Phoebe Palmer

1807 - 1874 Hymnal Number: d9 Author of "Swell the note of rapture" in Hymns for use in Sunday Schools Palmer, Phoebe, an American Methodist, b. 1807, and d. in 1874, wrote "Blessed Bible! how I love thee" (Holy Scriptures), and “O! when shall I sweep through the gates" (Heaven Anticipated). Josephine Pollard

1834 - 1892 Person Name: Josepine Pollard Hymnal Number: d11 Author of "Never, never would we part" in Hymns for use in Sunday Schools Josephine Pollard USA 1834-1892. Born at NYC, NY, one of seven children and daughter of an architect, she attended an exclusive girls school, Spingler Institute, and was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church. She was a founding member of the professional women’s club, Sorosis. She never married. She became an author, poet, and hymnist, writing many children’s books and for children’s magazines, including Harper’s, Scribner’s, and the New York Ledger. She wrote 44 books, mostly religious, for children, but also about history, birds, sports and games, and adventure stories. She also wrote 100+ hymn lyrics as well. She worked as an editor for the Sunday School Times and for the Methodist Book Concern, where she edited a magazine for African Americans. Her children’s books include: “History of the U.S.” (1884); “The life of George Washington” ; “The life of Christ for young people”; “History of the New Testament in words of one syllable” (1899); “History of the Old Testament in words of one syllable” (1899); “Bible stories for children” (1899). She was in poor health in her latter years. She died at NYC, NY. 1830 - 1924 Hymnal Number: d39 Author of "Sabbath home, blessed home" in Hymns for use in Sunday Schools Blackall, Christopher Ruby, M.D., born in New York State, 1830, and educated for the medical profession. For 15 years he followed his profession, including service in the army during the civil war. Subsequently he managed, for 14 years, a branch of the Baptist Publication Society, taking at the same time great interest in Sunday School work. He edited the Advanced Bible Lesson Quarterly, for 3 years, and also Our Little Ones. 1. The prize is set before us. Heaven anticipated. This is one of Dr. Blackall's most popular hymns for children. It was written in 1874 for the Sunday School of 2nd Baptist Church, Chicago, Illinois, and set to music by H. R. Palmer. It first appeared in Palmer's Songs of Love for the Bible School, 1874, from whence it has passed into numerous collections, including I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs and Solos, Lond., 1881. 2. Follow the paths of Jesus. Following Jesus. This is included in the Baptist Hymn [& Tune] Book, Phila., 1871, No. 701. 3. Do the right, never fear. Duty . In W. R. T. Bilby

1794 - 1872 Person Name: Thomas Bilby Hymnal Number: d12 Author of "O that will be joyful" in Hymns for use in Sunday Schools Bilby, Thomas , son of John Bilby, born at Southampton, April 18, 1794. In 1809 he joined the army, remaining eight years. Subsequently he studied the Infant School System under Buchanan, whose school at Brewer's Green, Westminster, is said to have been the first Infants' School opened in England. In 1825 he obtained the charge of a Training School at Chelsea, where some 500 teachers were instructed in his system. In 1832 he proceeded to the West Indies, where he introduced his system of teaching. On returning to England, he became the parish clerk of St. Mary's, Islington. He died Sept. 24, 1872. He was one of the founders of "The Home and Colonial Infant School Society." Jointly with Mr. R. B. Ridgway he published The Nursery Book,The Infant Teacher's Assistant, 1831-32; and the Book of Quadrupeds , 1838. His hymns appeared in The Infant Teacher's Assistant, the best known of which is, "Here we suffer grief and pain." -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)
