William Robertson

1820 - 1864 Person Name: William Robertson (1820-1864) Scripture: Luke 2:13-14 Author of "A little child the Saviour came" in Church Hymnary (4th ed.) Robertson, William, M.A., eldest son of the Rev. John Robertson, D.D., of Cambuslang, Lanarkshire, was born at Cambuslang, July 15, 1820. He studied and graduated M.A. at the University of Glasgow. In 1843 he became parish minister of Monzievaird, Perthshire, where he died June 9, 1864. He was appointed a member of the Hymnal Committee of the Established Church in 1852, 1853, and 1857, and contributed 2 hymns to their Hymns for Public Worship, 1861, since included in their Scottish Hymnal, 1869, which have attained considerable popularity, viz., "A little child the Saviour came" (Christmas), and a version of the Te Deum, which begins, "Thee God we praise, Thee Lord confess." Jack Schrader

b. 1942 Scripture: Luke 2:8-16 Arranger of "CANTIQUE DE NOEL" in The Worshiping Church JACK SCHRADER (b. 1942), arranger, composer, conductor, vocalist, and organist/pianist, is past editor with Hope Publishing Company, retiring in January of 2009. His association with Hope began in 1978. A 1964 graduate of Moody Bible Institute of Chicago, where he majored in Voice and Organ, he also received the Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Nebraska (1966). Further studies in theology culminated in Jack's ordination by the Evangelical Free Church of America (1975). Born in St. Louis, Missouri, he now resides in Wheaton, Illinois, with his wife, Karen. They have three children, Beth, Jonathan and Joel, and currently three grandchildren. Jack is the best selling choral composer in the Hope catalog. In addition to choral music Jack has published collections for keyboardists, instrumentalists and vocal soloists. He was a member of the editorial committee for Hope's most recent hymnal, WORSHIP & REJOICE (2001), in which he has 24 hymn credits. His music is heard in hundreds of churches across the country each Sunday, and he can be seen throughout the year as a guest clinician at choral reading sessions and workshops. --www.hopepublishing.com

Luke Wadden (also known as Luke Wadding) (b. 1628; d. 1691) was born in Ballycogley Castle in Ireland, a still-existing castle built by the Wadding family that dates from the 13th century. They were colonists that prospered after the English invasion of that area, but the family left the castle and lost their lands following the invasion under Cromwell’s rule. He studied in Paris, earned his doctorate, and became bishop of the Roman Catholic diocese of Ferns, in County Wexford, Ireland, sometime around 1683. Emily Brink

Leo Sowerby

1895 - 1968 Scripture: Luke 2:1-20 Harmonizer of "VENITE ADOREMUS" in The Faith We Sing Leo Sowerby (1895-1968) was born in Grand Rapids and studied at the American Conservatory of Music, Chicago (M.A. 1918). He served as regimental bandmaster with the 332nd Field Artillery Band in both England and France (1917-1919). He became the first fellow of the American Academy in Rome, where he studied for three years. He participated in the Salzburg Festival for Contemporary Music in 1923. From 1924 to 1963 he was on the faculty of the American Conservatory. He also was organist and choirmaster of St. James Church (1927-1963). Sowerby had an interest in folk music which he turned into wonderful compositions. He won a Pulitzer Prize for his Canticle of the Sun (1946).
