Frank Leroy Cross

1904 - 2004 Person Name: F. Cross Hymnal Number: 198 Author of "Go forth, strong word of God" in Churches of Christ Hymn Book Cross, Frank LeRoy. (Oklahoma, 1904- ). Evangelical United Brethren. Graduated from United Theological Seminary, Dayton. Pastor in Oklahoma, editor of Lorenz Publishing Co., Dayton. Winner of the Hymn Society of America contest for hymns based on the Bible, with "Go forth, strong word of God," issued at the time of the introduction of the Revised Standard Version. Has written other hymns for various denominations. --Ellen Jane Lorenz, DNAH Archives ========================= Frank Cross is a member of the faculty of Bonebrake Theological Seminary, an institution of the Evangelical United Brethren Church. He is a graduate of Oklahoma City University and had theological training at Bonebrake Seminary. He was the pastor of the First United Brethren Church in Oklahoma City from 1934 to 1946. He has written a number of hymns for the services of his own congregation, and some of these have been used elsewhere. Winfred E. Garrison

1874 - 1969 Person Name: W. Garrison Hymnal Number: 129 Author of "God of our fathers, the strength of our people and nation" in Churches of Christ Hymn Book Born: October 1, 1874, St. Louis, Missouri. Died: February 6, 1969, Houston, Texas. Son of Disciples of Christ minister James Harvey Garrison, Winfred earned degrees from Eureka College, Yale University, and the University of Chicago (PhD 1897). He became president of Butler University in 1904, but health concerns sent him west in 1906. There he served as a delegate to New Mexico’s constitutional convention, and president of New Mexico Normal University and New Mexico State University. He later moved to California, where he established a young men’s college preparatory school. Eventually he returned east, where he taught philosophy and religious history at the University of Chicago, and served as Dean of the Disciples Divinity House and literary editor of the Christian Century magazine (1923-55), and wrote many books. After 10 years of retirement, he answered a call to lead the University of Houston School of Philosophy, where he taught for 13 years into his late 80’s. Mary Ellen Jackson

Jackson Hymnal Number: 532 Author of "Come forth, O Christian youth" in Churches of Christ Hymn Book Mary Ellen Jackson is the Director of Religious Education at the First Presbyterian Church, Anderson, South Carolina. She obtained her M.R.E. degree from the Assembly's Training School, Richmond, Virginia, in 1953; and her A.B. from Winthrop College, Rock Hill, South Carolina, in 1947. She was born in Florence, South Carolina, where she attended the public schools. She taught English and Dramatics in Jenkins Junior High School, Spartanburg, South Carolina; and from time to time has written articles on religious education for various religious periodicals. --Two More New Hymns for Youth by Youth , 1956. William Robertson

1686 - 1745 Person Name: W. Robertson Hymnal Number: 139 Author of "The Saviour comes; no outward pomp Bespeaks His presence nigh" in Churches of Christ Hymn Book Robertson, William, was the son of David Robertson of Brunton in Fife. After finishing his University course he was licensed to preach in 1711. He is said to have been assistant to the minister of the Presbyterian Church of London Wall, London, before his settlement, in 1714, as parish minister of Borthwick, Midlothian. In 1733 he was appointed minister of Lady Yesters, Edinburgh, and in 1736 of Old Greyfriars, and died at Edinburgh, Nov. 16, 1745. He was in 1742 appointed a member of the Committee of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, which compiled the Translations and Paraphrases of 1745, and is said to have contributed 3 paraphrases which, in the 1781 collection, are numbered 25, "How few receive with cordial faith" (p. 536, ii.), 42, "Let not your hearts with anxious thoughts" (p. 672, i.), and 43 "You now must hear my voice no more.” [Rev. Alice Jane Janvrin

1846 - 1908 Person Name: A. Janvin Hymnal Number: 169 Author of "He expecteth, He expecteth! Down the stream of time" in Churches of Christ Hymn Book Janvrin, Alice Jane, daughter of William Janvrin, was born in the island of Jersey on Dec. 13, 1846, but has resided mainly in England. She has written somewhat extensively for the Church Miss. Society and kindred associations. In 1903 she edited the letters of Bishop Ridley, late of New Caledonia, which was published as Snapshots from the North Pacific, and has done other work for the Church Missionary Society. Her hymns include the following:— 1. Great Jehovah, King of Nations. [Opening of Missionary Exhibitions.] Written in 1902, for missionary exhibitions. 2. He expecteth, He expecteth! [Missions.] For the annual anniversary of the C.M.S. Gleaners' Union Miss Janvrin has written a hymn each anniversary during the last ten years. This hymn was written for 1894, and first printed in the service sheet for the meeting. It was printed in the C.M.S. Gleaner, Oct. 1894, p. 159, and included in the Church Missionary Hymn Book, 1899, No. 12. 3. Lord, I know a work is waiting. [Missions.] Also written for the Gleaners' Union, 1898, and printed on the anniversary hymn-sheet. Given in the Church Missionary Hymn Book, 1899, No. 136. 4. Lord of all the ages of Eternity. [Missions.] Written for the Centenary of the C.M.S., in 1889, and sung, on that occasion, at the great gathering of children at the Albert Hall, London. 1882 - 1966 Person Name: B. Braley Hymnal Number: 511 Author of "Lord, we come with hearts aflame" in Churches of Christ Hymn Book Braley, Burton. (Madison, Wisconsin, January 29, 1882--1966). He became a newspaper reported in Montana, later transferring to New York. He was a freelance writer for newspapers and magazines, writing over 100 short stories. Burman Hymnal Number: 357 Author of "Teach me, my Lord, oh, teach me how to live" in Churches of Christ Hymn Book Burman, Ellen Elizabeth, p. 1591, ii., born at Stratford-on-Avon, July 11, 1837, and died at Bristol, March 16, 1861. Her Poetical Remains, with brief Memoir, were published by the Rev. W. Bruce in 1862.
