Anne Houlditch Shepherd

1809 - 1857 Person Name: Anne H. Shepherd Hymnal Number: 29 Author of "Around the Throne" in Song Praise Shepherd, Anne, née Houlditch, daughter of the Rev. E. H. Houlditch, sometime Rector of Speen, Berkshire, was born at Cowes, Isle of Wight, Sept. 11, 1809; married to Mr. S. Saville Shepherd in 1843; and died at Blackheath, Kent, Jan. 7, 1857. Her Hymns adapted to the Comprehension of Young Minds were published (3rd ed. 1847 5th ed. 1855), and contained 64 hymns. Of these the following have come into common use:— 1. Around the throne of God in heaven. 2. Glory to Jesus, glory. Praise. 3. Here's a message of love. Invitation. 4. I have read of the Saviour's love. The Love of Christ. 5. See where the gentle Jesus reigns. Jesus, the Children's Friend. Of these hymns the first has by far the widest acceptance, and is found in a large number of children's hymn-books. Her religious novels, Ellen Seymour, 1848; and Reality, 1852, attracted some attention. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

J. W. Dadmun

1819 - 1890 Hymnal Number: 119 Composer of "[In the Christian's home in glory]" in Song Praise Rv John William Dadmun USA 1819-1890. Born at Cambridge, MA, he completed his education at the Wesleyan Academy, Wilbraham, MA. At 22 he joined the New England Methodist Conference and pastored churches in the towns of Ludlow, Southhampton, South Hadley Falls, Enfield, Ware, Monson, Ipswich, and Lowell, the first Methodist Church and Grace Church, Boston and First Church, Boston Highlands. For a number of years he was also prison Chaplain and Superintendent of schools in the city institutions of Boston at Deer Island, off the coast of Maine. He married Lucy Ann Dutton, and they had seven children: Lucy, Wiletta, Francina, Charles,William and two others. He was initiated into Masonry at the Mt. Lebanon Lodge in Boston, MA, and served as Grand Chaplain and District Deputy Grand Master, which he immensely enjoyed. He rose in ranks within the organization and was instrumental in forming the Mt. Vernon Chapter in Roxbury, MA. He was elected Grand High Priest of the Grand Chapter of MA. He was Knighted into the De Molay Commandery in Boston, serving several years and rising to Grand Prelate of MA & RI, and attained to a number of other significant positions within the Masons. In later years, after Lucy died, he married Martha Jane Rogers. He collected songs and contributed lyrics to some, publishing a number of song books: “Army & Navy melodies” (1862), “The Melodian” (1862), “Revival melodies” , “The Eolian harp” (1860), “The sacred harmonium”, “new revival melodies”, “Musical string of pearls”, The Masonic choir” (1864), “The humming bird”, “Union league melodies”, “The new golden chain of Sabbath school melodies”, “The olive leaf”, “The timbrel” (1866), and others. 1881 - 1955 Person Name: B. B. E. Hymnal Number: 45 Author of "I'm Traveling On" in Song Praise Benard Bates Edmiaston Born: July 16, 1881, Bennetts, Baxter County, Arkansas. Died: December 2, 1964, Bronte, Texas. Buried: Fairview Cemetery, Bronte, Texas. Bernard was the son of David W. Edmiaston and Georgia Ann Fluty, and husband of Ella Allen. He studied music under Rufus Turner, Franklin Eiland, W. H. Lawson, Berry McGee, Emmett Dean, G. W. Fields, John Herbert, and many others, and taught singing schools for at least 38 years. George W. Sebren

1882 - 1940 Person Name: G. W. Sebren Hymnal Number: 80 Composer of "[Spotless robes of white we'll wear]" in Song Praise Sebren, George Washington. (Belmont, Sabine Parish, Louisiana, March 8, 1882--January 26, 1940, Asheville, North Carolina). He was the son of Richard Henry and Sarah Jane Sebren. As a small boy he attended singing schools taught by T.J. Lites. He moved with this family to Sabine County, Texas, before he was twelve years old. He attended two sessions of Southern Development Normal, with F.L. Eiland as principal, also one normal under J.L. Moore and one under J.B. Vaughan. He later attended three sessions of the Southern Development Normal at Waco, Texas, under Dr. J.B. Herbert and his associates, graduating from that school in 1906. He also studied at Landon Conservatory of Music, Dallas, Texas, and under D.A. Clippinger, eminent voice teacher of Chicago. He was first principal and teacher of the vocal department of the Southern Development Normal College of Music. He wrote hundreds of songs--both words and music--which have been published in many different books and sung throughout the South. His activities as a singer and teacher took him into every state in the South. He trained and led the first Vaughan Quartet, was teacher of voice and other subjects in the first six annual sessions of The Vaughan School of Music (founded 1909), in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. In his teaching work he was associated with Dr. J.B. Herbert, Emmet S. Dean, B.C. Unseld, E.T. Hilderbrand, and others. Among the songs he written are "My Song of Praise" (better known as "I'm Going Along O'erflowing with Song"), "Be Cheerful All Along," and "I'm on the Right Side Now." He edited and published twelve gospel song books, one quartet book and two books on rudiments of music. He is the author of Ten Lessons in Singing, incorporated in Vaughan's School Songs, used in the public schools in the state of Tennessee. At the time of his death he was active in broadcasting gospel quartets, teaching singing and continuing his composing of sacred songs while operating a bookstore at the same time. He had a thriving business in school books. He was also tenor soloist and music director at several churches in the area.
