Charles L. Hutchins

1838 - 1920 Person Name: Charles Hutchins Arranger of "GLORIA" in Hymns and Devotions for Daily Worship The Rev. Dr. Charles L. Hutchins was the Rector of Grace Church, Medford, Mass., and was for many years Secretary of the House of Deputies of General Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the U.S.A. He published in 1870 a hymnal with music, words compiled by the Rev. Dr. Herman Griswold Batterson, with some additions. He also published a version of the 1871-74 authorized Episcopal Hymnal. His edition of the 1892 Hymnal was the most popular and most widely used of all the musical editions of this book (of which there were at least six). In 1920, Dr. Hutchins published the Church Hymnal Revised, containing 676 hymns, including all of the hymns in the authorized Hymnal of 1916 except three, and others from the Hymnal of 1892 and elsewhere. In addition, he published in 1872 Annotations of the Hymnal: Consisting of Notes, Biographical Sketches of Authors, Originals and References (the only predecessor to the Companion to the 1940 Hymnal). --The Hymnal 1940 Companion (New York: The Church Pension Fund 1949). No other person made a greater contribution to the evolution of the Episcopal Hymnal in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. 1875 - 1957 Translator of "Gloria in excelsis Deo" in Hymns for Children and Grownups to Use Together Dickinson was the first wo­man to re­ceive a PhD from Hei­del­berg Un­i­ver­si­ty in Ger­ma­ny at a time when wo­men were not gen­er­al­ly wel­comed in gra­du­ate phil­o­so­phy class­es. She was a well known lyr­i­cist, trans­lat­or, and art his­tor­ian who fre­quent­ly lec­tured at Union Sem­in­ary in New York Ci­ty. She and her hus­band Clar­ence (or­gan­ist at New York Ci­ty’s Brick Pres­by­ter­i­an Church for half a cen­tu­ry), wrote hun­dreds of chor­ales and an­thems for church choirs. Translator of many hymns into, and author of a few in, Esperanto, as well as some hymns in English. 13 texts (incl. 3 original) in Adoru, plus two in Espero Katolika's supplement. Edited the largest online Esperanto hymnal, TTT-Himnaro Cigneta, now accessible via the Wayback Machine at archive.org, (https://web.archive.org/web/20091021113553/http://geocities.com/cigneto/pretaj.html) as well as in large part here on Hymnary.org.
