I am into my garden come

Hymnal: PHSS1758 #SSV (1758) Lyrics: Christ: 1 I am into my garden come, my sister, and my spouse: I gather'd have my myrrh and spice for our delightful use: My honey-comb with honey eat, my wine and milk drank I; Eat O ye friends, drink O belov'd, yea drink abundantly. The Church; 2 I sleep; but yet my heart awakes: the voice 'tis of my Love, Who knocks and kindly calls to me, with all my bowels move; Christ: 'Open to Me, my sister, Love, 'my dove, my undefil'd; 'My heard with dew, my locks with drops 'the night distills, is fill'd! The Church: 3 My coat I have put off; how shall I put it on again? And I my feet have washed clean; how shall I them distain? 4 But when I my Beloved's hand upon the latch discern'd; Griev'd that I should so long delay, my bowels stronger yearn'd. 5 I rose to open to my Love: my hands myrrh dropped down; And on the handles of the lock myrrh from my fingers run. 6 But when the door I open'd wide to my Beloved one; My Love had then withdrawn Himself, and out of sight was gone! When as He spake, my soul did fail; and now I sought Him have, But found Him not; I call'd to Him, yet He no answer gave! 7 The city watchmen met me then, they smote and wounded me, The keepers of the wall ev'n took from me my veil away. 8 O daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you, to Him say, If my Belov'd ye find, that I for love shall faint away. Daughters of Jerusalem: 9 O fairest thou of all the fair! what's thy Beloved, show: What more than others is thy Love, that thou dost charge us so? The Church: 10 My Love is white and ruddy, chief above ten thousands fair: 11 His head is finest gold; his locks curl'd black as ravens are! 12 His eyes are like the eyes of doves looking on water-streams; As if they washed were with milk, and fitly set as gems! 13 His cheeks like garden-beds of spice, with flowers of spice crown'd: His lips like lillies, dropping myrrh, diffusing odours round! 14 His hands adorn'd with rings of gold, with precious stones inlaid: His bowels like bright ivory, with sapphires overspread! 15 His legs like marble pillars stand on golden sockets plac'd; His countenance like Lebanon, with stately cedars grac'd. 16 His mouth is all of sweetness made! He's perfect loveliness! O daughters of Jerusalem! my Love and Friend is this? Scripture: Song of Solomon 5 Languages: English

I am the man who by his rod

Hymnal: PHSS1758 #LIII (1758) Lyrics: 1 I am the man who by his rod Of wrath see dismal scenes of woes; 2 He hath me into darkness brought, And not a gleam of light He shows. 3 He surely is against me turn'd: His hand all day He turns on me. 4 My flesh and skin He old hat made My bones to pieces broke hath He. 5 He built around me: and with gall And travel me encompassed: 6 He hath me set in places dark, As those who long ago were dead. 7 So hedg'd me in, I can't get out; Makes me his heavy chain to bear; 8 And when I earnest cry aloud, He grievously shuts out my pray'r. 9 He with hewn stones enclos'd my path, And intricate hath made my ways: 10 He as a bear lays wait for me, A lion in a hidden place. 11 He turned hath my ways aside; He hath to pieces pulled me: Of all my comforts hath bereav'd And made me desolate to be. 12 He bent his bow; and me a mark Did for his sharp'ned arrows place; 13 The arrows of his quiver caus'd Into my tender reins to pass. 14 To all my people I'm a scoff, And all the day their jeering song; 15 He made me full of bitterness, And even drunk with wormwood strong. 16 Yea He my teeth with gravel break, And all in ashes rolled me. 17 Thou putst my soul far off from peace, And I forgot prosperity. 18 Yea I did say, my strength and hope Are wholly perish'd from the LORD. 19 My grief and pain, wormwood and gall, I in my troubled mind record. 20 My soul doth still remember them, And in me low abas'd, doth lie: 21 Yet to my mindIi this recall, And thence a glimpse of hope have I; 22 It's of the mercies of the LORD, We are not quite consum'd away; Because the pity of his heart Nor does, nor ever will decay. 23 They ev'ry morning are renew'd: Thy changeless faithfulness is great, 24 The LORD's my portions, saith my soul; And thence my hope I'll on Him set. 25 To them who wait for Him, the soul Who seeks Him, gracious is the LORD; 26 'Tis best in quietness to wait Till He salvation will afford. 27 Good for a man it is in youth that he should bear the humbling yoke; 28 He sits alone, and silence keeps Becausee he bears thy holy stroke. 29 He puts his mouth into the dust, If so there any hope may be: 30 His cheek to him who smites he gives, Tho' filled with reproach is he. 31 Ever the Lord will not cast off; but tho' He causes pungent grief; 32 Yet in his mercies great He will Compassion have, and give relief. 33 For He's not willing to afflict Or grieve the sons of men 'tis known; 34 To crush the pris'ners of the earth, Or under feet to tread them down. 35 To turn aside the right of man Before the face of THE MOST HIGH; 36 Or to subvert his righteous case; The Lord abhors eternally. 37 Who's he that saith, and them performs, Unless it be the Lord's good will. 38 Out of the mouth of THE MOST HIGH, Proceed all good and penal ill. 29 Why for the punishment of sins Doth any living man complain? 40 O let us search and try our ways, And to the LORD now turn again. 41 O let us lift our hearts and hands. Up to the mighty God in heav'n; 42 We all have trespass'd and rebell'd, Nor hast Thou yet our sins forgiv'n. 43 Thy wrath us covers and pursues; Thou slay'st, and dost not pity show. 44 Thou so with clouds dost hide thy self, That our loud cries cannot pass thro'. 45 Amidst the people hast us made Th' offscouring, refuse, and jeer. 46 And the wide mouths of all our foes, Against and round us op'ned are. 47 Fear and a snare are come on us; And all in desolation lies: 48 For daughters of my people's waste Rivers of tears run down mine eyes. 49 Mine eyes with tears flow down apace; And will no intermissions know, 50 Until the LORD from heav'n look down, And see us in our dismal woe. 51 Mine eye affects my soul with grief, To see my city's daughters cause; 52 My foes pursue me unprovok'd The harmless birds as fowlers chase. 53 My life they in the dungeon sunk, And on me haevy stones they cast. 54 The waters flowing o'er my head, I said, "I'm gone, all hope is past!" 55 O LORD, I call'd upon thy name, In the deep dungeon, like to die; 56 Thou heardst my voice, hide not thine ear, From my short panting and my cry 57 Then Thou draw'st near, and saidst, "FEAR NOT!" Ev'n in the day I call'd on Thee: 48 Lord, my soul's causes Thou didst plead, And my expiring life set free. 59 JEHOVAH judge the cause for me, As Thou my wrongs has always seen. 60 As their revenge and all their plots Before thine eyes have ever been. 61 All their reproach, Thou LORD, hast heard; Thou seest the snares they for me lay, 62 Their lips who up against me rise, And all their plotings all the day. 63 See, when they sit, and when they rise, The musick of their songs am I: 64 But LORD, as are their handy works A just reward Thou wilt apply. 65 Sorrow of heart Thou wilt them give, Thy grievous curse wilt make them bear; 66 In wrath them chace, and from beneath JEHOVAH's heav'ns waste ev'ry where. A Song of Degrees

Hymnal: PHSS1758 #PCXX (1758) First Line: I in distress cried to the Lord Lyrics: 1 I In distress cry'd to the LORD; and kind, He heard my cries. 2 LORD, save my soul from guileful tongues, and lips inur'd to lies. 3 What shall to thy false tongue be done? or giv'n, thou slanderer? 4 Sharp arrows of the Mighty one, and coals of Juniper. 5 Ah! wo is me, that I am forc'd in Meshech to reside ; And must in the ungodly tents of Kedar still abide! 6 My soul has long been forc'd to dwell with them who peace abhor: 7 I am for peace; but when I speak, they all declare for war.

I in JEHOVAH place my trust

Hymnal: PHSS1758 #PXI (1758) Lyrics: 1 I in JEHOVAH place my trust: why therefore say do ye To my poor soul, "like frighted birds "to your high mountain flee." 2 For lo, the wicked bend their bows, and on the string prepare, Their arrows in the dark to shoot at those who upright are. 3 But if the great foundations of our state they overthrow; [Which are thy sacred laws and truths;] what shall the righteous do? 4 JEHOVAH's in his holy place, and in the heav'ns on high JEHOVAH's throne: his eyes observe, men's sons his eye-lids try. 5 The men who truly righteous are JEHOVAH does approve: His soul the wicked hates, and them who violence do love. 6 Snares, fire and brimstone, dreadful storms, on sinners He will rain: This is the portion of the cup He does for them ordain. 7 Because the LORD, who righteous is, all right'ousness does love; His countenance the upright one, beholding does approve. I love, because Jehovah doth

Hymnal: PHSS1758 #PCXVI (1758) Lyrics: 1 I love, because JEHOVAH doth My voice and pray'r still hear; 2 And in my days will call on Him, who bow'd to me his ear. 3 The cords of death on ev'ry side begirt me fast around: The pains of hell laid hold on me: grief and distress I found. 4 Then on JEHOVAH's name I call'd, and earnestly did cry, 'O LORD! deliver Thou my soul 'in my extremity.' 5 JEHOVAH just and gracious is; our God most kind also. 6 The LORD the simple keeps, and He me sav'd when I was low. 7 O now my soul, do thou return to thy delightful rest, Because the LORD hath bounteously Himself to the express'd. 8 Because Thou hast my soul from death now set at liberty: Mine eyes from tears, my sliding feet from falling hath set free. 9 Therefore I'll walk before the LORD, in his appointed ways, While in the land of living ones He lengthens out my days. [2 Part] 10 I did believe, and therefore spake, I great affliction bear; 11 Then in distress and haste I said, that all men liars are. 12 But O JEHOVAH! what returns shall I now make to Thee; For all the many benefits, Thou hast bestow'd on me. 13 I'll take the cup of saving health, and on the LORD's name call. 14 I'll pay the LORD my vows, yea now, before his people all. 15 In presence of JEHOVAH is esteem'd exceeding dear The death of ev'ry one of those his gracious saints who are. 16 I verily thy servant am, thy servant LORD, am I, I of thy handmaid am the son, My bands Thou didst untie. 17 The sacrifice of thankfulness, I'll offer up to Thee; And I upon JEHOVAH's name, will call continually. 18 The vows which in distress I made I to the LORD will pay, In presence of his people all without the least delay. 19 Within Jehovah;s courts therefore I gladly pay my vow, In midst of thee Jerusalem! sing HALLELUJAH, now! A Psalm of David

Hymnal: PHSS1758 #PXXXIX (1758) First Line: I said, I to my ways will look Lyrics: 1 I Said, I to my ways will look, lest I sin with my tongue; With curb I'll keep my mouth while I the wicked am among 2 With silence I as dumb abode, my mouth did I refrain From speaking good; but then the more excited was my pain. 3 My heart within me waxed hot, while I was musing long, Until the fire enkindled was, then spake I with my tongue. 4 O LORD, teach me to know my end, and measure of my days; How short it is, how frail I am, how swift my time decays. 5 Lo, Thou my days hast made a span, mine age is nought to Thee: At his best state sure ev'ry man Us wholly vanity. (Selah.) 6 Sure man walks in an empty show, and stirs himself in vain; Who heaps up wealth, but knows not who shall gather all his gain. [2 Part] 7 And now, O Lord, what wait I for? my hope is set on Thee: 8 Free me from all my trespasses; the fool’s scoff make not me. 9 I silent was, and shut my mouth, this done because Thou hast: 10 Remove thy stroke away from me' by thy hands blow I waste. 11 When with rebukes Thou chastnest man for his iniquity, His beauty, like a moth consumes; sure each man’s vanity. (Selah.) 12 LORD hear my pray'r, regard my tears, give ear to my loud cry: For as my fathers all, with Thee, a sojourner am I. 13 O spare me for a little space, and strength to me restore, Before, by death, from hence I go, and shall be here no more. I Sharon's rose and lilly am

Hymnal: PHSS1758 #SSII (1758) Lyrics: Christ: 1 I Sharon's rose and lilly am which in the valley grows; 2 As lillies among thorns, my Love among the daughters shows. The Church: 3 As th' apple-tree among the woods, which fruit most beauteous bears; So my most dear beloved one among the sons appears: I with great joy sat in his shade; his fruit most sweet did prove: 4 He brought me to his banquet-house his banner o'er me love. 5 With flaggons stay, with apples cheer, for faint with love am I. 6 Under my head his left hand doth, his right above me lie. 7 O daughters of Jerusalem wake not my Love, nor raise; By roes and hinds of all the fields I charge you till He please. 8 O tis the voice of my Belov'd! upon the mountain's z He, As roes or fawns bound o'er the hills, so leaping comes, I see! 9 But now behind our wall He stands, and thro' the window views? I see Him thro' the latices; how lovelily He shews! 10 The my Beloved call'd to me, to me did kindly say; Christ: 'Arise my Love, my fairest one, 'make haste and come away! 11 'For lo the winter now is past, ' the rain entirely gone; 12 'The flow'rs appear all o'er the earth 'the singing birds come on! 'The turtle's soft and melting voice 'thro' all the land I hear: 13 'The fig-tree, see, puts forth her figs; 'the young and green appear! 'The vines with their young tender grapes 'around perfume the air: 'Arise my Love, my fairest one; 'come, stay no longer there!' 14 O Thou my dove, in clefts of rocks, in secret stairs! let me Hear thy sweet voice! thy comely face O let me gladly see! The Church: 15 The foxes take for us away, the little foxes# there, Who spoil the vines; and then the vines their tender grapes will bear. 16 My most Beloved one is mine, and I am wholly his; Among the lillies of the vales His pleasant feeding is. 17 Till the day break, and shades fly hence, turn my Belov'd to me; And like a roe or fawn upon the Bether mountains be! I to Jehovah with my voice

Hymnal: PHSS1758 #PCXLII (1758) Lyrics: 1 I to JEHOVAH with my voice express'd aloud my cry; In supplications to the LORD, I rais'd my voice on high. 2 Before his face I poured out my sorrowful complaint; Before his presence I declar'd the grief I underwent. 3 In me my spirit was o'erwhelm'd; my path was known to Thee: And in the way I was to go they hid a snare for me. 4 On my right hand I look'd and view'd, but none would know me there; All human refuge failed me; none for my soul would care. 5 Then to the LORD I cry'd, and said; Thou shalt my refuge be, And in the land of living ones, my portion is in Thee. 6 Because I'm brought exceeding low, O listen to my cry; Me from my persecutors save, who stronger are than I. 7 From out of prison bring my soul, to sing loud praise to Thee; The just will circle me with joy, when Thou shalt favour me. The Song of Jonah upon his great Deliverance

Hymnal: PHSS1758 #JII (1758) First Line: I to the Lord in my distress Lyrics: 2 I to the LORD in my distress Cry'd earnestly, and He gave ear; Out from hell's belly then I cry'd, And He my voice did kindly hear. 3 For down into the hideous deeps, And midst of seas, Thou didst me cast; The floods encompass'd me, and all thy waves and billows o'er me pass'd. 4 I then said, I was cast away Quite from the sight of thy blest eyes, Yet tow'rds thy temple i will look, And to Thee there direct my cries. 5 The waters to my sinking soul Pierc'd and encompaas'd me around; That depths all round enclosed me, The weeds about my head were bound. 6 To mountains bottoms I went down, Earth's bars for ever me beset; Yet LORD my God, Thou hast my life Brought up out of the horrid pit. 7 When my sunk soul fainted in me, JEHOVAH then remember'd I; And then my pray'r rose up to Thee, Into thy holy place on high. 8 they their own mercies sadly leave, who look to lying vanities; But with the voice of giving thanks, To Thee I'll praises sacrifice. 9 Whatever I in trouble vow;d, To pay I readily accord; For all salvation ever comes From the most kind and sov'reign LORD.
