Thomas J. Potter

1828 - 1873 Person Name: T. J. Potter Hymnal Number: 206 Author of "Brightly Gleams Our Banner" in Northfield Hymnal No. 3 Potter, Thomas Joseph, was born at Scarborough in 1827, and joined the Roman Catholic Church in 1847, and subsequently took Holy Orders. For many years he filled the Chair of Pulpit Eloquence and English Literature in the Foreign Missionary College of All Hallows, Dublin. He published The Spoken Word; or, The Art of Extemporary Preaching; Sacred Eloquence, or, The Theory and Practice of Preaching; and The Pastor and his People; together with several tales. He translated the Vesper hymns in the Catholic Psalmist; contributed to the Holy Family Hymns, 1860; and published Legends, Lyrics, and Hymns, 1862. His most widely-known hymn is "Brightly gleams our banner" (q.v.). Several of his hymns and translations are in use in Roman Catholic hymnbooks for Missions and Schools. He died at Dublin in 1873. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907) ================ Potter, T. J., p. 901, ii., was b. June 9, 1828 (not in 1827), ordained 1857, and died Aug. 31, 1873. The hymn:— O! yet, once more, in Britain's isle [For the Conversion of England], in the Arundel Hymns, 1902, is stanzas 30, 31, 34, 35, 36 of a piece inhis Legends, Lyrics and Hymns, 1862. It is entitled "The Definition of the Immaculate Conception: or England and Rome," and marked as “Written several years ago .. to be spoken at the Feast of Languages, which is annually celebrated in the Propaganda College at Rome, on the Festival of the Epiphany, . . . now published for the first time." George Thomas Caldbeck

1852 - 1918 Person Name: G. T. Caldbeck Hymnal Number: 110 Composer of "PAX TECUM" in Northfield Hymnal No. 3 George Thomas Caldbeck United Kingdom 1852-1918. Born in Waterford, Ireland, he attended the National Model School, Waterford, and Islington Theological College. His desire to be a missionary was thwarted by his poor health. He returned to Cork and became a schoolmaster and evangelist in ireland. In 1888 he moved to London as an independent itinerant preacher. He was arrested in 1912 for selling scripture cards door to door without a license. The judge dismissed the case upon learning he was composer of the hymn tune” Pax Tecum.”. At the time he was living in a church hostel. He died in Epsom, Surrey. John Perry

Henry Hiles

1826 - 1904 Hymnal Number: 9 Composer of "ST. LEONARD" in Northfield Hymnal No. 3 Born: December 31, 1826, Shrewsbury, England. Died: October 20, 1904, Worthing, England. Hiles was educated at Oxford (BMus 1862, DMus 1867). He played the organ at Shrewsbury, as his brother’s deputy (1846); Bishopwearmouth (1847); St. Michael’s, Wood Street (1859); the Blind Asylum, Manchester (1859); Bowden (1861); and St. Paul’s, Manchester (1863-67). He lectured in harmony and composition at Owen’s College in Manchester (1867) and Victoria University (1879), and was Professor at the Manchester College of Music (1893). He also conducted musical societies in Lancashire and Yorkshire, and owned and edited the Quarterly Music Review (1885-88). He retired in 1904, moving to Pinner, near Harrow. Ellen Lakshmi Goreh

1853 - 1937 Hymnal Number: 266 Author of "In the Secret of His Presence" in Northfield Hymnal No. 3 Goreh, Ellen Lakshmi, daughter of the Rev. Nehemiah Goreh, a Christian convert, a Brahmin of the highest class, was born. at Benares, Sept. 11, 1853. Her mother died in Dec. the same year, and the child was adopted first by a Mr. Smailes. Through the Mutiny in 1857 Mr. Smailes lost his property, and the child was then taken into the family of the Rev. W. T. Storrs and brought to England, where she was educated, and resided until 1880, when she returned to India to take up mission work with her own countrywomen. Through Miss F. R. Havergal's advice and influence Miss Goreh published From India's Coral Strand: Hymns of Christian Faith [1883].
