O sacred head, surrounded

Author: Paul Gerhardt, 1607-1676; Henry Williams Baker, 1821-1877 Hymnal: Complete Anglican Hymns Old and New #535 (2000) Meter: 7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6 Scripture: Matthew 27:29 Lyrics: 1 O sacred head, surrounded by crown of piercing thorn! O bleeding head, so wounded, so shamed and put to scorn! Death's pallid hue comes o'er thee, the glow oflife decays; yet angel-hosts adore thee, and tremble as they gaze. 2 Thy comeliness and vigour is withered up and gone, and in thy wasted figure I see death drawing on. O agony and dying! O love to sinners free! Jesu, all grace supplying, turn thou thy face on me. 3 In this thy bitter passion, good Shepherd, think of me with thy most sweet compassion, unworthy though I be: beneath thy cross abiding for ever would I rest, in thy dear love confiding, and with thy presence blest. Two Thousand Years Since Bethlehem

Author: Brian Hoare, 1935- Hymnal: Worship and Rejoice #540 (2003) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Scripture: Matthew 27:33-44 Lyrics: 1 Two thousand years since Bethlehem first welcomed Jesus' birth: the startling truth began to dawn that God had come to earth. And as he grew and lived and taught a different way unfurled: a way of joy and love and peace, a new start for the world! 2 Two thousand years since Galilee where Jesus preached and healed; in words of truth and works of power God's kingdom was revealed. As young and old and rich and poor responded to his call, they found what we may find today: a new start for us all! 3 Two thousand years since Calvary, the hill where Jesus died; the Lamb of God, the sinless one, for me was crucified. But soon he rose up from the grave to reign in victory; good news I scarcely can believe; a new start won for me! 4 Two thousand years since Pentecost: the Holy Spirit came in sound of mighty, rushing wind and tongues of living flame; a gift to all who will believe and live the Jesus way; the power of God we may receive, a new start from today! 5 Two thousand years of Christian faith have changed our history, for Jesus is the Lord of time and of eternity. For all who seek a better way, than failure, sin and pain, still Jesus Christ makes all things new: a chance to start again! Languages: English Tune Title: FOREST GREEN

When Jesus came to Golgotha

Author: Geoffrey Anketel Studdert-Kennedy (1883-1929) Hymnal: Wonder, Love, and Praise #736 (1997) Meter: 14.14.14.14 Scripture: Matthew 27:27-45 First Line: When Jesus came to Golgotha they hanged him on a tree Lyrics: 1 When Jesus came to Golgotha they hanged him on a tree, they drove great nails through hands and feet, and made a Calvary; they crowned him with a crown of thorns, red were his wounds and deep, for those were crude and cruel days, and human flesh was cheap. 2 When Jesus came to live with us we simply passed him by, we never hurt a hair of him, we only let him die; for we had grown more tender, and we would not give him pain, we only just passed down the street and left him in the rain. 3 Still Jesus cries, "Forgive them for they know not what they do," and still it rains the winter rain that drenches through and through; the crowds go home and leave the streets without a soul to see, and Jesus crouches 'gainst a wall and cries for Calvary. As newborn stars were stirred to song

Author: Carl P. Daw Jr. (b. 1944) Hymnal: Wonder, Love, and Praise #788 (1997) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Scripture: Matthew 27:45 Lyrics: 1 As newborn stars were stirred to song when all things came to be, as Miriam and Moses sang when Israel was set free, so music bursts unbidden forth when God-filled hearts rejoice, to waken awe and gratitude and give mute faith a voice. 2 In psalms that raise the singer’s sense to universal truths, in prophet’s dark-toned oracle or hymn of three brave youths: the song of faith and praise endured through those God called to be a chosen people bearing light for all the world to see. 3 When God’s redeeming Word took flesh to make salvation sure, unheeding hearts attuned to strife refused love’s overture. Yet to the end the song went on: a supper’s parting hymn, a psalm intoned on dying lips when sun and hope grew dim. 4 But silence won no vict’ry there; a rest was all it scored before glad alleluias rose to greet the risen Lord. The church still keeps that song alive, for death has lost its sting, and with the gift of life renewed the heart will ever sing.
