Though Despair, Like Deepest Darkness

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Hymnal: FTLS2017 #74 (2017) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Lyrics: 1 Though despair, like deepest darkness has descended on our land, and discouraged hope of living out our faith by your command, you remind us, God, that sometimes love seems hidden, but shines on, offering new life to all people like the brightness of the dawn. 2 God of love, our dawn in darkness, shine with hope on our despair; give us strength to stand for justice, heart to speak for what is fair. Give us grace to treat our neighbors with both kindness and respect, to befriend outsiders, strangers other people may reject. 3 In our nation so divided, in our world that cries for peace, let your love shine through the darkness, that all fears and doubts may cease. Grant us patience, understanding, and a will to share the light of your love with one another, as we seek to do what’s right. Though Shepherds Heard the Angels

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Hymnal: FTLS2017 #76 (2017) Meter: 7.6.7.6 D Lyrics: 1 Though shepherds heard the angels, the wise men saw a star, a long-awaited signal, and so they traveled far to lay down precious treasures before a little child. His mother bid them welcome, received their gifts, and smiled. 2 Yet Mary must have questioned such gifts for one so small. He could have used a blanket, a rattle, or a ball, not incense for a temple or myrrh for one who’s dead; or gold enough for monarchs to crown his little head! 3 Was this an angel’s warning, a prophet’s clever ruse, to hint at her son’s future and all her thoughts confuse? She paused and, for a moment, was overcome with dread; then Jesus, laughing, smiling, filled her with joy instead. 4 Whatever comes, thought Mary, my son is in God’s care; no matter what his future, God always will be there. She thanked God for these wise men who traveled from afar to bring her son strange presents because of one great star. What Joy It Is to Praise Our God

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Hymnal: FTLS2017 #84 (2017) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Lyrics: 1 What joy it is to praise our God with instruments and voice, and name the countless reasons that God gives us to rejoice, yet some find other ways to show a grateful, loving heart. Thanksgiving is their way of life, and praise is just the start. 2 A statesman gladly hammers out his praise in building homes; a mission mother cares for those who thought they’d die alone. A preacher leads a freedom march, a lawyer aids a child; a bishop helps men face the truth and all are reconciled. 3 God, in the best and worst of times, you bless us many ways. Give us a sense of gratitude that goes beyond mere praise. Like faithful leaders that we know, may we each find a role where we can share love’s healing balm and make the wounded whole. When Jesus Came to Jericho

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Hymnal: FTLS2017 #86 (2017) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Lyrics: 1 When Jesus came to Jericho, a crowd was waiting there. The rabbi’s miracles and deeds were now known everywhere. A tax collector climbed a tree to see above the crowd. The rabbi locked him in his gaze, then spoke his name aloud. 2 Zacchaeus, high up in the tree, looked down with great surprise, and saw his clear reflection in the rabbi’s knowing eyes. He saw himself possessed by greed, dishonest to the core, despised by friend and foe alike for always wanting more. 3 Ashamed, Zacchaeus hung his head, and would have turned away, except that Jesus said, “My friend, We must have lunch today!” Amazed, Zacchaeus raised his eyes to Jesus’ kindly face, and saw the love that welcomed him, redeeming him with grace. 4 From that day on, Zacchaeus vowed to change and make amends for all that he had stolen from his enemies and friends. Whenever someone was in need, he gladly did his part, and all who knew him marveled at his warm and giving heart. 5 Christ Jesus, come, call us by name, and hold us in your gaze, that we may also see and mourn the error of our ways, then joyfully receive your grace, enabling us to see and grow into the persons God envisioned us to be. When Jesus Was Baptized by John

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Hymnal: FTLS2017 #88 (2017) Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Lyrics: 1 When Jesus was baptized by John, the sky was torn apart. The Spirit, like a dove, came down and fell upon his heart. As he rose from that desert spring, a voice from heaven cried: “You are my Son, beloved one, my chosen one, my pride.” 2 Thus Jesus heard his call from God and, gifted with God’s grace, began to spread the light of love in every darkened place. He healed the sick, the blind, and lame; the broken, contrite heart. He called for justice for the poor and all those set apart. 3 Like Jesus, we have been baptized, accepted as God’s own, and in that holy sacrament our mission was made known. The Risen Christ lives on in us, his body here on earth, and we are instruments of grace to give God’s love new birth. 4 Each time we gather at the font, remember who we are: a people charged to love and serve our neighbors near and far; a people called to be a friend to all who are in need, and show that love is just and fair in every word and deed. Topics: Baptism Baptism of Jesus; Baptism Rembering our Baptism Scripture: Isaiah 42:1 Languages: English Tune Title: JORDAN SPRING

When Mary Heard An Angel Say

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Hymnal: FTLS2017 #90 (2017) Lyrics: 1 When Mary heard an angel say that she would have a son, that God would make her mother of the long-awaited one, she questioned that strange promise, yet trusted and believed, and, wonder of all wonders, a child she soon conceived. 2 When Joseph heard an angel call him in his dreams at night to care for Mary and her child, so precious in God’s sight, he listened to each bidding, then trusted and obeyed, and, wonder of all wonders, God’s promised one was saved. 3 When shepherds heard an angel tell the good news of Christ’s birth, that peace, through people of good will, would come to all the earth, they shook with fear, and trembled, then to the stable sped, and wonder of all wonders, knelt down beside his bed. 4 God sent these angel messengers to Mary, blessed one, and faithful Joseph who would care for her and for her son; to ordinary shepherds, at work out on a hill, that, wonder of all wonders, each one might know God’s will. 5 Oh, God, we long for messengers to bring us word today of your great love and plan for us. Oh, come to us, we pray. Surprise us now with angels, and make us all aware that, wonder of all wonders, you also may be there. Who Was There

Author: Mary Nelson Keithahn Hymnal: FTLS2017 #92 (2017) Meter: 9.7.9.6 D First Line: Who was there to hear good news proclaimed Lyrics: 1 Who was there to hear good news proclaimed by an angel from on high? Who was there to hear the glorias that rang throughout the sky? Only shepherds on a barren hill, caring for their flocks that night; only shepherds lifting up their eyes to see the wondrous sight. 2 Who knelt there beside the manger bed of the new-born holy child? Who stood round to sing the angels’ song to Mary, mother mild? Only shepherds bravely greeting him who would rule their hearts one day; only shepherds trusting peace would come to those who walk his way. 3 Who amazed their friends with stories of angel songs, incarnate Word? Who gave thanks and praised God joyfully for wonders seen and heard? Only shepherds, simple folk and poor, on a hill near Bethlehem; only shepherds wise enough to see that Christ had come for them. Topics: Christmas Shepherds Scripture: Luke 2:8-20 Languages: English Tune Title: FIRST TO KNOW
