Ophelia G. Adams

1856 - 1949 Person Name: Ophelia Adams Hymnal Number: 118 Author of "Sometime, somewhere" in Christian Joy Ophelia G. Adams was born in 1856 (nee Ophelia G. Browning) She was the daughter of William Garretson Browning, a Methodist Episcopal minister, and Susan Rebecca Webb Browning. She married Thomas E. Burroughs in 1884. He died in 1904. She married Arthur Prince Adams, in 1905. He was a minister. Her poem, "Unanswered yet" which was written in 1879, was published in the The Christian Standard in 1880 with the name F. G. Browning. She also wrote under the name of F. G. Burroughs and Mrs. T. E. Burroughs. DeWitt Clinton Huntington

1830 - 1912 Person Name: D. W. C. Huntington Hymnal Number: 155-B Author of "O think of the home over there, By the side of the river" in Christian Joy Rv DeWitt Clinton Huntington USA 1830-1912. Born at Townsend, VT, one of nine siblings, he attended Syracuse University, NY, and was ordained a Methodist Episcopal minister in 1853. He married Frances Harriett Davis in 1853, and they had three children: Charles, Thomas, and Horace. After her death in 1866, he married Mary Elizabeth Moore in 1868, and they had a daughter, Mary Frances. He pastored in Rochester, NY, (1861-71 & 1876-79), Syracuse, NY, (1873-76), Olean, NY, (1885-89), Bradford, PA, (1882-85 & 1889-91), and Lincoln, NE, (1891-96), where he became a Methodist District Superintendent of relief work. At his pastorate he also personally designed and oversaw construction of a brick sanctuary seating over 1100 people. A depression in 1893 caused him to forego salary for a number of months while pastoring. As things improved, he designed an addition to the church that was finally built two decades later. He was prevailed upon to serve as Chancellor of Nebraska Wesleyan University (1898-1908), at first without pay, and asked more than once to stay after desiring to retire. In 1908 he became Chancellor emeritus and assumed the role of professor of English Bible & Ethics. He also wrote several books, one titled, “Is the Lord among us?”. Another: “Half century messages to pastors and people”. Another: “A documentary history of religion in America since 1877”. He also served on the boards of the local telephone company and Windom Bank. He contracted pleura-pneumonia and died in Lincoln, NE. A Lincoln, NE, street is named for him, as is an elementary school. He was opposed to football, thinking it had no place in a proper Christian institution, but football was re-instituted at the college after his death. John Perry

James Henry Stanley

1869 - 1954 Person Name: James H. Stanley Hymnal Number: 149 Author of "Prepare to meet thy God" in Christian Joy James Henry Stanley, Feb. 2,1869 - June 1, 1954, was a singing school teacher, band director and hymn composer. He died in Saltillo, Miss., where he had been a resident for 60 years.He is buried at Springhill Presbyterian Church in Lee County. S. L. Findlater

1823 - 1907 Person Name: Sarah B. Findlater Hymnal Number: 159-A Author of "God is calling, calling yet" in Christian Joy Sarah Laurie Borthwick Findlater United Kingdom 1823-1907. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, sister of Jane Laurie Borthwick, she married Erick John Findlater, a pastor in the Free Church of Scotland at Lochearnhead, Perthshire, and they had three daughters: Sarah Jemima, Mary Williamina, and Jane Helen. Findlater and her sister Jane's translations were collected in “German hymns from the land of Luther”, appearing in four volumes (1854-1862). As an author, Sarah wrote fiction, juvenile works, music scores, anthems, and musical parts. She died at Torquay, Devon, England. John Perry

Sanford J. Massengale

Hymnal Number: 136 Author of "I don't want to get adjusted" in Christian Joy Sanford Jesse Massengale went to Stamps Music School when it was in Dallas, Texas. In 1929 he graduated. He wrote a total of 1800 church songs. Massengale died in 1992 & is buried in Wetumka, Oklahoma.

William Ellsworth Witter

1854 - 1931 Person Name: Will E. Witter Hymnal Number: 160-B Author of "While Jesus whispers to you" in Christian Joy Witter, Will Ellsworth, was born Dec. 9, 1854, near La Grange, New York, and educated at the Genessee State Normal School, New York, and the University of Rochester. From the latter he passed in 1880 to the Rochester Baptist Theological Seminary, and in 1884 he entered the Baptist Ministry. He has written several songs and poems, one of which:— While Jesus whispers to you (The Divine Call) has come into somewhat prominent use. It was written in July 1878, and originated mainly in the great anxiety of the author respecting two of his pupils. In 1878 it was set to music by H. R. Palmer, and included in his Book of Anthems, 1878: from whence it passed into Good as Gold, and I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs and Solos, London 1881. -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)
