Annie Herbert

1844 - 1932 Hymnal Number: 13 Author of "When the Mists Have Rolled Away" in Old Time Glory Annie Elvira Hubbart (Herbert) Barker USA 1844-1932. Born in Leon, NY, she received some education at Randolph Academy in her home county. She later taught there herself. Gospel songs were becoming popular in evangelistic services in the 19th century. She became a successful public recitalist, studying at the Buffalo School of Oratory and with Anna Randall Diehl of New York and Professor Leonard of Boston. After marrying in 1879, she moved to Montana with her husband, from that area. Along with other pioneers. She claimed those years as the best of her life. In 1888 they moved again to San Rafael, CA, he being an invalid at that time. She lived there the rest of her life. John Perry

1877 - 1969 Person Name: Mrs. C. M. Alexander Hymnal Number: 33 Author of "Anywhere with Jesus" in Old Time Glory Dixon, Helen Cadbury Alexander (b. 1877, Birmingham, Eng.; d. Mar. 1, 1969, Birmingham, Eng.) was the daughter of Richard Cadbury, a prominent British industrialist and philanthropist who was a member of the Quaker fellowship and keenly interested in evangelical mission work; attended the university and spent some time in Germany, studying music and language; in 1904 married Charles M. Alexander, songleader with evangelist R. A. Torrey; traveled with her husband and assisted him in his worldwide ministry with both Torrey and J. Wilbur Chapman (q.v.) until his death in 1920; assisted J. Kennedy Maclean in writing the biography, Charles M. Alexander: A Romance of Song and Soul-Winning, 1921; in 1924 married Amsji C. Dixon. J. Edwin McConnell

1892 - 1954 Person Name: J. E. M. Hymnal Number: 6 Author of "Whosoever Meaneth Me" in Old Time Glory McConnell attended the Webb Preparatory School in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, and William Jewell College, Liberty, Missouri. He worked with his father (former pastor of the First Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) in evangelism meetings for some time, playing the piano, singing, and directing the choir. William Grum

1878 - 1931 Person Name: W. G. Hymnal Number: 41 Author of "Victory Ahead" in Old Time Glory Reverend William Grum was born July 14, 1878 in Camden NJ to Benjamin and Caroline "Carrie" Grum. His early years were spent at 215 Market Street, where his father had a confectionary. The family had moved to 544 Vine Street by 1900, Benjamin Grum worked then as a letter carrier, a position he would hold until his retirement in the 1920s. William Grum married in the early 1900s. His wife, the former Lena Purdy, bore him two children, daughters Lena and Beatrice. Benjamin and Carrie Grum. were still living at 544 Vine Street in April of 1930 when the Census was enumerated. Mrs. Grum remained at the address after her husband passed, and was still living there in the fall of 1933. By 1920 William Grum had entered the ministry. He pastored at the Kaighn Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church in Camden, and at the First Methodist Episcopal Church in Gloucester City NJ, where he was stationed when the Census was taken in January of 1920. The family home was at 335 Main Street. When daughter Beatrice Crum graduated from Camden High School in 1923, the family was back in North Camden, living at 547 Vine Street. By 1930 Rev. Grum had been sent to serve at the Woodlynne Methodist Episcopal Church in Woodlynne NJ. The Grum family made their home in April of 1930 at 2220 Woodlynne Avenue, the corner of Woodlynne Avenue and Linden Street, in Woodlynne. Sadly, Reverend Grum died suddenly while visiting his mother at the family home at 544 Vine Street in 1931. A talented musician, singer, and composer of religious music, his best known composition perhaps is the hymn "Victory Ahead", written in 1905. Reverend William Grum also had talent as a painter. He had completed a large painting, "The Old Rugged Cross", which stood 15 feet wide by 18 feet tall, shortly before his death. 1844 - 1907 Person Name: J. S. Norris Hymnal Number: 107 Composer of "[I can hear my Savior calling]" in Old Time Glory Rv John Samuel Norris United Kingdom/USA 1844-1907. Born at West Cowes, Isle of Wight, UK, he emigrated to the US when young and attended school in Canada. He was ordained a Methodist minister in Oshawa, ON, in 1868. Over the next decade he pastored at churches in Canada, NY, and WI. He switched to the Congregationalist denomination in 1878, serving churches in Mondovi, Shullsburg, and Hixton, WI, and Grand Rapids, MI. From 1882 -1901 he held pastorates at Ames, Webster City, Parkersburg, Peterson, and Tripoli, IA.. He died in Chicago, IL. John Perry

1876 - 1951 Hymnal Number: 54 Composer of "[I’ve a home prepared where the saints abide]" in Old Time Glory Born: June 29, 1876, Conecuh County, Alabama. Died: October 8, 1951, Waco, Texas. Buried: Oakwood Cemetery, Waco, Texas. A Methodist, Dean taught singing schools for 40 years, wrote some 500 songs, and for four years headed the Trio Music Company. With Franklin Eiland and Homer Elliott, he founded the Southern Development Normal Music School in Waco, Texas. --www.hymntime.com/tch/
