Out of deep, unordered water

Author: Fred Kaan, 1929- Hymnal: The Book of Praise #515 (1997) Scripture: 1 Corinthians 10:1-3 Refrain First Line: There is water in the river Lyrics: 1 Out of deep, unordered water God created light and land, world of bird and beast and, later, two-some people: woman, man. Refrain: There is water in the river bringing life to tree and plant. Let creation praise its giver: there is water in the font. 2 Water on the human forehead, birthmark of the love of God, is the sign of death and rising; through the seas there runs a road. [Refrain] 3 Standing round the font reminds us of the Hebrews' climb ashore. Life is hallowed by the knowledge God has been this way before. [Refrain] Topics: Children and Youth Baptism; Creation; Exodus; Sacraments and Ordinances Baptism Languages: English Tune Title: BALGEMANN

In Water We Grow

Author: Brian Wren, 1936- Hymnal: Worship and Rejoice #678 (2003) Meter: 10.10.11.11 Scripture: 1 Corinthians 10:1-4 First Line: In water we grow, secure in the womb Lyrics: 1 In water we grow, secure in the womb, and speechlessly know love's safety and room. Baptizing and blessing, we publish for good the freeing, caressing safekeeping of God. 2 In water we wash: the dirt of each day, its trouble and rush are carried away. In Christ recreated by love's cleansing art, self will and self hatred dissolve and depart. 3 In water we dive, and cannot draw breath, then surface alive, rebounding from death. Our old self goes under, in Christ dead and drowned. We rise, washed in wonder, by love clad and crowned. 4 In water we dwell, for by its deep flow through bloodstream and cell, we live, think, and grow. Praise God, love outflowing, whose well of new birth baptizes our knowing, and waters the earth. Languages: English Tune Title: STANLEY BEACH

Great God should we thy grace abuse

Hymnal: Church Hymn Book #CXV (1816) Meter: 8.6.8.6 Scripture: 1 Corinthians 10:6-13 Lyrics: 1 Great God should we thy grace abuse, Thy love and pow'r disown! As did the disobedient Jews, Who brought thy judgments down. 2 Thy bounteous hand on them bestowed What e'er their wants suppli'd; Yet they provoked thee their God, Until they were distroy'd. 3 Thy mercies long with sinners bear, Thy blessing them pursue; But thy strict judgments every where, Must punish vices too. 4 God spared not his chosen race, Though long he prov'd their friend; When long they had abus'd his grace, They perish'd in the end. 5 Should we like they suppose we stand, And therefore live secure; Our house is built upon the sand, And our destruction sure. 6 Then let us ever watch and pray, Be always on our guard; Lest like the Jew's we run astray, And thus forsake the Lord. Supported by especial grace

Hymnal: Church Hymn Book #XLVI (1816) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Scripture: 1 Corinthians 10:1-5 Lyrics: 1 Supported by especial grace, And by superior pow'r upheld, The faithful christian runs his race, To gain the vict'ry and the field. 2 But O, how foolish and unwise! Could it be truly said to be? For those who fain would gain the prize And yet not strive for mastery. 3 To gain the never fading crown, Each reigning sin must be subdu'd; The haughty spirit must come down, And yield unto the ways of God. 4 The soul, with carnal mind beset, Can never speed in holiness: But still oppress'd with ev'ry weight Of sin, and burthens of distress. 5 All candidates for Glory must, Be watching unto constant pray'r-- To crucify their pride and lust, If they desire the crown to wear. 6 May I be wise to act my part, And evermore be on my guard, To watch and pray with all my heart, And wait the comming of my Lord.
