Built on the Rock

Author: Nikolai F. S. Grundtvig, 1783-1872; Carl Döving, 1867-1937 Hymnal: Christian Worship #856 (2021) Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 First Line: Built on the Rock the Church shall stand Lyrics: 1 Built on the Rock the Church shall stand even when steeples are falling. Crumbled have spires in ev'ry land; bells still are chiming and calling, calling the young and old to rest, but above all the soul distressed, longing for rest everlasting. 2 Surely in temples made with hands God, the Most High, is not dwelling; high above earth his temple stands, all earthly temples excelling. Yet he who dwells in heav'n above chooses to live with us in love, making our bodies his temple. 3 We are God's house of living stones, built for his own habitation. He through baptismal grace us owns heirs of his wondrous salvation. Were we but two his name to tell, yet he would deign with us to dwell with all his grace and his favor. 4 Here stands the font before our eyes, telling how God has received us. Th'altar recalls Christ's sacrifice and what the sacrament gives us. Here sound the Scriptures that proclaim Christ yesterday, today, the same, And evermore, our Redeemer. 5 Grant, then, O God, your will be done, that, when the church bells are ringing, many in saving faith may come where Christ his message is bringing: "I know my own; my own know me. You, not the world, my face shall see. My peace I leave with you. Amen." Topics: Church Scripture: Matthew 16:13-18 Languages: English Tune Title: KIRKEN DEN ER ET GAMMELT HUS

Domo malnova estas ĝi

Author: Nikolai Frederik Severin Grundtvig; Hans Amund Rosbach Hymnal: TTT-Himnaro Cigneta #103 Lyrics: 1. Built on the Rock the Church

Author: N. F. S. Grundtvig Hymnal: Concordia #46 (1918) First Line: Built on the Rock the Church doth stand Lyrics: 1 Built on the Rock the Church doth stand, Even when steeples are falling; Crumbled have spires in ev'ry land, Bells still are chiming and calling; Calling the young and old to rest, But above all the soul distrest, Longing for rest everlasting. 2 Surely in temples made with hands, God, the Most High, is not dwelling, High above earth His temple stands, All earthly temples excelling: Yet He whom heav'ns cannot contain Chose to abide on earth with men-- Built in our bodies His temple. 3 We are God's house of living stones, Builded for His habitation; He thro' baptismal grace us owns, Heirs of His wondrous salvation; Were we but two His name to tell, Yet He would deign with us to dwell, With all His grace and His favor. 4 Still we our earthly temples rear, That we may herald His praises; They are the homes where He draws near And little children embraces; Beautiful things in them are said, God there with us His cov'nant made, Making us heirs of His kingdom. 5 Here stands the font before our eyes Telling how God did receive us; Th'altar recalls Christ's sacrifice And what His table doth give us; Here sounds the word that doth proclaim Christ yesterday, to-day the same, Yea, and for aye our Redeemer. 6 Grant then, O God, where'er men roam, That when the church bells are ringing, Many in Jesus' faith may come Where He His message is bringing: I know mine own, mine own know me, Ye, not the world, my face shall see: My peace I leave with you, Amen. Built on a Rock

Author: Nikolai F. S. Grundtvig; Carl Doving Hymnal: Praise for the Lord (Expanded Edition) #82 (1997) Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8.8 First Line: Built on a rock the church doth stand Lyrics: 1 Built on a rock the church doth stand, Even when steeples are falling; Crumbled have spires in ev'ry land, Bells still are chiming and calling; Calling the young and old to rest, Calling the souls of men distressed, Longing for life everlasting. 2 Not in our temples made with hands God, the Almighty, is dwelling; High in the heavens His temple stands, All earthly temples excelling; Yet He who dwells in heaven above Deigns to abide with us in love, Making our bodies His temple. 3 We are God's house of living stones, Built for His own habitation; He fills our hearts, His humble thrones, Granting us life and salvation; Were two or three to seek His face, He in their midst would show His grace, Blessings upon them bestowing. 4 Yet in this house, an earthly frame, Jesus the children is blessing; Hither we come to praise His Name, Faith in our Savior confessing; Jesus to us His Spirit sent, Making with us His covenant, Granting His children the kingdom.
