Died: March 12, 1939, Lit­tle Rock, Ar­kan­sas. Buried: Rose­lawn Ce­me­te­ry, Lit­tle Rock, Ar­kan­sas. Will was the son of Charles Crump Ram­sey and Mar­tha Ann Fran­ces Burns. He mar­ried twice, to Vir­gie Ce­lem­ma Stat­ton and Will­ie Man­na­sas Law­ing. Ramsey moved with his fa­mi­ly to north­west Ar­kan­sas as a child. He stu­died mu­sic in Nor­mal schools un­der Eph­ra­im Hil­de­brand, Ste­phen Os­lin, and Ben­ja­min Un­seld. He be­gan teach­ing shape notes and sing­ing while still a teen­ag­er, and be­came well known in sing­ing schools through­out the Am­er­i­can South. I. Baltzell

1832 - 1893 Hymnal Number: 48 Author of "Waiting at the Cross" in Eureka Carols Baltzell, Isaiah. (near Frederick, Maryland, November 26, 1832--January 16, 1893, Frederick). He was educated in the common schools, and at New Windsor Academy, Carroll County, Maryland. In 1859 he married Cecilia Caroline James at Mountain Jackson, Virginia. Originally a Lutheran, he joined the United Brethren Church in 1847, was licensed to preach by the Virginia Conference in 1854, and ordained in 1856. In 1862 he joined the Pennsylvania Conference. He was presiding elder from 1875 to 1880, and from 1883 to 1889. He was a delegate to three General Conferences, and was a trustee of Otterbein University. In 1873 he was appointed by the General Conference a member of the committee to superintend the publication of Hymns for the Sanctuary. His first compilation was Revival Songster (Baltimore, 1859). He was joint editor, with G.W.M. Rigor, or Choral Gems (1871); joint editor, with E.S. Lorenz, of Heavenly Carols, Songs of Grace, Gates of Praise, Songs of Cheer, Songs of the Kingdom, Holy Voices, Songs of Refreshing, Notes of Triumph, Garnered Sheaves, Songs of the Morning, and The Master's Praise. He was also author of music and services for special occasions, and the editor and publisher of Carols of Praise. See: Shuey, W.A. (1892). James Henry Stanley

1869 - 1954 Person Name: J. H. Stanley Hymnal Number: 12 Composer of "[O I often think of the day to come]" in Eureka Carols James Henry Stanley, Feb. 2,1869 - June 1, 1954, was a singing school teacher, band director and hymn composer. He died in Saltillo, Miss., where he had been a resident for 60 years.He is buried at Springhill Presbyterian Church in Lee County. Bessie Busby

1881 - 1947 Hymnal Number: 90 Composer of "[The beautiful way unto heaven]" in Eureka Carols Bessie L. Busby was born 25 March, 1881, in Rusk County, Texas. When she was just nineteen she and Candis Smith traveled to Enterprise, Indian Territory (later Oklahoma) to study at Stephen Oslin's Eureka Normal School. She was accomplished enough on the organ that Oslin retained her as an instructor for the remainder of the summer sessions. Returning home that fall she began teaching music classes in Rusk County. She married Oscar Still in 1907, who died in 1908; in 1914 she married J. Clayton Todd. Bessie Busby Todd died in Henderson, Texas on 8 June, 1947. Sources: Oslin, S. J. Daniel Webster Crist

1857 - 1929 Person Name: D. W. Crist Hymnal Number: 22 Composer of "[Pleasures that earth can give never are unalloyed]" in Eureka Carols Born: November 28, 1857, New Cham­bers­burg, Ohio. Died: March 24, 1929, Al­lia­nce, Ohio. Buried: Moul­trie Chapel Cem­e­te­ry, Moultrie, Ohio. Son of Ro­bert Crist and Mary Ruff Crist, Dan­i­el grad­u­at­ed from Ohio North­ern Un­i­ver­si­ty in 1882, and taught school in Co­lum­bi­a­na and Stark Coun­ty, Ohio, for 14 years. He be­came su­per­in­tend­ent of the Os­na­burg grade school in 1880, and for three years was su­per­in­tend­ent at New Frank­lin. In 1901, he was elect­ed to the Ohio state le­gis­la­ture, and be­came a state sen­a­tor in 1905. Crist was com­pos­ing as ear­ly as 1888, and at least through 1910, when he scored the FLOWER GIRL WALTZ. He worked for 30 years as a suc­cess­ful mu­sic pub­lish­er, start­ing in Moul­trie, Ohio, where he also taught, farmed, and in New Al­ex­an­der, served as a church mu­sic di­rec­tor and Sun­day school su­per­in­ten­dent. In 1915, he moved to Al­li­ance, Ohio (where he be­came pre­si­dent of the Peo­ples Bank of Al­li­ance). His works in­clude: The Ev­er­green Waltz Joy and Praise for Sun­day Schools, with R. A.
