Henry A. Martin

1831 - 1911 Hymnal Number: 201 Author of "The Heavenly King Must Come" in The Hymnal and Order of Service Martin, Henry Arthur, M.A., son of George Martin, Chancellor and Canon of Exeter, born at Exeter July 30, 1831, and educated at Eton, and Christ Church, Oxford, graduating B.A. 1855, and M.A. 1857. On taking Holy Orders he became Curate of Hallow, near Worcester, 1856, and Vicar of Laxton with Moorhouse, Nottinghamshire, 1858. In 1871 he contributed the following hymns to Church Hymns:— 1. Lord of the frost-bound winter. Harvest. Written in 1859. 2. O Rock of Ages, One Foundation. St. Peter. Written in 1871. 3. Sound aloud Jehovah's praises. Holy Trinity. Written in 1870, in 8 stanzas, four of which only are given in Church Hymns. 4. The heavenly King must come. St. John Baptist. In the 1904 ed. of Hymns Ancient & Modern a new hymn by Mr. Martin is included for Passiontide, "Alone Thou trodd'st the wine press, and alone." It was written in Holy Week, 1878. Maria Frances (Hill) Anderson

1819 - 1895 Person Name: Maria F. Anderson Hymnal Number: 382 Author of "Our Country's Voice Is Pleading" in The Hymnal and Order of Service Anderson, Maria Frances. (Paris, France, January 30, 1819--October 13, 1895, Rosemont, Pennsylvania). Baptist. Daughter of Thomas F. Hill of Exeter, England. Married Rev. George W. Anderson, 1847. Author of several works on Baptists and missions for which she often used the pen name, L.M.N. Asked by George B. Ide, pastor of First Baptist Church, Philadelphia, to write a home mission hymn for the Baptist Harp (1849) in the same meter as Bishop Heber's "From Greenland's icy mountains." This hymn, "Our country's voice is pleading" was first sung in a home mission meeting at that Philadelphia church soon after the Baptist Harp was published. Another hymn appearing in the same collection and subtitled "The Bereaved Husband" begins "Yes she is gone, yet do not thou The goodness of the Lord distrust." --Deborah Carlton Loftis, DNAH Archives =========================================== Anderson, Maria Frances, born in Paris, France, Jan. 30, 1819, and married to G. Under this signature the following hymns appeared in Mrs. Brock's Children's Hymn Book, 1881, some of which have passed into other collections:— 1. Again the morning shines so bright. Morning. 2. Lord, we come to ask Thy blessing. Temperance. 3. O my God, I fear Thee. The Fear of God. 4. Our solemn Lent has come again. Lent. 5. Safely, safely gathered in. Death and Burial. The signature of E. O. D. is that of Mrs. Henrietta Octavia De Lisle Dobree, b. 1831. Hyde Wyndham Beadon

1812 - 1891 Person Name: Hyde W. Beadon Hymnal Number: 74 Author of "All Praise to Thee, O Lord" in The Hymnal and Order of Service Beadon, Hyde Wyndham, M.A., born in 1812, and educated at Eton and at St. John's College, Cambridge, B.A., 1835, M.A., 1839. Taking Holy Orders in 1836, he became, in 1837, Vicar of Haselbury Plucknett, near Crewkerne, and, in 1838, Vicar of Latton, Wilts. He is also Hon. Canon of Bristol, and Rural Dean. His hymns were published in The Parish Hymn Book , 1863 and 1875, of which he was co-editor with the Rev. G. Phillimore, and Bp. Woodford. To that collection, in 1863, he contributed the following hymns:— 1. Fierce was the storm of wind. Epiphany. 2. Glory to thee, 0 Lord, Who by, &c. Epiphany. This is usually given as, "All praise to Thee, 0 Lord, Who by," &c, and is found in several hymnals. 3. 0 God, Thy soldiers' crown. A translation of "Deus tuorum militum" (q.v.). This is sometimes given as, "0 Christ," &c. 4. The Son of Man shall come. Epiphany. The peculiarity of these hymns is that they are all in S.M. Henry Albert Becker

1841 - 1884 Person Name: Henry A. Becker Hymnal Number: 641 Author of "Christ Is Risen from the Dead" in The Hymnal and Order of Service Henry A. Becker was born on April 30, 1841 in Mahoning County, Ohio. He graduated from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio and completed his theological studies there in 1866. He was ordained by the Joint Synod of Ohio and pastored churches at St. Paris, Thornville and Delaware, Ohio. He wrote many poems and hymns and also edited the Lutheran Child’s Paper for nearly 10 years and contributed articles to the Lutheran Standard. He died on August 21, 1884. NN, Hymnary editor.
