When We Seek Language

Author: Carl P. Daw, Jr., 1944- Hymnal: CoCS2013 #61 (2013) Meter: 10.10.10.10 with refrain First Line: When we seek language to praise you, O God Refrain First Line: Infinite Intimate, unbounded Friend Lyrics: 1 When we seek language to praise you, O God, all we can utter seems stale, tame, or odd. Tongue-tied and word-lost, we struggle to find phrases that slight neither heart, soul, nor mind: Refrain: Infinite Intimate, unbounded Friend, cosmic Companion who loves without end, nearer than heartbeat, more subtle than breath, keener than insight, and stronger than death. 2 Steadfastly loving, you gave us your Word, living among us on earth, seen and heard, teacher and healer whose promise came true, dying and rising to make all things new. [Refrain] 3 To be our guardian, supporter, and guide, you sent your Spirit to stay by our side, source of community, wellspring of prayer, power to strengthen, and courage to dare. [Refrain] Topics: God Mystery of; God Names of; God's Love; Holy Spirit; Jesus Christ's Life; New Life in Christ; Praise; Trinity Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:16-17 Languages: English Tune Title: PERICHORESIS

Afar in Old Judea

Author: Roy A. Cheville, 1897-1986 Hymnal: CoCS2013 #63 (2013) Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Lyrics: 1 Afar in old Judea, above the Jordan stream, a heav'nly light descended on a baptismal scene. Then came the confirmation of Jesus, from above, the sacramental signet; the Spirit as a dove. 2 In ancient Zarahemla, above the temple towers, appeared the Christ of Judah to crown the watchful hours. A voice, serene yet piercing beyond our words to tell, proclaimed him as the Savior whom prophets did foretell. 3 Then in a time of searching, a youth who sought God's way saw in Palmyra's woodland a light beyond his day, and when the vision opened to him whose sight was dim, he heard the Father saying, "This is my Son, hear him!" 4 Today the heav'ns are open to souls prepared to hear the wondrous revelation of Christ, who's ever near. The Savior of the ages still lives with us today; he seeks to help us know him and leads us in his way. Topics: Baptism; Confirmation; Continuing Revelation; God Father; Restoration Heritage; Jesus Christ The Way; Jesus Christ's Baptism; Jesus Christ's Divinity; Scripture; Seeking Scripture: Matthew 3:16-17 Languages: English Tune Title: EWING

Deep in the Shadows of the Past

Author: Brian Wren, 1936- Hymnal: CoCS2013 #64 (2013) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Lyrics: 1 Deep in the shadows of the past, far out from settled lands, some nomads traveled with their God across the desert sands. The dawning hope of humankind by them was sensed and shown: a promise calling them ahead, a future yet unknown. 2 While others bowed to changeless gods they met a mystery, invisible, without a name: "I AM WHAT I WILL BE"; and by their tents, around their fires in story, song, and law, they praised, remembered, handed on a past that promised more. 3 From Exodus to Pentecost the promise changed and grew, while some, remembering the past, recorded what they knew, or with their letters and laments, their prophecy and praise, recovered, kindled, and expressed new hope for changing days. 4 For all the writings that survived, for leaders long ago who sifted, copied, and preserved the Bible that we know, give thanks, and find its story yet our promise, strength, and call, the model of emerging faith, alive with hope for all. Topics: Call/Calling; Change; Continuing Revelation; God Mystery of; God's Faithfulness; Hope; Scripture Scripture: 1 Timothy 4:13 Languages: English Tune Title: SHEPHERDS' PIPES

We Limit Not the Truth of God

Author: George Rawson, 1807-1889; Rosemary Fishburn, 1928-2002; F. Augé-Daullé, 1875-1972 Hymnal: CoCS2013 #69 (2013) Lyrics: English - 1 We limit not the truth of God to our poor reach of mind by notions of our day and sect, crude, partial, and confined. No, let a new and better hope within our hearts be stirred– the Lord hath yet more light and truth to break forth from his word. 2 Who dares to bind to their dull sense the oracles of heav'n for all the nations, tongues, and climes, and all the ages given? That universe, how much unknown! that ocean unexplored! The Lord hath yet more light and truth to break forth from his word. 3 O Father, Son, and Spirit, send us increase from above; enlarge, expand all Christian souls to comprehend thy love; and make us all go on to know, with nobler pow'rs conferred, he Lord hath yet more light and truth to break forth from his word. Ayúdanos a entender tu amor y compasión. Ayúdanos a entender tu plan, tu voluntad. God Is Here!

Author: Fred Pratt Green, 1903-2000 Hymnal: CoCS2013 #70 (2013) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D First Line: God is here! As we your people Lyrics: 1 God is here! As we your people meet to offer praise and prayer, may we find in fuller measure what it is in Christ we share. Here, as in the world around us, all our varied skills and arts wait the coming of the Spirit into open minds and hearts. 2 Here are symbols to remind us of our lifelong need of grace; Here are table, font, and pulpit; here the cross has central place. Here in honesty of preaching, here, in silence, as in speech, here, in newness and renewal, God the Spirit comes to each. 3 Here our children find a welcome in the Shepherd's flock and fold; here as bread and wine are taken, Christ sustains us as of old. Here the servants of the Servant seek in worship to explore what it means in daily living to believe and to adore. 4 Lord of all, of church and kingdom, in an age of change and doubt, keep us faithful to the gospel; help us work your purpose out. Here, in this day's dedication, all we have to give, receive; we, who cannot live without you, we adore you! We believe! Topics: Baptism; Challenge; Children; Church; Commitment; Communion; Community; Creativity; Cross; Discipleship; Gathering; God's Presence; Grace; Holy Spirit; Praise; Proclamation; Servanthood Scripture: Psalm 145:18-21 Languages: English Tune Title: ABBOT'S LEIGH
