Thomas E. Powell

1823 - 1901 Person Name: T. E. Powell Hymnal Number: 246 Author of "Bow down thine [thy, your] ear, almighty Lord" in Gloria in Excelsis Powell, Thomas Edward, M.A., son of David Powell, of Loughton, Essex, was born at Hampstead, Middlesex, Aug. 22, 1823, and educated at Oriel College, Oxford (B.A. 1845). Ordained in 1846, he was Curate of Cookham-Dean, near Maidenhead; and then Vicar of Bisham, 1848. He published in 1868, The Holy Feast, and subsequently his Hymns, Anthems, &c, for Public Worship. To this collection he contributed the following hymns:— 1. Again upon the gladdened earth. Harvest. 2. Almighty Fount of love. (1864.) Confirmation. 3. Around Thy throne, 0 God. All Saints. 4. Mr. Powell's Hymns, Anthems, &c., have been privately printed as an Appendix, Hymn Book for use in his parish of Bisham, Berks. The compilation was begun in 1855, and has gradually grown to 97 hymns, of which the above 19 are by the compiler. The dates given above are those of the composition of the respective hymns. J. W. Willmarth

1835 - 1911 Hymnal Number: 170 Author of "O Father, Lord of earth and heaven" in Gloria in Excelsis Willmarth, James W., was born in Paris, where his father laboured as a Baptist minister, Dec. 23, 1835. He entered the American Baptist ministry in 1860. His hymn "O Father, Lord of earth and heaven" (Holy Baptism ) was written in 1867, in 6 stanzas of 4 lines. It was used at a public baptism at Wakefield, Massachusetts, June 30, 1867. In 1871 it was given, abbreviated to 4 stanzas, in the Baptist Praise Book. It was also rewritten in 5 stanzas, and included in the Baptist

C. G. Woodhouse

1835 - 1876 Hymnal Number: 250 Author of "Heavenly Shepherd, thee we pray" in Gloria in Excelsis Woodhouse, Charles Goddard, B.A., son of George Windus Woodhouse, born Aug. 16, 1835, and educated at Albrighton and Christ Church, Oxford, graduating B.A. in 1860. He was for some time Vicar of Minsterley, Diocese of Hereford. He died Aug. 20th, 1876. He was the author of a very tender hymn for "Institution to a Parish," beginning "By the Cross upon thy brow," and consisting of 3 stanzas of 8 lines. It was printed on a fly-leaf. In 1881, Prebendary G. Thring recast the hymn, added a doxology, and gave it as “Heavenly Shepherd, Thee we pray," in his Church of England Hymn Book, 1882. -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)

1777 - 1837 Hymnal Number: 255 Author of "Go, ye messengers of God" in Gloria in Excelsis Marsden, Joshua, a Wesleyan Methodist Missionary in Nova Scotia, and afterwards in the Bermuda Islands, born in 1777, and died in 1837. He published Amusements of a Mission, N. Y., 1812, in which a poem on Missions appeared as "Go, ye messengers of God." Henry Melville King

1838 - 1919 Person Name: Henry M. King Hymnal Number: 479 Author of "Blest word of God, send forth thy light" in Gloria in Excelsis King, Henry Melville, D.D., an American Baptist minister, born at Oxford, Maine, Sept. 3, 1838; educated at Bowdoin College, (1859) and Newton Theo. Institution (1862), and entered the ministry in 1862. He was from 1863 to 1882 Pastor of Dudley Street Bap. Church, Roxbury, Mass., and since of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Albany, N.Y. Besides several prose productions, he is the author of the following hymns in common use:— 1. Christ, our Shepherd, leads us still. [Christ the Divine Leader] Dated 1886. 2. Holy Babe, Mary's Son, Calm the night, &c. [Christmas.] Dated 1886, and revised 1891. 3. O Thou, with Whom a thousand years Are but as yesterday. [For Anniversaries]. Dated 1871. (Oxford, Maine, September 3, 1838--June 16, 1919, Providence, Rhode Island). Baptist. Bowdoin College, 1859 with highest honors; Newton Theological Institution, 1862; Honorary D.Div. from Colby Univeristy, 1877. Pastorates long, few, and conspicuous: 1863-1882, Boston, Massachusetts; 1882-1891, Albany, New York; 1891-1906, at the historic First Baptist Church, Providence, R.I. where he continued as pastor-emeritus until his death. Served as President of the Board of Managers of American Baptist Missionary Union, 1884-1887, and served four years as President of the Rhode Island Baptist Convention. King, an eighth-generation descendant of John Alden of Plymouth and of Francis Eaton, also of the Mayflower group, loved his native New England. With a great interest in history and biographies, he authored a number of historical papers, pamphlets, sermons, and discourses and was a frequent contributor to denominational journals and reviews, including a history of the First Baptist Church of Providence, R.I. King wrote a number of occasional hymns, several of which were published by Pond and Co. of New York. These include an Easter hymn, "Sing, O Heavens and Earth Rejoice" and a Christmas hymn, "Angels Sand the Natal Day." The Sursum Corda (1898) included three hymns by king: "Christ, our Shepherd, Leads Us Still" (1886); "Holy Babe, Mary's Son, Calm the Night" (1886) and "O Thou, with Whom a Thousand Years Are But as Yesterday" (1871).
