Michael Schirmer

1606 - 1673 Person Name: Michael Schirmer, 1606-73 Scripture: 2 Corinthians 4:4-7 Author of "O Holy Spirit, enter in" in Together in Song Schirmer, Michael, son of Michael Schirmer, inspector of wine casks at Leipzig, was born at Leipzig, apparently, in July, 1606, his baptism being entered as on July 18, in the registers of St. Thomas's Church there. He matriculated at the University of Leipzig, at Easter, 1619, and graduated M.A. in 1630. In 1636 he was appointed subrector, and in 1651 conrector of the Greyfriars Gymnasium at Berlin. During his conrectorship the rectorship fell vacant several times, and each time, after he had officiated as prorector during the vacancy, a younger man than he was set over him (probably on account of Schirmer's feeble health) till, last of all, in May, 1668, the sub-rector was promoted over his head. In the same year Schirmer retired from office. The remainder of his life he spent in Berlin, where he published, in the end of 1668, a version of the Aeneid in German Alexandrine verse, wrote various occasional poems, &c. He died at Berlin, apparently on May 4, and was certainly buried there, in the churchyard of the Kloster Kirche, on May 8, 1673…. Schirmer had many domestic and personal afflictions to bear. His wife and his two children predeceased him. The early part of his life in Berlin was spent amid the distress caused by the Thirty Years War, during which Brandenburg, and Berlin itself, suffered greatly from pestilence and poverty. In 1644 a deep melancholy fell upon him, which lasted for five years; and something of the same kind seems to have returned to him for a time, after his wife's death, in Feb. 1667. Schirmer was crowned as a poet in 1637. His earlier productions were mostly occasional pieces in German and Latin. In 1655 he published, at Berlin, a metrical version of Ecclesiasticus as, Das Buch Jesus Sirach, &c.; and in 1660, also at Berlin, a Scriptural play, which was acted by the scholars of the Gymnasium, and was entitled Der verfolgte David, &c. He also published, at Berlin, in 1650, versions of the Songs of the Old and New Testament as, Biblische Lieder und Lehrsprüche. The only compositions by him which have come into use as hymns, are those which he contributed to J. Crüger's Newes vollkömliches Gesang-Buch, Berlin, 1640; and to Crüger's Praxis pietatis melica, Berlin, 1648, &c. These, have in all, passed into many German hymnbooks of the 17th century, and most of them are still in use. They were reprinted by Dr. Bachmann …together with various selections irom his other poetical compositions. They are practical, clear, objective, churchly hymns, somewhat related to those of Gerhardt; and still more closely to those of Johann Heermann, from whom indeed Schirmer borrows a few expressions. The only hymn by Schirmer which has passed into English is:— 0 heilger Geist, kehr bei uns ein. Whitsuntide. First published, 1640, as above, No. 75, in 7 stanzas of 10 lines, entitled, "Another short hymn for Whitsuntide, M. Michael Schirmers." … Translated as:— 1. 0 Holy Ghost, desoend, we pray. This is a somewhat free translation of st. i., v., ii., iii., by W. M. Reynolds, as No. 794, in the American Lutheran Gen. Synod's Collection, 1850; and is repeated, with translations of st. iv., vi., vii., added, as No. 103, in the Ohio Lutheran Hymnal, 1880. 2. 0 Holy Spirit, enter in. This is a good translation, omitting st. ii., iv., by Miss Winkworth, in her Chorale Book for England, 1863, No. 70. It was repeated, as No. 249, in the Pennsylvania Luth. Church Book, 1868. In Dr. Thomas's Augustine Hymn Book, 1866, it is Nos. 480, 481; No. 481 beginning, "O mighty Rock, O source of Life," which is the tr. of st. v. [Rev. Cyril Alington

Ipswich, England, 1872; d. St. Leonards, Hertfordshire, England, 1955) was ordained a priest in the Church of England in 1901. He had a teaching career that included being headmaster at Shrewsbury School and Eton College. He was dean of Durham from 1933-1951 as well as chaplain to the king of England. His writings include literary works and Christianity in England, Good News (1945). Melchior Vulpius

1570 - 1615 Person Name: Melchior Vulpius, c.1560-1616 Scripture: 2 Corinthians 4:11 Composer of "GELOBT SEI GOTT" in RitualSong Born into a poor family named Fuchs, Melchior Vulpius (b. Wasungen, Henneberg, Germany, c. 1570; d. Weimar, Germany, 1615) had only limited educational oppor­tunities and did not attend the university. He taught Latin in the school in Schleusingen, where he Latinized his surname, and from 1596 until his death served as a Lutheran cantor and teacher in Weimar. A distinguished composer, Vulpius wrote a St. Matthew Passion (1613), nearly two hundred motets in German and Latin, and over four hundred hymn tunes, many of which became popular in Lutheran churches, and some of which introduced the lively Italian balletto rhythms into the German hymn tunes. His music was published in Cantiones Sacrae (1602, 1604), Kirchengesangund Geistliche Lieder (1604, enlarged as Ein schon geistlich Gesanglmch, 1609), and posthumous­ly in Cantionale Sacrum (1646). Robert J. Batastini

Batastini is the retired vice president and senior editor of GIA Publications, Inc., Chicago. Bob has over fifty-five years of service in pastoral music ministry, having served several parishes in the Archdiocese of Chicago and one in the Diocese of Joliet. He served as executive editor and project director for the Worship hymnals (three editions), Gather hymnals (three editions), Catholic Community Hymnal, and as executive editor of RitualSong. In 1993 he became the first recipient of the Father Lawrence Heimann Citation for lifetime contribution to church music and liturgy in the U.S., awarded by St. Joseph's College, Rensselaer, Indiana, and was named "Pastoral Musician of the Year-2000" by the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM). At its 2006 conference, he was named a Fellow of the Hymn society in the United States and Canada. In his retirement he is active in the music ministry of St. Francis de Sales Parish, Holland, MI. George Rawson

1807 - 1889 Scripture: 2 Corinthians 4:9 Author of "Comfort" in Laudes Domini Born: June 5, 1807, Leeds, England. Died: March 25, 1889, Clifton, England. Buried: Arno’s Vale Cemetery, Bristol, England. Pseudonym: A Leeds Layman. Rawson, George, was born June 5, 1807, at Leeds, in which town he practised for many years as a solicitor. In 1853 he assisted the Congregational ministers of Leeds in the compilation of Psalms, Hymns, and Passages of Scripture for Christian Worship, a volume commonly known as the Leeds Hymn-book. Mr. Rawson was a member of the Congregational body. In 1858 he also assisted Rev. Dr. Green and other Baptist ministers in the preparation of Psalms and Hymns for the use of the Baptist Denomination. A number of Mr. Rawson's own compositions first appeared in this and in the Leeds Hymn-book In 1876 he published his Hymns, Verses and Chants (Hodder and Stoughton, London), including his previously published hymns, and containing (exclusive of chants) 80 original pieces. In 1885 most of these, with several additional hymns, were published by the R. T. S. under the title Songs of Spiritual Thought. Mr. Rawson died March 25, 1889. His hymns are distinguished by refinement of thought, and delicacy and propriety of language; and if they do not attain the first rank among the songs of the Christian Church, many are of great excellence. The most widely known are, "By Christ redeemed, in Christ restored;" "Come to our poor nature's night;" "Father in high heaven dwelling;" "In the dark and cloudy day;" and "Reaper, behold the fields are white." In the Leeds Hymn-book, 1853, and the Baptist Psalms & Hymns, 1858, there are also several recasts of and additions to the hymns of other writers. In addition to Mr. Rawson's hymns which are annotated under their respective first lines, the following are also in common use:- i. From the Leeds Hymn-book, 1853. 1. Captain and Saviour of the host. Louis M. Gottschalk

1829 - 1869 Person Name: fr. Gottschalk Scripture: 2 Corinthians 4:9 Arranger of "LAST HOPE" in Laudes Domini Louis Moreau Gottschalk USA 1829-1869. Born in New Orleans, LA, to a Jewish father and Creole mother, he had six siblings and half-siblings. They lived in a small cottage in New Orleans. He later moved in with relatives (his grandmother and a nurse). He played the piano from an early age and was soon recognized as a prodigy by new Orleans bourgeois establishments. He made a performance debut at the new St. Charles Hotel in 1840. At 13 he left the U.S. And went to Europe with his father, as they realized he needed classical training to fulfill his musical ambitions. The Paris Conservatory rejected him without hearing him play on the grounds of his nationality. Chopin heard him play a concert there and remarked, “Give me your hand, my child, I predict that you will become the king of pianists. Franz Liszt and Charles Valentin Alkan also recognized his extreme talent. He became a composer and piano virtuoso, traveling far and wide performing, first back to the U.S., then Cuba, Puerto Rico, Central and South America. He was taken with music he heard in those places and composed his own. He returned to the States, resting in NJ, then went to New York City. There he mentored a young Venezuelan student, Carreno, and became concerned that she succeed. He was only able to give her a few lessons, yet she would remember him fondly and play his music the rest of her days. A year after meeting Gottschalk, she performed for President Lincoln and went on to become a renowned concern pianist, earning the nickname “Valkyrie of the Piano”. Gottschalk was also interested in art and made connections with notable figures of the New York art world. He traded one of his compositions to his art friend, Frederic Church, for one of Church's landscape paintings. By 1860 Gootschalk had established himself as the best known pianist in the New World. He supported the Union cause during the Civil War and returned to New Orleans only occasionally for concerts. He traveled some 95,000 miles and gave 1000 concerts by 1865. He was forced to leave the U.S. later that year as a result of a scandelous affair with a student at Oakland Female Seminary in Oakland, CA. He never came back to the U.S. He went to South America giving frequent concerts. At one, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, he collapsed from yellow fever as he played a concert. He died three weeks later, never recovering from the collapse, possibly from an overdose of quinine or an abdominal infection. He was buried in Brooklyn, NY. Though some of his works were destroyed or disappeared after his death, a number of them remain and have been recorded by various artists. John Perry
