H. S. Cutler

1825 - 1902 Person Name: Henry S. Cutler Hymnal Number: 212a Composer of "ALL SAINTS - NEW" in Gloria Henry Stephen Cutler (b. Boston, MA, 1824; d. Boston, 1902) studied music in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1844. He moved to England, where he listened with interest to the cathedral choirs and came under the influence of the Oxford Movement. Returning to Boston in 1846, Cutler became organist of the Episcopal Church of the Advent and formed a choir of men and boys, to whom he introduced the wearing of liturgical robes. When he took a position at Trinity Church in New York City, he removed women from the choir and used the occasion of a visit by the Prince of Wales to the church to introduce his newly vested men and boys' choir. He also moved the choir from the gallery to the chancel and initiated the chanting of the psalms and the singing of part of the worship service. Cutler compiled The Psalter, with Chants (1858) and published The Trinity Psalter (1864) and Trinity Anthems (1865). Bert Polman

William Croswell Doane

Doane (p. 303, ii.), was born at Boston, Mass., March 2, 1832, and ordained D. 1853, and P. 1856, in the Prot. Episcopal Church of America. He was Rector of Burlington, N.J., Hartford, Conn, and Albany; and since 1869 Prot. Episco. Bishop of Albany. He is the author of a Biography of his father, and other works. His fugitive verse was collected and published [in 1902], as Rhymes from Time to Time. His hymn, "Ancient of Days, Who [that] sittest throned in glory" (Holy Trinity), was written for the Bicentenary of the City of Albany, 1886. In some collections it begins with stanza ii., "O Holy Father, Who hast led Thy children." For full text see The Hymnal, edition 1892, of the Prot. Episco. Church of America, No. 311. Bp. Edward Husband

1843 - 1908 Person Name: Rev. Edward Husband Hymnal Number: 103 Composer of "ST. HILDA" in Gloria Husband, Edward was educated at St. Aidan's College, Birkenhead. Taking Holy Orders in 1866, he was successively Curate of Atherstone and Folkestone; and in 1878 Vicar of St. Michael and All Angels, Folkestone. In 1874 Mr. Husband published The Mission Hymnal, in which appeared his hymns as follows:— 1. Alas! poor world, I loved thee long. Rest in Jesus. 2. And dost Thou ask me, dearest Lord. Christ's Invitation, " Follow Me." 3. I must have Jesus only. Jesus only desired 4. Sweet Blood, dear ransom of our souls. The Blood of Jesus.
