We'll Understand It Better By and By

Author: C.A. Tindley Hymnal: SE2-1909 #30 (1909) First Line: We are tossed and driven on the restless sea of time Refrain First Line: By and by, when the morning comes Lyrics: 1. We are tossed and driven on the restless sea of time. Sombre skies and howling tempest oft succeeds a bright sunshine, In that land of perfect day, when the mists have roll'd away, We will understand it better by and by. Refrain: By and by when the morning comes, All the saints of God are gathered home, We'll tell the story how we've overcome, For we'll understand it better by and by. 2. We are often destitute of the things that life demands, Want of shelter and of food—thirsty hills and barren lands, We are trusting in the Lord and according to His word, We will understand it better by and by. (Refrain) 3. Trials dark on ev'ry hand and we cannot understand, All the ways that God would lead us to that Blessed Promis'd Land But He guides us with His eye and we'll follow till we die, For we'll understand it better by and by. (Refrain) 4. Temptations, hidden snares, often take us unawares, And our hearts are made to bleed for a thoughtless word or deed, And we wonder why the test when we try to do our best; But we'll understand it better by and by. (Refrain) Languages: English Tune Title: [We are often tossed and driven on the restless sea of time]

A Stranger Cut the Rope

Author: C. A. T. Hymnal: SE2-1909 #31 (1909) First Line: One day, a wayward boy, I stray'd away from home Lyrics: 1. One day, a wayward boy, I strayed away from home, I sought no other joy, Than far away to roam. I saw the ebbing flood, Of a deep and dang'rous lake, And lur'd upon its mud, Was tied there to a stake. Chorus: A Stranger cut the rope, It was my only hope, when my poor soul Upon the shoal of sin and death did lie, The tide was coming in, The consequence of sin; A Stranger heard my helpless cry, And cut the final string. 2. 'Twas early in the day; The sun was shining bright, I thought to go my way, And get back home by night. But when my captor tied Me down and left me there, "No hope for me," I cried, And sank into despair. 3. Afar off on the lake I saw the billows roll, They were making for my stake With breath that chilled my soul. No mortal eye beheld, And no one offered hope, Nor went my friends to tell, Or cut the awful rope. 4. The sun was sinking low, The shadows growing long, The wind began to blow, And night was coming on; Around me angry waves, Began to foam and break, And still I found no way To quit that awful stake. 5. The tide was rising high, 'Twould soon be over me, No one had heard my cry, Or seen my misery. I thought my doom was sealed, And to this seeming fate, I was about to yield, And die fast to that stake. 6. Just then I saw a light, 'Twas hope's fast fading ray, I cried with all my might For help to get away. A stranger's voice now broke Upon my listening ear Saying, "I will cut the rope, I'll help you, do not fear.' 7. He came to me with haste, He reached me just in time, For I'd begun to taste The awful sprays of brine, One blessed, mighty stroke, With weapon keen and sure, He cut that awful rope And brought me to the shore. Travelers to the Heavenly World

Author: C.A. Tindley Hymnal: SE2-1909 #32 (1909) First Line: We are a band of strangers Refrain First Line: Keep your garments pure Lyrics: 1. We are a band of strangers, Traveling thro' this world of dangers, And if Jesus leads the army, We will surely gain the day. Keep your garments pure Unspotted from the world. Keep your garments pure Unspotted from the world. 2. In the midst of tribulation, We rejoice in free salvation, And to every land and nation, We are bound to tell the news. Keep your lamps bright and burning And your vessels filled with oil. Keep your lamps bright and burning And your vessels filled with oil. 3. We are poor and much forsaken, But our faith has not been shaken, And we cannot be mistaken, For the Word of God is true. Ev'ry one shall have deliverance That is written in His book. Ev'ry one shall have deliverance That is written in His book. 4. We are taught to love each other, And as one should treat a brother, We must do by one another, 'Till the Master comes again. You must have the love of Jesus Or you cannot see His face. You must have the love of Jesus Or you cannot see His face. 5. In the resurrection morning, You shall see the judge a coming, And the sons of God a shouting In the Kingdom of the Lord. Every eye shall behold Him When He comes to Judge the world. Every eye shall behold Him When He comes to Judge the world. Languages: English

After a While

The world of forms and changes Is just now so confused That there is found some danger In ev'rything you use; But this is consolation To ev'ry blood-washed child, The Lord will change our station, After a while. Chorus: After a while, after a while, The Lord will change our station, After a while. 2. Old Satan tries to throw down Ev'rything that's good; He'd fix a way to confound The righteous if he could. But thanks to God Almighty That he cannot beguile; And we will be done fighting, After a while. 3. There are some men and women That help the devil on By constantly complaining Of everything that's done, They want to be called Christians And all their badness hide; God will open the secret, After a while. 4. If the preacher in his sermon, Stands up to tell the truth, They'll go about and murmur, With slander and abuse, They want the whole arrangement To suit their selfish style, But God will sit in judgment, After a while. 5. I know we have too many who are living in the dark; They have but little if any, Of Christian work at heart, But thousands, though 'tis stormy, Are marching undefiled; And God will head the army, After a while.
