b. 1943 Hymnal Number: 43 Translator and Adapter of "Pelas dores deste mundo (For the Troubles)" in Global Songs for Worship Simei Monteiro is a Brazilian poet, composer, translator, author and editor. She was Born in Belém, PA, Brazil in 1943. Her songs and translations appear in several hymn books and collections of sacred songs in Brazil, Latin America, USA, Europe, and Asia. She has a degree in Portuguese, French Language and Literature, and a Degree in Artistic Education. She is interested in worship and the arts, and her book: The Song of Life, explores the relationship between Hymnody and Theology. Until 2010, she was a missionary of The United Methodist Church, serving with the World Council of Churches (WCC), in Geneva, Switzerland, in the position of Worship Consultant. Marion Pope

b. 1928 Hymnal Number: 50 Paraphraser of "Nagunee Yangshik (Food for Pilgrim People)" in Global Songs for Worship Marion Pope was a Canadian United Church missionary who spent many years in Korea. She was highly influenced by the missiologist Katharine Hockin, also a United Church missionary who was one of the last western missionaries to leave China after the founding of the People's Republic. Marion was deeply dedicated to expressing the gospel in the cultural context in which it was immersed. Tom Colvin

1925 - 2000 Hymnal Number: 2 Author of "Humbly in Your Sight" in Global Songs for Worship Tom Colvin (b. 1925; d. 2000) was trained as an engineer and worked in that profession in Burma and Singapore from 1945 to 1948. After studying theology at Trinity College, Glasgow University, he was ordained in the Church of Scotland in 1954. He served as missionary in Nyasaland (now Malawi) from 1954 to 1958, in Ghana from 1958 to 1964, and again in Nyasaland from 1964 to 1974. His work there included preaching, education, and community development. After completing his missionary work, Colvin became a minister in the United Reformed Church of England and served an inner-city church in London. He returned to Africa in 1984 as a development consultant to the Zimbabwe Christian Council. Colvin's writings include Christ's Work in Free Africa (1964) and three collections of hymns, many written in collaboration with African Christians–Free to Serve (1966), Leap My Soul (1976), and Fill Us with Your Love (1983). Ewald Bash

1924 - 1994 Person Name: Edward Bash Hymnal Number: 41 Author of "By the Babylonian Rivers" in Global Songs for Worship Ewald J. Bash (Indiana, 1924-- ). A poet and also an occasional writer of folk melodies, his personal interests arose in the era of return to genuine folk music of the early Sixties and continued into the Seventies during the time of turmoil and crisis. His lyrics, set to a Latvian folk song, "Hymn for Those in Captivity," appears in Cantate Domine. He also composed hymns which have appeared in the hymnals of a number of communions. He was part of a folk liturgical movement in the Lutheran Church and contributed much to a development of such moods in an early work, Songs for Today. Certain of his work has also appeared in Jerusalem/Babylon: Handbook for a Christian in the Urban World. --Ewald J. Bash, DNAH Archives In a letter from Bash to Mary Louise VanDyke dated 12 January 1987, he states: "'Hymn for Those in Captivity' was written in the throes of those early days of the Sixties. I actually don't remember how it all happened that well. I was writing a lot of songs. But the melody I had learned from Latvian peoples who came as Displaced Persons from Germany &, of course, Latvia in 1940. She had been the wife of the Latvian ambassador to Russia (they came to my first parish in New Lexington, Ohio. The song in its original words & its translation were hauntingly beautiful: Who is crying, what lamenting Sounds so sadly in the night 'Tis the orphan children crying Bound beneath their master's might. I also had learned the first verse in Latvian. But Psalm 137 fit the music well and well, the words came. And for the U.S. in the 1960's it felt right; as well as for South Africa and other places today." --DNAH Archives
