Sydney H. Nicholson

1875 - 1947 Person Name: Sydney Hugo Nicholson, 1875-1947 Scripture: Luke 9:23-43 Composer of "FENITON" in Together in Song Sydney H. Nicholson, (b. St. Marylebone, London, England, 1875; d. Ashford, Kent, England, 1947) was an organist and church music educator who greatly influenced English hymnody. Educated at Oxford's New College, the Royal College of Music in London, and in Frankfurt, Germany, he became organist at several famous cathedrals, including Westminster Abbey (1919-1928). Nicholson founded and administered the School of English Church Music at Chislehurst in 1927; this important institution, with branches throughout the English-speaking world, was renamed the Royal School of Church Music in 1945. Located in Canterbury after World War II, its headquarters were moved to Addington Palace, Croydon, in 1954. Nicholson was music adviser for the 1916 Supplement of Hymns Ancient and Modern and prepared the way for its 1950 edition. He wrote Church Music: a Practical Handbook (1920) and Quires and Places Where They Sing (1932) and composed operettas, anthems, and hymn tunes. Rowland Hugh Prichard

1811 - 1887 Person Name: Rowland H. Prichard Scripture: Luke 9:28-36 Composer of "HYFRYDOL" in The Faith We Sing Rowland H. Prichard (sometimes spelled Pritchard) (b. Graienyn, near Bala, Merionetshire, Wales, 1811; d. Holywell, Flintshire, Wales, 1887) was a textile worker and an amateur musician. He had a good singing voice and was appointed precentor in Graienyn. Many of his tunes were published in Welsh periodicals. In 1880 Prichard became a loom tender's assistant at the Welsh Flannel Manufacturing Company in Holywell. Bert Polman

David Ashley White

b. 1944 Scripture: Luke 9:28-36 Composer of "BREWER" in Glory to God David Ashley White (b. 1944) is a seventh-generation Texan, born in San Antonio, and he both studied and taught in Texas throughout his career. He majored in oboe at Del Mar College, Corpus Christi, in composition for his Masters in Music at the University of Houston, and received a DMA from the University of Texas at Austin. Since 1977 he has been on the faculty of the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston, teaching theory and composition. White is a widely published composer of many types of compositions and has received many commissions. Selah Publishing Co. published three collections of his hymns. Emily Brink

Arturo Gonzalez

Person Name: Arturo González Scripture: Luke 9:28-36 Arranger of "DIOS ESTÁ AQUÍ" in Glory to God J. Arturo Gonzalez Rivera (BA orchestral conducting, Conservatorio Nacional de Msica; MA choral conducting/Sacred Music, Southern Methodist University) was selected in November, 2009, to be the artistic director of Jubilate! Sacred Singers. He is currently a doctoral candidate in choral conducting at the University of Colorado in Boulder and has also studied at Westminster Choir School and the University of New Mexico under several prominent choral conductors. He was a semi-finalist in the 2009 American Choral Director Association conducting competition. Rivera has been a faculty member of El Paso Community College, the University of Texas in El Paso, East Central College in Saint Louis, Mo., and the University of Chihuahua in Mexico. He has directed choirs and orchestras since age 17 in Mexico, Central America, the U.S., and Spain. He has been guest conductor of the symphony orchestra of the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City and the State Chamber Orchestra and Choir of the state of Queretaro, Mexico and music director of El Paso Association for the Performing Arts, Ballet/Theatre of the Border, East Central Summer Productions, Midwest Lyric Opera, and the Colorado Light Opera. Jaroslav J. Vajda

1919 - 2008 Scripture: Luke 9:28-36 Author of "Jesus, Take Us to the Mountain" in The New Century Hymnal Jaroslav J. Vajda (b. Lorain, Ohio, 1919; d. 2008) Born of Czechoslovakian parents, Vajda was educated at Concordia College in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Concordia Theological Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri. Ordained as a Lutheran pastor in 1944, he served congregations in Pennsylvania and Indiana until 1963. He was editor of the periodicals The Lutheran Beacon (1959-1963) and This Day (1963-1971) and book editor and developer for Concordia Publishing House in St. Louis from 1971 until his retirement in 1986. Working mainly with hymn texts, Vajda served on several Lutheran commissions of worship. A writer of original poetry since his teens, he was the author of They Followed the King (1965) and Follow the King (1977). His translations from Slovak include Bloody Sonnets (1950), Slovak Christmas (1960), An Anthology of Slovak Literature (1977), and contributions to the Lutheran Worship Supplement (1969) and the Lutheran Book of Worship (1978). A collection of his hymn texts, carols, and hymn translations was issued as Now the Joyful Celebration (1987); its sequel is So Much to Sing About (1991). Vajda's hymns are included in many modern hymnals, and he was honored as a Fellow of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada in 1988. Bert Polman

Carl Schalk

1929 - 2021 Person Name: Carl F. Schalk Scripture: Luke 9:28-36 Composer of "SILVER SPRING" in The New Century Hymnal Carl F. Schalk (b. Des Plaines, IL, 1929; d. 2021) is professor of music emeritus at Concordia University, River Forest, Illinois, where he taught church music since 1965. He completed graduate work at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, and at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri. From 1952 to 1956 he taught and directed music at Zion Lutheran Church in Wausau, Wisconsin, and from 1958 to 1965 served as director of music for the International Lutheran Hour. Honored as a Fellow of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada in 1992, Schalk was editor of the Church Music journal (1966-1980), a member of the committee that prepared the Lutheran Book of Worship (1978), and a widely published composer of church music. Included in his publications are The Roots of Hymnody in The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (1965), Key Words in Church Music (1978), and Luther on Music: Paradigms of Praise (1988). His numerous hymn tunes and carols are collected in the Carl Schalk Hymnary (1989) and its 1991 Supplement. Bert Polman
