(Gaevle, Sweden, November 30, 1767--February 29, 1844). Lutheran. Ordained in 1793, he was briefly pastor of the German church in Norrkoeping, then appointed rector (1805) at Tuna and Stavby and (1821) at Sigtune and Altuna; assisted Archbishop J.O. He was educated at the College of Wooster (B.A., 1952), Columbia University (M.A., 1954), and Union Theological Seminary (D.S.M., 1964). He taught at the University of South Dakota (1959-1962), Oklahoma Baptist University (1962-1964), and Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. A composer of choral and instrumental music, and an author of articles and reviews in music journals. --William J. William Maccall

Maccall Hymnal Number: d85 Author of "In heaven above, in heaven above" in Hymns and Songs for Church Schools Maccall, William, son of William Maccall, was born at Largs, Ayrshire, Scotland, Feb. 25, 1812. In 1868, he published several translations from the Danish as Hymns of Denmark by Gilbert Tait. He has also published Hymns of Sweden rendered into English. Died: November 9, 1888, Bexley Heath (near London), England. Maccall earned a Master of Arts degree from the University of Glasgow, then studied theology in Geneva, Switzerland. Ordained a Unitarian minister, he pastored in Bolton, Lancashire (1837-40) and Crediton, Devonshire (1841-46), then moved to London. 1831 - 1911 Person Name: John Samuel Jones Hymnal Number: d80 Author of "I was made a Christian" in Hymns and Songs for Church Schools Born: March 2, 1831, London, England. Died: 1911, London, England. Jones, John Samuel, b. in London in 1831 and ordained in Ireland in 1858. He has held several benefices, including St. Philip, Clerk en well; Christ Church, Liverpool; and Knight's Enham, Hants. His hymns include:— 1. I was made a Christian. [For the young.] Written about 1880 for use at Enham Sunday School, and published in The Children's Hymn Book, 1881, and subsequently in the 1904 ed. of Hymns Ancient & Modern. 2. Now the busy week is done. [Saturday Evening.] This hymn is attributed on p. 1582, ii.. to the Rev. S. J. Jones, Rector of Batsford, in error. It was contributed to the 1889 Suppl. 1866 - 1938 Hymnal Number: d157 Author of "Praise to thee and adoration" in Hymns and Songs for Church Schools Kristen Rolfsen Kvamme, 1866-1938 Born: February 17, 1866, Lom, Gudbrandsdalen, Norway. Died: January 14, 1938, Ossian, Iowa. Buried: Stavanger Lutheran Church Cemetery, Ossian, Iowa. Kvamme emigrated to America at age 16, settling in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where he worked a few years. He spent the winter of 1886 at an academy, and in the fall of 1888 entered Luther College. He went on to serve as a Lutheran minister in Ossian, Iowa. --www.hymntime.com/tch/

1870 - 1950 Hymnal Number: d108 Author of "Look upon us blessed Lord" in Hymns and Songs for Church Schools Born: July 8, 1870, Dublin, Ireland. Died: April 26, 1950, Cambridge, England. Buried: Parish of the Ascension Burial Ground (formerly St. Giles’ Burial Ground), Cambridge, England. A Cambridge University graduate, Macalister’s passion was archaeology. He was a contributor to the Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, and directed digs for the Palestine Excavation Fund (1900-09, 1923-24). He also played the organ and directed the choir at the Adelaide Road Presbyterian Church in Dublin, and served on the committee that revised Scotland’s The Church Hymnody.
