C. Hugg

1848 - 1907 Person Name: Geo. C. Hugg Hymnal Number: 142 Composer of "[Keinen so treu hab ich je gefunden]" in Lobe den Herrn! George Crawford Hugg USA 1848-1907. Born near Haddonfield, NJ, he became choirmaster at the Berlin, NJ, Presbyterian Church at age 12. At age 14 he published his first song, “Walk in the light”, which became very popular. He married Anne E Ketchum, and they had a daughter, Evangeline. He served as choirmaster of the Tabernacle Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, and also the Broad Street and Arch Street Methodist Episcopal Churches there. He was also closely associated with the Harper Memorial Presbyterian Church there. He was a prolific composer with over 2000 works, publishing 18 books of revival and Sunday school music, and 90 songs for special occasions (Christmas, Easter, etc.). He died in Philadelphia, PA. 1834 - 1910 Hymnal Number: 80 Author of "Mein Vater ist reich" in Lobe den Herrn! Hattie (Katie) Eugenia Peck Buell USA 1834-1910. Born in Cazenovia, NY, she lived in Manlius, NY, until 1898, then moved to Washington, D.C., but maintained a summer residence at Thousand Island Park, NY. She married Willard Barnes Buell, and they had two sons. Her husband died in 1905. She wrote poems to the Northern Christian Advocate in Syracuse, NY. John Perry

Joseph P. Holbrook

1822 - 1888 Person Name: Jos. P. Holbrook Hymnal Number: 54 Composer of "[An dein Herz, das treu mich liebt]" in Lobe den Herrn! Joseph P. Holbrook was a tune writer in the parlor music style, and used the popular melodies of Mason and Hastings, Bradbury and Root, Greatorex and Kingsley in his collections.
