Jacques Berthier

1923 - 1994 Person Name: Jacques Berthier (1923-1994) Scripture: Luke 11:2-4 Composer of "[Pater noster]" in Wonder, Love, and Praise Jacques Berthier (b. Auxerre, Burgundy, June 27, 1923; d. June 27, 1994) A son of musical parents, Berthier studied music at the Ecole Cesar Franck in Paris. From 1961 until his death he served as organist at St. Ignace Church, Paris. Although his published works include numerous compositions for organ, voice, and instruments, Berthier is best known as the composer of service music for the Taizé community near Cluny, Burgundy. Influenced by the French liturgist and church musician Joseph Gelineau, Berthier began writing songs for equal voices in 1955 for the services of the then nascent community of twenty brothers at Taizé. As the Taizé community grew, Berthier continued to compose most of the mini-hymns, canons, and various associated instrumental arrangements, which are now universally known as the Taizé repertoire. In the past two decades this repertoire has become widely used in North American church music in both Roman Catholic and Protestant traditions. Bert Polman

Emily R. Brink

Brink is a Senior Research Fellow of the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship and Adjunct Professor of Church Music and Worship at Calvin Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan. Her main areas of responsibility are conference planning and global resources. She is program manager of the annual Calvin Symposium on Worship, which draws more than 70 presenters and 1600 participants from around the world. She also travels widely to lecture and to learn about worship in different parts of the world, especially in Asia, where she has lectured in Bangladesh, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, and Taiwan. Her areas of interest include congregational song from all times and places; psalmody; hymnal editing. She was editor of four hymnals and consults with a wide range of churches on worship renewal issues. Dr. Brink is active in the American Guild of Organists, serving in both local and national offices, as well as in the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada (president from 1990 1992) and named a Fellow of the Hymn Society in 2004 in recognition of distinguished services to hymnody and hymnology. --internal.calvinseminary.edu/

His life’s work includes two sons (Simon and Theo), two books (The Art of Worship, 2006, and Essential Worship, 2016), and hundreds of compositions, songs, and arrangements in a dizzying variety of styles. Anne Zaki

Scripture: Luke 11:2-4 Translator and Adapter of "Abana Alathi Fi Ssama (Abana in Heaven)" in Global Songs for Worship Anne Zaki was born in Cairo, Egypt, where her father was a pastor. At age 16 she was selected by the Egyptian government to represent her homeland in an international school in Western Canada, dedicated to peace and international understanding. After graduation she attended Calvin College, where she learned to integrate her faith and her dedication to social justice. Following her graduation with a BA in psychology and sociology in 1999, Zaki married Naji Umran, a Canadian-Syrian student at Calvin Theological Seminary, and they had four boys: Jonathan, Sebastian, Emmanuel, and Alexander. Zaki also earned two master's degrees, one in social psychology from the American University in Cairo in 2002, and one in divinity from Calvin Theological Seminary in 2009. She is currently pursuing a PhD in preaching at Fuller Theological Seminary. She worked as a research and development specialist for global worship for the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship from 2003 – 2013, developing global worship resources and organizing global worship conferences worldwide. Ever since, she's been cultivating a global perspective on life and faith by speaking at mission gatherings like Missio Nexus, the Global Consultation on Music and Missions (GCoMM), the Lausanne Movement's Younger Leaders Gathering (YLG), and Urbana 18. After pastoring churches in Michigan and British Columbia, the couple fulfilled their dream of returning to Egypt to live and serve in September 2011, nine months after the Arab Spring. Anne currently teaches at the Evangelical Presbyterian Seminary in Cairo, Egypt, courses on Preaching, Worship, Spiritual Formation, Psychology, and Communication. Anne Zaki

Herman G. Stuempfle

Stuempfle, Jr., 83, died Tuesday, March 13, 2007, after a long illness. Born April 2, 1923, in Clarion, he was the son of the late Herman G. and Helen (Wolfe) Stuempfle, Sr. Stuempfle lived most of his life in Gettysburg, PA. He served as President of the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg. He attended Hughesville public schools, and was a graduate of Susquehanna University and the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg. He received additional advanced degrees from Union Theological Seminary in New York and a doctoral degree at Southern California School of Theology at Claremont. He retired in 1989. Rev. Dr. Stuempfle was the author of several books and numerous articles and lectures on preaching, history, and theology. He was also among the most honored and respected hymn writers of the 20th and 21st centuries. Rev. Dr. Stuempfle was known for his leadership in community and civic projects. Always taking an active stance on social issues, he participated in the creation of day care centers, served on the Gettysburg interchurch social action committee, helped create and support prison ministries and a homeless shelter, and tutored young people in the after school program of Christ Lutheran Church, where he was a long time member. --Excerpts from his obituary published in Evening Sun from Mar. 15 to Mar. 16, 2007
