I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above

Author: Cecil Arthur Spring-Rice (1859-1918) Hymnal: Church Hymnary (4th ed.) #704 (2005) Meter: 13.13.13.13.13.13 Scripture: 2 Corinthians 4:8-11 Lyrics: 1 I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above, entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love: the love that asks no question, the love that stands the test, that lays upon the altar the dearest and the best; the love that never falters, the love that pays the price, the love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice. 2 And there's another country I've heard of long ago, most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know; we may not count her armies, we may not see her King; her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering; and soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, and her ways are ways of gentleness and all her paths are peace. Topics: The Holy Spirit The Church Celebrates - National Life; Remembrance Sunday; Stages of Life Languages: English Tune Title: THAXTED

Beams of Heaven

Author: Charles A. Tindley, 1851-1933 Hymnal: Lift Up Your Hearts #454 (2013) Scripture: 2 Corinthians 4:8-10 First Line: Beams of heaven, as I go Refrain First Line: I do not know how long 'twill be Lyrics: 1 Beams of heaven, as I go through this wilderness below, guide my feet in peaceful ways, turn my midnights into days. When in the darkness I would grope, faith always sees a star of hope, and soon from all life's grief and danger I shall be free someday. Refrain: I do not know how long 'twill be, nor what the future holds for me, but this I know: if Jesus leads me, I shall get home someday. 2 Oftentimes my sky is clear, joy abounds without a tear; though a day's so bright begun, clouds may hide tomorrow's sun. There'll be a day that's always bright, a day that never yields to night, and in its light the streets of glory I shall behold someday. [Refrain] 3 Burdens now may crush me down, disappointments all around, troubles speak in mournful sigh, sorrow through a tear stained eye. There is a world where pleasure reigns, no mourning soul shall roam its plains, and to that land of peace and glory I want to go someday. [Refrain] Topics: Darkness; Death and Dying; Eternal Life; Old Age Languages: English Tune Title: SOME DAY

Praise the One Who Breaks the Darkness

Author: Rusty Edwards (1955-) Hymnal: Common Praise (1998) #397 (1998) Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Scripture: 2 Corinthians 4:1-6 Lyrics: 1 Praise the one who break the darkness with a liberating light. Praise the one who frees the prisoners, turning blindness into sight. Praise the one who preached the gospel, healing every dread disease, calming storms and feeding thousands with the very bread of peace. 2 Praise the one who blessed the children with a strong yet gentle word. Praise the one who drove out demons with a piercing two-edged sword. Praise the one who brings cool water to the desert's burning sand. From this well comes living water quenching thirst in every land. 3 Praise the one true love incarnate: Christ who suffered in our place. Jesus died and rose for many that we may know God by grace. How Clear Is Our Vocation, Lord

Author: Fred Pratt Green Hymnal: Glory to God #432 (2013) Meter: 8.6.8.8.6.6 Scripture: 2 Corinthians 4:7-12 Lyrics: 1 How clear is our vocation, Lord, when once we heed your call to live according to your word and daily learn, refreshed, restored, that you are Lord of all and will not let us fall. 2 But if, forgetful, we should find your yoke is hard to bear; if worldly pressures fray the mind and love itself cannot unwind its tangled skein of care: our inward life repair. 3 We marvel how your saints became in hindrances more sure: whose joyful virtues put to shame the casual way we wear your name, and by our faults obscure your power to cleanse and cure. 4 In what you give us, Lord, to do, together or alone, in old routines or ventures new, may we not cease to look to you: the cross you hung upon, all you endeavored, done.
