Jean Sophia Pigott

1845 - 1882 Person Name: J. Pigott Hymnal Number: 580 Author of "Jesus! I am resting, resting in the joy of what Thou art" in Churches of Christ Hymn Book Jean Sophia Pigott United Kingdom 1845-1882. Born at Leixlip, Ireland, she was a poet and hymn lyricist. She wrote “A royal service and other poems” (1877). She was a sister to William Frederick Pigott ,a missionary to China, He was murdered in the 1901 Boxer Rebellion, along with 76 other missionaries working with missionary, Hudson Taylor, but in other parts of China.. Taylor was overcome with grief to hear of the massacre, and took much comfort in Pigott’s hymn. She died at Leixlip, Ireland. John Perry

George Brandon

1924 - 2001 Person Name: G. Brandon Hymnal Number: 4 Author of "O God, whose mighty wisdom moves" in Churches of Christ Hymn Book Brandon, George. Received his bachelor's degree from the College of the Pacific in 1945, and his degree as Master of Sacred Music from Union Theological Seminary, New York, in 1952. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Stockton, California. --The Hymn Society, DNAH Archives ===================== George Brandon is one of the younger church musicians who is alert to the value of hymns. He received his bachelor's degree from the College of the Pacific in 1945 and his degree as Master of Sacred Music from Union Theological Seminary, New York, in 1952. He is a member of the First Christian Church of Stockton, California, his home town. He has had one anthem published, "The Word Became Flesh." Richard H. Robinson

1842 - 1892 Person Name: R. Robinson Hymnal Number: 575 Author of "Holy Father, cheer our way" in Churches of Christ Hymn Book Mr. Robinson was born in London, became incumbent of the Octagon Chapel, Bath, and in 1884 of St. German's, Blackheath. He wrote Sermons on Faith and Duty, The Creed and the Age. The Methodist Hymn-Book Illustrated ======================== Robinson, Richard Hayes, was born in 1842, and educated at King's College, London. Taking Holy Orders in 1866, he became curate of St. Paul's, Penge. He subsequently held various charges, including the Octagon Chapel, Bath. He became Incumbent of St. Germans, Blackheath, in 1884. His prose works include Sermons on Faith and Duty, 2nd ed., 1873, and The Creed and the Age, 1884. His hymn "Holy Father, cheer our way " (Evening), was contributed to the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge Church Hymns, 1871. It was written in 1869 for the congregation of St. Paul's, Upper Norwood, and was designed to be sung after the 3rd Collect at Evening Prayer. It has passed into several collections (sometimes in an altered form), including Hymns Ancient & Modern., 1875, and Thring's Collection, 1882. See the latter for the authorized text. William Vaughan Jenkins

1868 - 1920 Person Name: W. V. Jenkins Hymnal Number: 556 Author of "O God of love, to Thee we bow" in Churches of Christ Hymn Book Born: September 6, 1868, Bristol, England. Died: June 30, 1920, Bitton, Gloucestershire, England. Jenkins attended Bristol Grammar School and became an accountant like his father. He was active in the mission field, and developed associations with the Tyndale Baptist Church, Highbury Congregational Church, and his own parish church in Bitton. He also served as secretary to the Adult School Union in Bristol, belonged to the National Council of the Adult School Movement, and helped compile the 1909 Fellowship Hymn Book. --www.hymntime.com/tch

John C. Morgan

1831 - 1899 Person Name: J. Morgan Hymnal Number: 333 Author of "All my doubts I give to Jesus!" in Churches of Christ Hymn Book John Coleman Morgan MD USA 1831-1899. Born in Philadelphia, PA, he attended school and became a drug clerk, then a surgeon’s steward in the U.S. Navy. In 1850 he matriculated to PA Medical University, graduating in 1852, studying medicine and homeopathics. He was appointed professor of Materia Medica at PMU. In 1856 he married Sallie Levick of Philadelphia and relocated to Hamilton, IL, finding insufficient infrastructure to practice his medical discipline. He then moved to St. Louis, MO, where in 1857 he co-founded the Homeopathic Medical College of MO. In 1858 he settled in Alton, IL, and, under mentorship of William T Babb, had a surgeon’s commission with the 29th MO Infantry Volunteers during the Civil War. In 1865 he returned to Philadelphia, PA, and took the Chair of Anatomy at the Hahnemannian Institute for Homeopathic Medicine there. From 1867-1875 he was the first faculty surgeon there. In 1875 he left and took a position with the University of Michigan as a professor of Homeopathic Theory and Practice (retaining his Hahnemannian emeritus status while gone). In 1877 he returned to Hahnemannian Institute in Philadelphia and resumed his position there, becoming lecturer of history and instructions In 1886-87. He was a professor of medical instruction 1887-1890, after which he retired to Vineland, NJ. He lived in Millville, and Ocean Grove, NJ, (1898). He edited American Journal of Homeopathic Materia Medica. He died in California. John Perry

Ernest E. Dugmore

1843 - 1925 Person Name: E. Dugmore Hymnal Number: 308 Author of "Almighty Father of all things that be" in Churches of Christ Hymn Book Dugmore, Ernest Edward, M.A., son of William Dugmore, Q.C, was b. at Bayswater, 1843, and educated at Bruce Castle School and by private tutors, and Wadh. Coll., Oxford; B.A. 1867; M.A. 1869. Ordained in 1867, he held the curacy of St. Peter's, Vauxhall, 1867-72, when he became Vicar of Parkstone 1872, and Canon of Sarum and Preb. of Gillingham Major 1900. He published in 1884 Gospel Idylls and Other Sacred Verses; and in 1900 Hymns of Adoration for Church Use. Of his hymns the following were included in the 1904 edition of Hymns Ancient & Modern:-- 1. Almighty Father of all things that he. No. 29 of Hymns of Adoration, 1900, as "For the Opening of an Exhibition." Abbreviated and slightly altered in Hymns Ancient & Modern to adapt it as a "General" hymn. It was originally composed for and used at a small industrial Exhibition held in his Parish. 2. Father Unoriginate. "To the Eternal Father," No. 20 in Hymns of Adoration, &c, in 7 stanzas of 6 lines. Abbreviated and partly re-written in Hymns Ancient & Modern, 1904. 3. Christians, sing the Incarnation. No. 23 in Hymns of Adoration, &c., as a " Processional before the Eucharist," in 7 stanzas of 12 lines, and repeated in full, with slight alterations in Hymns Ancient & Modern, 1904. Originally published with music, separately, at Vauxhall, 1870 or thereabouts. 4. Father, Who hast gathered This dear child to rest. Given in Hymns of Adoration, &c, No. 26, in 11 stanzas of 4 lines, as "For a Child's Funeral," the first line being "Jesu, Who hath gathered," Abbreviated and slightly altered in Hymns Ancient & Modern, 1904. These excerpts from Canon Dugmore's work are by no means the best in the book. Com¬pilers of sacred song should give heed to this fact. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, New Supplement (1907)

Alice Flowerdew

1759 - 1830 Person Name: A. Flowerdew Hymnal Number: 548 Author of "Fountain of mercy! God of love!" in Churches of Christ Hymn Book Flowerdew, Alice, was born in 1759, and married to Mr. Daniel Flowerdew, who for a few years held a Government appointment in Jamaica, and died in 1801. After his decease Mrs. Flowerdew kept a Ladies' Boarding-school at Islington. During her residence at Islington she was a member of the General Baptist congregation, in Worship Street (now at Bethnal Green Road). Subsequently she removed to Bury St. Edmunds, and some years later to Ipswich, where she died Sept. 23, 1830. In 1803 she published a small volume of Poems on Moral and Religious Subjects. This work reached a 3rd edition in 1811, and in that edition appeared her well-known harvest hymn, "Fountain of mercy, God of love," q.v. Mrs. Flowerdew's maiden name has not been ascertained. [Rev.
