1849 - 1919 Hymnal Number: 801 Author of "O God, Great Father, Lord and King" in Lift Up Your Hearts Hoss, Elijah Embree, D.D., Bishop of the Amer. Methodist Episcopal Church South, was born in Washington County, Tenn., April 14, 1849, and graduated at Emory and Henry College, Va., 1869, of which he was subsequently President. He was Professor in Vanderbilt University for some time, and from 1885 to 1890 editor of the Nashville Christian Advocate. His hymn, "O God, great Father, Lord and King " (Holy Baptism), was included in The Methodist Hymnal, N.Y., 1905. [Rev. L. F. Benson, D.D. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, New Supplement (1907) ================ Born: April 14, 1849, Washington County, Tennessee. Died: April 23, 1919, Muskogee, Oklahoma. Buried: Maple Lawn Cemetery, Jonesborough, Tennessee; he was re-interred there in 1924, having originally been buried elsewhere. Hoss graduated from Ohio Wesleyan and Emory & Henry College, Virginia (1869). In 1870, he became an ordained minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. He pastored in Knoxville, Tennessee (1870-72); San Francisco, California (1872-74); and Ashville, North Carolina. From 1876-81, he taught at Martha Washington College, Abingdon, Virginia, then became president of his alma mater, Emory & Henry College. He was also a professor of Church History at Vanderbilt University (1885-90), and edited the Christian Advocate in Nashville, Tennessee (1890-92). In 1902, he became the Methodist bishop of Dallas, Texas. Frank DeVries

Person Name: Frank De Vries Hymnal Number: 782 Versifier of "In God the Father I Believe" in Lift Up Your Hearts Frank DeVries was born in 1929 in Langsa, Indonesia. He grew up in Holland, emigrated to Canada in 1952, and in 1953 married Celia, his childhood sweetheart. He and his wife are the parents of six children, two of which are deceased. After obtaining Royal Conservatory degrees in theory and harmony, Frank and his wife moved to Grand Rapids where Frank graduated from Calvin College in 1962. Upon their return to Canada Frank taught at Pacific Christian School in Victoria, BC, and was principal at the John Knox Christian School in Wyoming, Ontario and the Houston and Vancouver Christian Schools both in BC. The author of two short novels (God. Noun or Verb? in 2006 and Frans in 2008) he has contributed articles to many Christian magazines and periodicals, and as well has composed and had published many children’s songs and hymns. He and his wife currently live in Abbotsford, BC. Canada, where they attend the Gateway Christian Reformed Church. Frank DeVries

John Antes

1740 - 1811 Hymnal Number: 677 Adapter of "MONKLAND" in Lift Up Your Hearts John Antes (b. Frederick, PA, 1740; d. Bristol, England, 1811) was a missionary, watchmaker, business manager, and composer. Born near the Moravian community of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, he was trained at the Moravian boys' school and later received religious education and further training as a watchmaker in Herrnhut, Germany. From 1770 to 1781 he served as a missionary in Egypt and from 1783 until his death was the business manager of the Moravian community in Fullneck, England. Although music was his avocation, Antes was a fine composer and musician. Among his compositions are a number of anthems, several string trios, and over fifty hymn tunes. Bert Polman
