1813 - 1877 Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:12-20 Composer of "[If Christ had not been raised from death]" in Singing the New Testament Stockton, John Hart, a Methodist minister, was born in 1813, and died in 1877. He was a member of the New Jersey Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and the successive pastoral charges that he filled as a member of that Conference are found in the Conference Journal. He was not only a preacher, but a musician and composer of tunes, as well as hymn writer. He published two gospel song books: Salvation Melodies, 1874, and Precious Songs, 1875. March 25, 1877, was the author of "Come, every soul by sin oppressed" (Invitation), in I.D. Sankey's Sacred Songs and Solos, 1878, and of "The Cross, the Cross, the blood¬stained Cross" (Good Friday) in the same collection. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, Appendix, Part II (1907) =============== Stockton, John Hart. (New Hope, Pennsylvania, April 19, 1813--March 25, 1877). Born of Presbyterian parents, he was converted at a Methodist camp meeting in 1838, being received into full membership in the New Jersey Conference in 1857. Because of ill health he twice took the "supernumerary relations." He withdrew from actual pastoral work in 1874 and engaged in compiling and publishing gospel hymn books, issuing Salvation Melodies that year and Precious Songs in 1875, writing both words and music for a number of the songs. He died suddenly after attending a Sunday morning service at Arch Street Church, Philadelphia. Our Hymnody, McCutchan, has, perhaps, the fullest account of him readily available. --Robert G. J. E. Seddon

1915 - 1983 Person Name: James E. Seddon Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:26-27 Author of "Tell All the World of Jesus" in The Worshiping Church James E. Seddon (b. Ormskirk, Lancashire, England, 1915; d. London, England, 1983) received his musical training at the London College of Music and Trinity College in London and his theological training at the Bible Churchmen's Theological College (now Trinity College) in Bristol. He served various Anglican parishes in England from 1939 to 1945 as well as from 1967 to 1980. Seddon was a missionary in Morocco from 1945 to 1955 and the home secretary for the Bible Churchmen's Missionary Society from 1955 to 1967. Many of his thirty hymns are based on missionary themes; he wrote some in Arabic while he lived in Morocco. Seddon joined other Jubilate Group participants to produce Psalm Praise (1973) and Hymns for Today's Church (1982). Bert Polman

Educated at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri, Herzberger pastored in Carson, Kansas; Chicago, Illinois; and Hammond, Indiana. He was also a pioneer missionary in Arkansas, became the first city missionary (in St. Louis) of the Lutheran Missouri Synod in 1899, and worked for many missionary and charitable causes. Philip W. Blycker

Blycker (b. 1939) is a song writer from Texas who with his wife served as missionaries in Venezuela. They were a major force behind an outpouring of traditional hymn texts written to Latin American music. He joined Camino Global in 1966 and in 1989 became the Music Editor of the Spanish hymnal, Celebremos Su Gloria. He contributed more than a dozen songs to Mil Voces, the Spanish language hymnal of the United Methodist Church. In 2004 they joined the music faculty of the Rio Grande Bible Institute of Edinburg, Texas, on the Mexican border. Sing! A New Creation Philip Blycker, born on March 22, 1939, died on June 11, 2023. A life member of The Hymn Society, Dr. Blycker composed more than 170 Scripture songs in Spanish and about 100 in English. He was also the music editor of the hymnal Celebremos Su Gloria. He taught music for 25 years at the Central American Theological Seminary in Guatemala City, for 15 years at the Puebla Bible Seminary in Puebla, Mexico, and 15 years at the Rio Grande Bible Seminary in Edinburg, Texas.
