David W. Romig

1926 - 2002 Hymnal Number: 86 Author of "When We Are Tempted to Deny Your Son" in The Presbyterian Hymnal David W. Romig was born in 1926 in New York City and educated at Princeton University (B.A. in History and Humanities, 1948). He graduated from Union Theological Seminary in New York City in 1955. Romig served the Riverdale Presbyterian Church in the Lower East Side of New York City until 1958, when he was called to the Lower East Side to begin a ministry at The Sea & Land Presbyterian Church in Henry Street In 1968 he became pastor of the Brick Presbyterian Church in Rochester, New York where he was instrumental in merging First (St. Luke's) and Central churches to become the Downtown Presbyterian Church which met in the original Brick Church building on Fitzhugh Street. He honorably retired from the Downtown Presbyterian Church. Romig served as chair of the Joint Committee on Worship, which prepared The Worshipbook (1970, 1972) from 1962 to 1967. He has written the libretto for the musicals Joseph the Carpenter and Cricket on the Hearth. He continued to write poetry for modern organ music. Romig died in 2002. Diana R. 1900 - 1995 Hymnal Number: 465 Author of "Here, O Lord, Your Servants Gather" in The Presbyterian Hymnal Tokuo Yamaguchi (b. Tomie-cho, Fukue Island, Nagasaki-Pref., Japan, 1900; d. Aichi-Pref., Japan, 1995) was a Methodist pastor in Sawara, Tanimura, Fujieda, and Asahikawa, following his graduation with a theology degree from Aoyama Gakuin University in 1924. His longest term of service was as pastor of the United Church of Christ in Toyohashi in the Aichi Prefecture (1937-1979). He translated The Journal of John Wesley into Japanese in 1961 and was honored by the Christian Literature Society of Japan in 1983 for his translation work. Psalter Hymnal Handbook, 1987

Died: 1955, Mex­i­co Ci­ty, Mex­i­co. Mendoza stu­died in­i­tial­ly un­der Don Au­re­lio Or­te­ga. At age of 11 he went to work in a Pro­test­ant print shop in Mex­i­co Ci­ty and helped pro­duce El Evan­gel­is­ta Mex­i­ca­no (The Mex­i­can Evan­gel­ist) for the Meth­od­ist Church of the South; he rose to be­come its di­rect­or for 17 years. Look­ing to im­prove him­self, Men­do­za en­tered a night school for work­ers, but lat­er feel­ing the call to preach the Gos­pel, he en­tered the Pres­by­ter­i­an Sem­in­a­ry in Mex­i­co Ci­ty. When the sem­in­a­ry closed temp­o­rar­i­ly, Men­do­za en­tered the Meth­od­ist In­sti­tute of Pueb­la, where he fin­ished the course in the­ol­o­gy. In 1898 he be­came a mem­ber of the An­nu­al Con­fer­ence of the Mex­i­can Meth­od­ist Church. From 1915 to 1917, he be­longed to the South­ern Meth­od­ist Con­fer­ence of Cal­i­for­nia. Men­do­za worked on sev­er­al per­i­od­i­cals, in­clud­ing El Mun­do Crist­i­a­no (The Chris­tian World), El Abo­ga­do Crist­i­a­no (The Chris­tian Ad­vo­cate), and El Evan­gel­is­ta Crist­i­a­no (The Chris­tian Evan­gel­ist). © The Cyber Hymnal™ (hymntime.com/tch)
