By Gracious Powers

Author: Fred Pratt Green, 1903-2000; Dietrich Bonhöffer, 1906-1945 Meter: 11.10.11.10 Appears in 18 hymnals Scripture: 1 Corinthians 11:25 First Line: By gracious pow'rs so wonderfully sheltered Lyrics: 1 By gracious pow'rs so wonderfully sheltered, and confidently waiting come what may, we know that God is with us night and morning, and never fails to greet us each new day. 2 Yet is this heart by its old foe tormented, still evil days bring burdens hard to bear; Oh, give our frightened souls the sure salvation, for which, O Lord, you taught us to prepare. 3 And when this cup you give is filled to brimming with bitter suffering, hard to understand, we take it thankfully and without trembling out of so good and so beloved a hand. 4 Yet when again in this same world you give us the joy we had, the brightness of your sun, we shall remember all the days we lived through and our whole life shall then be yours alone. 5 By gracious pow'rs so faithfully protected, so quietly, so wonderfully near, I'll live each day in hope, with you beside me, and go with you through every coming year. Used With Tune: O QUANTA QUALIA

Jesus Christus unser Heiland

8 Hätt'st du dir was kunnt erwerben, was dürst ich dann für dich sterben? Let not an unrepentant heart Prove hurtful to me there. 2 Lord, I confess my sins And mourn their wretched bands; A contrite heart is sure to find Forgiveness at Your hands. 3 Your body and Your blood, Once slain and shed for me, Are taken at Your table, Lord, In blest reality. 4 Search not how this takes place, This wondrous mystery; God can accomplish vastly more Than what we think could be. 5 O grant, most blessed Lord, That earth and hell combined May not about this sacrament Raise doubt within my mind. 6 Oh, may I never fail To thank You day and night For Your true body and true blood, O God, my peace and light. To Avert from Us God's Wrath

Author: Martin Luther; Christian Ignatius Latrobe; Dirk French Meter: 7.7.7.7.7.7 Appears in 16 hymnals Scripture: 1 Corinthians 11:23-32 Lyrics: 1 To avert from men God’s wrath, Jesus suffered in our stead; by an ignominious death he a full atonement made; and by his most precious blood brought us, sinners, nigh to God. 2 Christ bids each afflicted soul "Come that I may soothe your grief. No one who is strong and whole needs a doctor for relief; therefore have no fear, draw nigh, that your want I may supply." 3 But examine first your case, whether you be in the faith; do you long for pard’ning grace? Is your only hope his death? Then, how e’er your soul’s oppressed, Come, you are a worthy guest. 4 They who Jesus’ mercy knows are from wrath and envy freed; love unto our neighbor shows that we are his flock indeed; thus we may in all our ways show forth our Redeemer’s praise. Author: Horatius Bonar, 1808-89 Meter: 7.7.7.6 Appears in 16 hymnals Scripture: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 Lyrics: 1 For the bread and for the wine, for the pledge that seals him mine, for the words of love divine, we give you thanks, O Lord. 2 For the feast of love and peace, bidding all our sorrows cease, foretaste of the kingdom's bliss, we give you thanks, O Lord. 3 This the bread and this the wine, yet to faith the solemn sign of the heavenly and divine! we give you thanks, O Lord. 4 Till he comes we take the bread, type of him on whom we feed, him who lives and once was dead: we give you thanks, O Lord. 5 Till he comes we take the cup; as we at his table sup eye and heart are lifted up: we give you thanks, O Lord. 6 For that coming here foreshown, for that day to man unknown, for the glory and the throne, we give you thanks, O Lord.
