Theodore Chickering Williams

1855 - 1915 Hymnal Number: d281 Author of "When thy heart [with joy] o'erflowing Sings a thankful prayer" in Devotional Hymns Williams, Theodore Chickering, an American Unitarian minister, b. at Brookline, Mass., in 1855, and educated at Harvard, 1876, and the Harvard Divinity School, 1882. He was from 1882 to 1896 pastor of All Souls, N. Y., and has been since 1899 headmaster of Hackley School, Tarrytown, N.Y. His hymns include:— 1. As the storm retreating leaves the vales in peace. [Evening.] (1888). 2. Glory to God on high . . . Let the whole creation cry. [Praise.] (1889). 3. I long did roam afar from home. [Brought Home by Christ.] (1889). 4. Lord, Who dost the voices bless. [Ordination.] (1881). 5. My heart of dust was made. [The Image of God desired.] This is Anon, in Amore Dei, but in the Index of Authors thereto it is given to this author. 6. When thy heart with joy o'erflowing. [Unity with others desired.] (1891). These facts and dates are from Mrs. Theodore C. (Brookline, Massachusetts, July 2, 1855--May 6, 1915, Boston, Mass.). He graduated from Harvard College in 1876, and from the Harvard Divinity School in 1882. He was ordained minister of the Unitarian Church in Winchester, Mass., in 1882, but became minister of All Souls' Church, New York, in 1883. He resigned in 1896, and spent two years in Europe. After his return he served as headmaster of Hackley School, Tarrytown, New York, 1899-1905. A classical scholar, and gifted as a poet, he published a fine metrical translation of Virgil's Aeneid, wrote a number of hymns which are religious poetry of a high order, and assisted his wife, Velma C. Henry Melville King

1838 - 1919 Person Name: Henry M. King Hymnal Number: d14 Author of "Blest word of God, send forth thy light" in Devotional Hymns King, Henry Melville, D.D., an American Baptist minister, born at Oxford, Maine, Sept. 3, 1838; educated at Bowdoin College, (1859) and Newton Theo. Institution (1862), and entered the ministry in 1862. He was from 1863 to 1882 Pastor of Dudley Street Bap. Church, Roxbury, Mass., and since of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Albany, N.Y. Besides several prose productions, he is the author of the following hymns in common use:— 1. Christ, our Shepherd, leads us still. [Christ the Divine Leader] Dated 1886. 2. Holy Babe, Mary's Son, Calm the night, &c. [Christmas.] Dated 1886, and revised 1891. 3. O Thou, with Whom a thousand years Are but as yesterday. [For Anniversaries]. Dated 1871. (Oxford, Maine, September 3, 1838--June 16, 1919, Providence, Rhode Island). Baptist. Bowdoin College, 1859 with highest honors; Newton Theological Institution, 1862; Honorary D.Div. from Colby Univeristy, 1877. Pastorates long, few, and conspicuous: 1863-1882, Boston, Massachusetts; 1882-1891, Albany, New York; 1891-1906, at the historic First Baptist Church, Providence, R.I. where he continued as pastor-emeritus until his death. Served as President of the Board of Managers of American Baptist Missionary Union, 1884-1887, and served four years as President of the Rhode Island Baptist Convention. King, an eighth-generation descendant of John Alden of Plymouth and of Francis Eaton, also of the Mayflower group, loved his native New England. With a great interest in history and biographies, he authored a number of historical papers, pamphlets, sermons, and discourses and was a frequent contributor to denominational journals and reviews, including a history of the First Baptist Church of Providence, R.I. King wrote a number of occasional hymns, several of which were published by Pond and Co. of New York. These include an Easter hymn, "Sing, O Heavens and Earth Rejoice" and a Christmas hymn, "Angels Sand the Natal Day." The Sursum Corda (1898) included three hymns by king: "Christ, our Shepherd, Leads Us Still" (1886); "Holy Babe, Mary's Son, Calm the Night" (1886) and "O Thou, with Whom a Thousand Years Are But as Yesterday" (1871). Ebenezer S. Oakley

1865 - 1935 Hymnal Number: d103 Author of "In life's earnest morning" in Devotional Hymns Oakley, Ebenezer Sherman, M.A., son of the Rev. Henry Oakley, Congregational Minister, was b. Dec. 24, 1865, at Richmond, Yorks. He studied in arts at Glasgow Univ., and in theology at Airedale College, Bradford, and the Univ. of Giessen, and took his M.A. at the Univ. of Allahabad in N. India. He is now (1906) missionary of the L.M.S. at Almora in N. India, and Principal of Ramsay College there. He contributed three hymns to Dr. John Hunter's Hymns of Faith and Life, 1889 and 1896, from which Nos. 1 and 2 passed into the Public School Hymn Book, 1903, and Worship Song, 1905. 1. Enduring Soul of all our life. [Whitsuntide.] Written 1885; in Hunter, 1889, No. 176. 2. In life's earnest morning. Adelaide M. Plumptre

1871 - 1948 Hymnal Number: d127 Author of "Keep thyself pure, Christ's soldier, hear" in Devotional Hymns Plumptre, Adelaide Mary (Wynne Willson). (Hanborough, England, January 22, 1871--September 1948, Toronto, Ontario). Anglican. Studied, then taught, at Somerville College, Oxford, before marrying (1901) Henry Pemberton Plumptre and coming to Canada, where he became chaplain of Wycliffe College, Toronto (1901-1903) and curate of St. George's, Montreal (1903-1908) before returning briefly to England. In 1909 he came back to Toronto as rector of St. James' Cathedral, succeeding Edward Ashurst Welch; after his retirement in 1935, the couple lived on in Toronto, where Adelaide Plumptre published a pamphlet of hymns just before her death. "Keep thyself pure!", which the Book of Common Praise (1908 and 1938) included, dates from 1907, when the temperance movement in Canada was reaching its height. --Hugh D. McKellar, DNAH Archives
