(Montreal, Quebec, April 7, 1861--January 19, 1944, Quebec City). Anglican. Bishop's University (Lennoxville, Que.), B.A., 1881; M.A., 1884; D.C.I., 1901. Pastorates (all in Quebec) at Montreal, 1884-1886; Drummondville, 1887-1896; Quebec, 1896-1933. During his time as Canadian Army chaplain on the Western Front (1914-1919), he formed close ties with thousands of soldiers, whose subsequent dispersal all across Canada ensured a warm reception for his writings, and his message. 1806 - 1884 Person Name: Harriet Cecilia Phillips Hymnal Number: d42 Author of "Earth is not our home" in Battle Songs of the Cross Phillips, Harriet Cecilia, was born in Sharon, Connecticut, in 1806, and was for many years an active worker in Sunday Schools in New York city. She contributed five hymns to the Rev. W. C. Hoyt's Family and Social Melodies, 1853, and has also written for various magazines. "We bring no glittering treasures" (Sunday School Anniversary), was written circa 1848 for a Sunday School Festival in New York city, and published in the Methodist Episcopal Hymns, 1849 (Nutter's Hymn Notes, 1884, p. 31l). --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, Appendix, Part II (1907)

Pastorates in Ontario at Bayfield (1881-1882); Bluevale (1885-1887); Hensall (1888-1890); Ripley (1891-1893); Granton (1894-1896); Walkerville (1896-1898); Wallaceburg (1899-1902); Clinton (1903-1904); Ridgetown (1905-1908); Toronto (1909-1913, 1919-1925); Meaford (1914-1916); and Gravenhurst (1917-1918). He contributed articles and verse to many church-connected magazines.
