Asahel Nettleton

1783 - 1844 Person Name: A. Nettleton Hymnal Number: 405 Composer of "[O Thou Fount of ev'ry blessing]" in Songs Of The Church Nettleton, Asahel, D.D., a well-known Connecticut evangelist, was born at North Killingworth, Connecticut, April 21, 1783, and educated at Yale College, graduating in 1809. In 1811 he was licenced to preach, receiving ordination in 1817. He never settled as a pastor with any congregation, but preached in Western Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York; in Virginia, 1827-28; and also in Great Britain in 1831. He died in 1843. His Memoirs, Sermons and Remains were published in 1844. Dr. Hatfield ascribes to him a hymn:— "Come, Holy Ghost, my soul inspire— This one great gift impart;" apparently on no other ground than that it appeared anonymously (as did many others) in his Village Hymns, in 1824, and has been traced no further. Nettleton's hymnological work centred in the compiling of his Village Hymns, from which more hymns of the older American writers have passed into English collections than from any other source. He knew and could appreciate a good hymn, but it is doubtful if he ever did or ever could have written one. [Rev. F. M. Bird, M.A.] --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

Henry Baker

James Baker, Chancellor of the diocese of Durham; born at Nuneham, Oxfordshire; educated at Winchester School; graduated Bachelor in Music at the University of Oxford in 1867. A. Brooks Everett

1828 - 1875 Person Name: A. B. Everett Hymnal Number: 113 Composer of "[Sweetly, Lord, have we heard Thee calling]" in Songs Of The Church Asa Brooks Everett MusDoc USA 1828-1875. Born in VA, he planned to be a doctor, but decided to study music instead. He studied in Boston for four years and also in Leipzig, Germany for four years.. He composed many gospel tunes and edited “The Sceptre” a New York publication. His brothers, Benjamin and Leonard, were also composers. He and Leonard organized a musical instruction system in Richmond, VA, in the 1850s. By 1861, 50 teachers and singing schools were representing them and using their publications. He died in Nashville, TN. John Perry

Margaret Mackay

1802 - 1887 Hymnal Number: 4 Author of "Asleep In Jesus" in Songs Of The Church Mackay, Margaret, was born in 1802, and the only daughter of Captain Robert Mackay, of Hedgefield, Inverness. She was married in 1820 to Major William Mackay, of the 68th Light Infantry (afterwards Lt. Colonel) a distinguished officer who died in 1845. Mrs. Mackay died at Cheltenham, Jan. 5, 1887. In addition to various prose works Mrs. Mackay published Thoughts Redeemed; or Lays of Leisure Hours, 1854, which contained 72 original hymns and poems. [Rev. Jefferson Hascall

1807 - 1887 Hymnal Number: 355 Author of "My Latest Sun Is Sinking Fast" in Songs Of The Church Rv Jefferson Hascall USA 1807-1887. Born in Thompson, CT, he studied at Wilbraham Academy was ordained into the Methodist Church in 1829. He later became a minister and presiding elder over the Worcester Conference. He twice represented New England in the church's General Conference. He was considered an eloquent and powerful speaker and was considered responsible for the conversion over 150 people. Notice of his preaching engagements would fill the seats. He lived in Shrewsbury, MA, about 20 years and was also a public-spirited citizen and was universally respected. He favored education and the suppression of slavery. He married Julia Catherine Griswold in 1832, and after her death in 1842, Lavina Livermore in 1843, and they had seven children: Stephen, Julia, Martha, Henry, Emily, Wilbur, and Lee. Franklin L. Sheppard

1852 - 1930 Hymnal Number: 580 Composer of "TERRA PATRIS" in Songs Of The Church Franklin L. Sheppard (b. Philadelphia, PA, 1852; d. Germantown, PA, 1930) arranged the tune for Babcock's text and published it in the Presbyterian church school hymnal Alleluia (1915), edited by Sheppard (Babcock and Sheppard were friends). After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Sheppard entered the family foundry business in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1875. He was organist at Zion Episcopal Church and later was an elder and music director of the Second Presbyterian Church in Baltimore. President of the Presbyterian Board of Publications, Sheppard also served on the committee that prepared the Presbyterian Hymnal of 1911. In the history of hymnody he is remembered primarily for arranging the tune TERRA BEATA for “This Is My Father's World.” Bert Polman
