Charles S. Newhall

1842 - 1935 Hymnal Number: d292 Author of "O Jesus, Master, when today I meet" in Hymns of the Christian Life Born: October 4, 1842, Boston, Massachusetts. Died: April 11, 1935, Berkeley, California. Newhall attended Amherst College and Union Theological Seminary, and was ordained a Congregational minister. He pastored over 25 years, then became associated with the United States Forestry Service and developed a reputation as an outstanding naturalist. 1835 - 1923 Person Name: Henry Hervey Barber Hymnal Number: d81 Author of "Far off, O God, and yet most near" in Hymns of the Christian Life BARBER, HENRY HERVEY: Unitarian; b. at Warwick, Mass., Dec. 30, 1835. He was educated at Deerfield (Mass.) Academy and Meadville Theological School (1861). He held successive pastorates at Harvard, Mass. (1861-66), Somerville, Mass. (1866-84), and Meadville, Pa. (1884-90), while from 1884 to 1904 he was professor of philosophy and theology at Meadville Theological School. Since 1904 he has been professor emeritus. He is a member of the American Historical Association and of the American Economic Association, and from 1875 to 1884 was editor of the Unitarian Review. Emily Greene Balch

1867 - 1961 Hymnal Number: d257 Author of "Now let us all arise and sing" in Hymns of the Christian Life Emily Greene Balch was born near Boston. She graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1889, focusing on economics. She began a teaching career at Wellesley College in 1896 focusing on the economic roles of women, immigration and consumption. She was a longtime pacifist, supporting conscientious objectors. She became a leader in the international peace movement and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1946 for her work with the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF). Dianne Shapiro
