James Flint

1779 - 1855 Person Name: J. Flint Composer of "HARVILLE" in The New Laudes Domini Flint, James, D.D., born at Reading, Mass., 1779, and graduated at Harvard, 1802. In 1806 he became pastor of a Unitarian Church at East Bridgewater, Mass., from which he passed to East Church, Salem, 1821. Died in 1855. In 1820 he contributed one hymn to Sewell’s New York Collection, and in 1843 he also published A Collection of Hymns, to which he contributed from 10 to 12 originals. His best known hymns are:— 1. Here to the High and Holy One. This hymn, "On leaving an Ancient Church," appeared in the Cambridge Selection of 1828. 2. In pleasant lands have fallen the lines. Remembrance of our Fathers. Written for the bicentenary of Quincy, Mass., May 25, 1840, and published in his Collection, 1843. 3. Happy the unrepining poor. Appeared in Sewell's New York Collection, 1820. Thomas Ravenscroft

1592 - 1635 Person Name: Ravenscroft Composer of "SALISBURY" in Church Hymnal Thomas Ravenscroft United Kingdom 1592-1635. Born at Sussex, England, he allegedly sang in the choir at St Paul’s Cathedral. He attended music lectures at Gresham College. He was educated at Cambridge College, graduating in 1607. From 1618-1622 he was music master at Christ’s Hospital. Many of his works were aimed at pleasing a middle class lay public. He collected folk music: “Pammelia” (1609), “Deuteromelia” [includes the song “Three blind mice”](1609), “Melismata” (1611). He also published a metrical Psalter (the whole book of Psalms) in 1621. He composed 11 anthems, three motets, and four fantasies. He also wrote two treatises on music theory: “A briefe discourse of the true (but neglected) use of charact'ring the degrees” (1614), and “A treatise of musick”. He was an author, compiler, composer, editor, arranger, musician, bibliographer, contributor, antecedent, lyricist and creator. No informaton found regarding family. He died at London, England. 672 works. A reprint of his “Psalms” was published in 1844 by Canon Havergal. John Perry

William Horsley

1774 - 1858 Composer of "HORSLEY" in Book of Worship with Hymns and Tunes Born: November 15, 1774, Mayfair, London, England. Died: June 12, 1858, Kensington, London, England. Buried: Kensal Green Cemetery, London, England. Horsley studied music privately, then became organist of Ely Chapel, Holborn, London, in 1794. He assisted Dr. J. W. Callcott (who encouraged him in persevering at Glee-writing, at which he became successful) as organist of the Asylum for Female Orphans, and married Callcott’s daughter. He succeeded Callcott in 1802, holding that post 52 years. A difference of opinion with the Asylum Committee led to him being dismissed. In 1838 he also became organist of Charterhouse "at a salary of £70 and a room set apart and a fire provided when necessary for his use on those days upon which his duty requires his attendance at the Hospital." He founded the London Philharmonic Society, and in later years was a close friend of Felix Mendelssohn. J. C. Horsley, the eminent painter, relates in his Reminiscences the following experience when he went with his father to one of the services: "When I was four years old my father was organist to the Asylum for Female Orphans, which was a stately building on the Westminster Bridge Road; and one Sunday he took me in with him to the morning service and landed me in the organ-loft. Everything was new and surprising to me, especially the crowd of buxom girls, at least a hundred in number, all dressed alike, ranged right and left of the organ, and who, when the organ had played a bar or two of the opening hymn, sang out with open mouths and such energy that I was positively scared, and in continently accompanied the performance with a prolonged howl; upon which my father, continuing to play the accompaniment with one hand, supplied me promptly with paper out of his capacious pocket, where he always kept a store of backs of letters (envelopes were not invented then), and a silver pencil-case of heroic proportions, thus quieting me." H. W. Greatorex

1813 - 1858 Person Name: Henry W. Greatorex Composer of "GEER" in The Voice of Thanksgiving No. 3 Henry Wellington Greatorex United Kingdom 1813-1858. Born at Burton upon Trent, England, he received a thorough musical education from his father, Thomas Greatorex, who was for many years organist of Westminster Abbey, and conductor of the London concerts of ancient music. Henry became a composer, author, compiler, editor, and arranger of music. He emigrated to the U.S. In 1839. In 1849 he married artist Eliza Pratt, and they had four children: Elizabeth, Kathleen, Thomas, and Francis Henry. Prior to settling in New York City as a music teacher and organist at Calvary Church, he played at churches in Hartford, CT, including Center Church and St Johns Episcopal Church in West Hartford, CT. He frequently sang in oratorios and concerts. For some years he was also organist and conductor of the choir at St. Paul's Chapel. In 1853 he was an organist at St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC. He did much to advance the standard of sacred music in the U.S. In days when country singing school teachers imposed more rudimentary melodies on hymn books. He published a collection of “Psalm & hymn tunes, chants, anthems & sentences” (Boston 1851). He died of yellow fever in Charleston, SC. John Perry

John Bacchus Dykes

1823 - 1876 Person Name: Rev. John Bacchus Dykes (1823-1876) Composer of "ST. AGNES" in Carmina Sanctorum As a young child John Bacchus Dykes (b. Kingston-upon-Hull' England, 1823; d. Ticehurst, Sussex, England, 1876) took violin and piano lessons. At the age of ten he became the organist of St. John's in Hull, where his grandfather was vicar. After receiving a classics degree from St. Catherine College, Cambridge, England, he was ordained in the Church of England in 1847. In 1849 he became the precentor and choir director at Durham Cathedral, where he introduced reforms in the choir by insisting on consistent attendance, increasing rehearsals, and initiating music festivals. He served the parish of St. Oswald in Durham from 1862 until the year of his death. To the chagrin of his bishop, Dykes favored the high church practices associated with the Oxford Movement (choir robes, incense, and the like). A number of his three hundred hymn tunes are still respected as durable examples of Victorian hymnody. Most of his tunes were first published in Chope's Congregational Hymn and Tune Book (1857) and in early editions of the famous British hymnal, Hymns Ancient and Modern. Bert Polman

George Kingsley

1811 - 1884 Person Name: Kingsley Composer of "[My God, I love Thee, not because]" in Good-Will Songs Born: July 7, 1811, Northampton, Massachusetts. Died: March 14, 1884, Northampton, Massachusetts. Kingsley played the organ at the Old South Church and Hollis Street Church in Boston, Massachusetts.
