Friedrich Conrad Hiller

1662 - 1726 Hymnal Number: d197 Author of "O Jerusalem, du Schoene, da [wo] man Gott best'ndig" in Gebet- und Danklieder, Nr. 2, fuer Erweckungs- und Gebetsversammlung Hiller, Friedrich Conrad, was born at Unteröwisheim, near Bruchsal, in 1662. In 1680 he began the study of law at the University of Tübingen, where he became a licentiate in civil and canon law. He died at Stuttgart, Jan. 23, 1726, where he had been since 1685 advocate in chancery at the ducal court. His hymns, which found favour in Hannover, and have kept their place in Wtirttemberg, appeared in his Denck-mahl der Erkentniss, Liebe und Lob Gottes, in neuen geistlichen Liedern, &c, Stuttgart, 1711, with melodies by J. G. C. Storl. The only one tranlated into English is:— O Jerusalem du schöne. Heaven. 1711, as above, p. 535, in 7 stanzas of 6 lines, entitled Longing after Eternal Life. It has been a great favourite in Württemberg, and was included in the Württemberg Gesang-Buch, 1742, and again in that of 1842. The fine melody set to it in 1711 is found in the Sarum Hymnal, 1868, No. 252. The translations are: (1) "O Jerusalem the golden," by R. Massie, 1864, p. 140, repeated in Reid's Praise Book, 1872. Ludämiliä Elisabeth Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt

1640 - 1672 Person Name: Ludaemilie Elisabeth Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt Hymnal Number: d281 Author of "Wo ist Jesus, mein verlangen" in Gebet- und Danklieder, Nr. 2, fuer Erweckungs- und Gebetsversammlung Ludämilia Elisabeth, second daughter of Count Ludwig Gunther I. of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, was born April 7, 1640, at the castle of Heidecksburg, near Rudolstadt, and was educated there along with her cousin Emilie Juliane (q.v.). In 1665 she went with her mother to the dowager castle of Friedensburg near Leutenberg; but after her mother's death, in 1670, she returned to Rudolstadt, where, on Dec. 20, 1671, she was formally betrothed to Count Christian Wilhelm of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen. At this time measles was raging in the district, and her eldest sister, Sophie Juliane, was seized, and died Feb. 14, 1672. By attending on her, Ludämilia and the youngest sister, Christiane Magdalene, caught the infection, and both died at Rudolstadt on March 12,1672. (Koch, iv. 50-56; Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie xix. 365-367, &c.) She received a careful and pious training, was a good Latin scholar, and well read in divinity and other branches of learning. Her hymns show her to have been of a deeply pious nature, and of intense love to Jesus. They were composed rather for her own edification than for use in public worship. Ten of them were included in the Budolstadt Gesang-Buch, 1682. They, were collected, to the number of 206, and edited by her cousin Emilie (probably assisted by A. Fritsch) as Die Stimme der Freundin, das ist: Geistliche Lieder welche, aus brünstiger und biss ans Ende beharrter Jesus Liebe verfertiget und gebraucht, &c. Rudolstadt, 1687. This was reprinted, with an introduction by W. Thilo, at Stuttgart, 1856. Three of those hymns have been translated viz.:— i. Jesus, Jesus, nichts als Jesus. [Love to Christ] 1687, No. 104, p. 312, in 5 st. of 6 1., entitled “Resignation to the Will of God." The initials of the stanzas form the word Jesus, and each stanza ends, "Herr, wie du willt." It seems to have appeared in the 2nd edition of A. Fritsch's Jesus Lieder (not in the first edition of 1668. No copy of the 2nd edition is now known), and in the 3rd edition, Jena, 1675, is No. 43, Rambach, iii. 188, gives it from the Vermehrtes Gesang-Büchlein, Halberstadt, 1673. In the Berlin Geistliche Lieder, ed. 1863. The translation in common use is :__ Jesus, Jesus, Jesus only. In full, by A. Crull, as No. 282 in the Ohio Lutheran Hymnal, 1880. Other translations are :—(1) "Jesus, Jesus, nought but Jesus, Shall my wish and," in the Supplement to German Psal., ed. 1765, p. 11. (2) "Jesus, 'tis my aim divine," by Miss Dunn, 1857, p. 107. (3) “ 'Tis Jesus that's my sole desire," by Dr. G. Walker, 1860, p. 92. (4) "Jesus, Jesus, naught but Jesus, Can my," by R. Massie, in the British Herald, July, 1865, p. 103, and in Reid's Praise Book, 1872, No. 393. (5) "Jesus, Jesus, nought but Jesus, Shall my wish be," in Cantica Sanctorum, 1880, No. 97. ii. Jesu Blut komm über mich. [Holy Communion.] A Passiontide Hymn on the Blood of Jesus. 1687, p. 45, No. 14, in 8 st. In the Blätter für Hymnologie, 1886, p. 180, it is cited as in the 2nd ed., 1679, of A. Fritsch's Himmels-Lust (1st ed., 1670, does not contain it); and as there marked "S. J. G. Z. S. V. H.," the initials of the elder sister, Sophie Juliane. Translated as:-—"Jesus' Blood come over me," as No. 448, in pt. i. of the Moravian Hymn Book, 1754. iii. Sorge, Vater! sorge du. [Morning.] 1687, No. 168, in 7 st., entitled "On Resignation to the Care of God," and founded on 1 Peter v. 7. Previously in the Rudolstadt Gesang-Buch,1682, p. 692. John Dreisbach

1789 - 1871 Hymnal Number: d152 Author of "Komm Jung, komm Alt, zum Gnadenbrunn" in Gebet- und Danklieder, Nr. 2, fuer Erweckungs- und Gebetsversammlung Dreisbach, John (or Johannes). (Buffalo Valley, Pennsylvania, 1789--1871). Evangelical. Self-educated, proficient in both German and English. Licensed at age 17, was assistant to Albright, the founder of his denomination. Was leader of his denomination from 1808: secretary of Conference, presiding elder 1814, publishing agent 1820. With Henry Niebel compiled Das Geistliche Saitenspiel (1817), with Daniel Bertolet compiled Eine Sammlung Neuer Geistlicher Lieder (1821), which included many of his own hymns. Wrote or translated 31 of the 149 hymns in the extremely popular and persistent Geistlich Viole (1818), which has been described as the most important German-language hymnbook of the pre-Civil War period. Dreisbach's purchase (at a cost equivalent to his eight-year salary) of a printing press in 1815 led to the beginning of the ambitious printing program of his denomination. His best-known original hymns are "Komm Jung, komm Alt, zum Gnadenbrunn," and "Herr Jesu Christ O Gottes Lamm." He is considered one of the three most important early Evangelical hymn writers. Julius Carl Reinhold Sturm

1816 - 1896 Person Name: Julius Sturm Hymnal Number: d37 Author of "In Gottes Haus" in Gebet- und Danklieder, Nr. 2, fuer Erweckungs- und Gebetsversammlung Sturm, Julius Carl Reinhold, was born July 21, 1816, at Köstritz, in the principality of Reuss (younger line). After being a student of theology at Jena, from 1837 to 1841, he was for two years a private tutor at Heilbronn on the Neckar, and then, for a year, at Friesen, in Saxony. In 1845 he became tutor to Prince Heinrich xiv. of Reuss; and after the Prince's confirmation, in 1848, acted as tutor to him for three years more at the Gymnasium in Meiningen. He was then appointed pastor at Göschitz, near Schleiz, in the end of 1850; and pastor at Köstritz, in 1858, where he still (1889) lives as Kirchenrath and Court preacher (Koch, vii. 284; ms. from the author, &c). Sturm is one of the most important of modern German sacred poets. Among his works of this nature may be mentioned:— (1) Gedichte, Leipzig, 1850; 3rd ed., 1862. (2) Fromme Lieder, Leipzig, 1852; 6th ed., 1867. (3) Zwei Rosen, oder das holte Lied der Liebe, Leipzig, 1854: a version of Canticles. (4) Neue fromme Lieder und Gedichte, Leipzig, 1858; 2nd ed., 1870. (5) Israel's Weg zur Herrlichkeit, Erlangen, 1858; 2nd ed., as Israelitische Lieder, Halle, 1867. (6) Von der Pilgerfahrt, Halle, 1868. (7) Gott grüsse dich. Religiöse Gedichte, Leipzig, 1876. (8) Aufwärtz, Leipzig, 1881. (9) Ich bau auf Gott. Neue religiöse Gedichte, Bremen, 1883. (10) Palme und Krone, Bremen, 1888. From these works a large number of pieces have passed into recent collections of German sacred poetry, and a few into recent German official hymnbooks. A considerable number have been translation by Lady John Manners, the Rev. J. Kelly, and others, but none have passed into English hymnbooks. [Rev. Johannes Walter

1781 - 1818 Hymnal Number: d155 Author of "Kommt, Brueder, [Schwestern] kommt, wir eilen fort" in Gebet- und Danklieder, Nr. 2, fuer Erweckungs- und Gebetsversammlung Walter, Johannes. (Berks Co., Pennsylvania, August 21, 1781--December 3, 1818). Evangelical. Was early assistant to Albright, founder of denomination, first as tile-make, later as companion on preaching trips. Editor of the first Evanglical hymnbook, Eine kleine Sammlung Alter und Neuer Geistricher Lider (1810), containing 56 hymns of which he wrote several. The most famous of his hymns, "Kommt brüder, kommt, wir eilen fort" was recited to a companion while traveling a winter circuit, hurriedly written out on arrival, and published as a broadside. It and another of his hymns, "Wer will mit uns nach Zion gehn?" were the two most popular German hymns written in America. They are found in the most popular of the Evangelical hymnbooks, the "Viole," and were sung by German Methodists in the Midwest and in Germany and Switzerland.
