When John Baptized by Jordan's River

Author: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926) Hymnal: Moravian Book of Worship #315 (1995) Meter: 9.8.9.8 D Lyrics: 1 When John baptized by Jordan's river in faith and hope the people came, that John and Jordan might deliver their troubled souls from sin and shame. They came to seek a new beginning, the human spirit's ageless quest, repentance, and an end of sinning, renouncing ev'ry wrong confessed. 2 There as the Lord, baptized and praying, rose from the stream, the sinless one, a voice was heard from heaven saying, "This is my own beloved Son." There as the Father's word was spoken, not in the pow'r of wind and flame, but of his love and peace the token, seen as a dove, the Spirit came. 3 O Son of man, our nature sharing, in whose obedience all are blessed, Savior, our sins and sorrows bearing, hear us and grant us this request: daily to grow, by grace defended, filled with the Spirit from above; in Christ baptized, beloved, befriended, children of God in peace and love. New songs of celebration render

Author: E. R. Routley (1917-1982) Hymnal: Hymns for Today's Church (2nd ed.) #343 (1987) Meter: 9.8.9.8 D Lyrics: 1 New songs of celebration render to him who has great wonders done: Love sits enthroned in ageless splendor — come and adore the mighty one! He has made known the great salvation which all his friends with joy confess; he has revealed to every nation his everlasting righteousness. 2 Joyfully, heartily resounding, let every instrument and voice peal out the praise of grace abounding, calling the whole world to rejoice. Trumpets and organs, set in motion such sounds as make the heavens ring; all things that live in earth and ocean, make music for your mighty king. 3 Rivers and seas and torrents roaring, honour the Lord with wild acclaim; mountains and stones look up adoring and find a voice to praise his name. Righteous, commanding, ever-glorious, praises be his that never cease: just is our God, whose truth victorious establishes the world in peace.
