J. Alfred Schehl

1882 - 1959 Person Name: J. Alfred Schehl (1922-1959) Scripture: Luke 2:1-20 Harmonizer of "IHR KINDERLEIN, KOMMET" in Common Praise (1998) J. Alfred Schehl was a prominent Cincinnati composer, choirmaster, and church organist. At age 16, he was employed as an organist at St. Stanislaus Church and became a violinist with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. He attended Xavier University and the Cincinnati College of Music before studying in Rome for a year. In 1906, Schehl was appointed as the assistant conductor of the famed May Festival. He served at St. John Church and Holy Trinity Church before settling at St. Lawrence in 1912, where he remained for 47 years. J. Alfred Schehl compiled and edited the St. Cecilia Hymnal, the official hymnal of several Catholic archdioceses. Additionally, he wrote over fifty major compositions—both sacred and secular—including eight masses, several motets, and numerous volumes of organ music. His music was heard around the world and was performed in various churches, regardless of creed.

John Darwall

1732 - 1789 Person Name: John Darwall (1731-1789) Scripture: Luke 2:1-20 Composer of "DARWALL" in Common Praise (1998) John Darwall (b. Haughton, Staffordshire, England, 1731; d. Walsall, Staffordshire, England, 1789) The son of a pastor, he attended Manchester Grammar School and Brasenose College, Oxford, England (1752-1756). He became the curate and later the vicar of St. Matthew's Parish Church in Walsall, where he remained until his death. Darwall was a poet and amateur musician. He composed a soprano tune and bass line for each of the 150 psalm versifications in the Tate and Brady New Version of the Psalms of David (l696). In an organ dedication speech in 1773 Darwall advocated singing the "Psalm tunes in quicker time than common [in order that] six verses might be sung in the same space of time that four generally are." Franklin L. Sheppard

1852 - 1930 Scripture: Luke 2:1-20 Adapter of "TERRA BEATA" in Songs of Grace Franklin L. Sheppard (b. Philadelphia, PA, 1852; d. Germantown, PA, 1930) arranged the tune for Babcock's text and published it in the Presbyterian church school hymnal Alleluia (1915), edited by Sheppard (Babcock and Sheppard were friends). After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Sheppard entered the family foundry business in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1875. He was organist at Zion Episcopal Church and later was an elder and music director of the Second Presbyterian Church in Baltimore. President of the Presbyterian Board of Publications, Sheppard also served on the committee that prepared the Presbyterian Hymnal of 1911. In the history of hymnody he is remembered primarily for arranging the tune TERRA BEATA for “This Is My Father's World.” Bert Polman
