The Lord My Shepherd Guards Me Well

Author: Carl P. Daw, Jr., 1944- Meter: 8.6.8.6.8.6 Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 80:1 Lyrics: 1 The Lord my Shepherd guards me well, and all my wants are fed: amid green pastures made to lie, beside still waters led. My careworn soul grows strong and whole when God's true path I tread. 2 Though I should walk in darkest ways through valleys like the grave, no evil shall I ever fear; your presence makes me brave. On my behalf your rod and staff assure me you will save. 3 For me a table has been spread where all my foes can see; you bathe my head with fragrant oil to soothe and honor me. My heart and cup are both filled up with joyful ecstasy. 4 Your steadfast love will follow me to shield me all my days and bring me to your holy house, redeemed from error's ways, my whole life long to join the song of those who sing God's praise. Topics: Jesus Christ Majesty Used With Tune: BROTHER JAMES' AIR

Enthroned Amid the Seraphim

Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 80 Lyrics: 1 Enthroned amid the seraphim, Where countless roll the wheels of time, Celestial light, almighty power! Burst forth in this afflictive hour! Effulgent, shine upon our race! Thy ancient mercies, Lord, retrace! 2 From superstition’s dark domain, From persecution’s cruel reign, When erst a tender vine was brought, With joys exuberantly fraught; In regions wrapped in destiny, It rose and bloomed, a lovely tree! 3 Its shade the mountains overspread; Its root, by bubbling fountains fed, Nor drought, nor desert, could arrest; Its branches filled the farthest west: Beside a thousand flowery banks, Its clusters swelled in glowing ranks. 4 Now torn and prostrate its defense, Despoiled of its magnificence, The savage hunter treads it down; It fades beneath a tyrant’s frown; The sword destroys, the fire devours, The Deity in darkness lours! 5 Ah! why deserted of our God? His vineyard, why a field of blood? Return, O God of hosts, return! Thy ravaged, slaughtered church discern! Behold, and victory impart! Thine, ever Thine, shall be our heart! Used With Tune: MELITA Text Sources: The Psalms, Newly Paraphrased for the Service of the Sanctuary by Joseph P. Bartrum (Boston: Russell, Osborne & Company, 1833)
