We bring you, Lord, our prayer and praise

Author: Timothy Dudley-Smith, b. 1926 Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 4 hymnals Scripture: Luke 11:2 Lyrics: 1 We bring you, Lord, our prayer and praise that every child of earth should live and grow in freedom's ways, in dignity and worth. 2 We praise for such a task begun to serve each other's need, for every cause of justice won, for every fetter freed. 3 Our prayers are for a world in pain where force and fear prevail, the plough becomes the sword again, and hope and harvests fail. 4 Alike our prayer and praise express the wants of humankind, that those in bondage and distress their larger freedoms find. 5 So may we still maintain the fight till earth's oppressions cease before the universal right to liberty and peace. 6 In Christ we learn to love and care and spread his truth abroad; and in his Name we lift our prayer: 'Your kingdom come, O Lord.' O Lord, Who Hast This Table Spread

Author: Edward A. Collier Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Luke 11:11 Lyrics: 1 O Lord, who hast this table spread, what royal fare thou dost provide, thy broken body for our bread, the cup from thine own wounds supplied! 2 But e'en this bread will be a stone, this cup of blessing mock our thirst, unless thy gracious hand alone shall bless and give them as at first. 3 O come, then, Lord, and here preside: give thine own welcome to each guest, nor let it be to love denied to lean confiding on thy breast. 4 Then rich the portion thou wilt give; no more the hung'ring heart can need; thyself the bread by which we live, thy precious blood our drink indeed. 5 Thus shall thy cross be lifted up till thou return, the King confessed, to call thine own with thee to sup within thy Father's Kingdom blest. 6 O Lord, on high now glorified, when wilt thou come to bring us home? Hear thou thy Spirit and thy Bride, and come, Lord Jesus, quickly come. Used With Tune: ROCKINGHAM

When Afflictions Sore Oppress You

Author: J. G. Olearius, 1611-84; F. E. Cox, 1812-97 Meter: 8.7.8.7.7.7.8.8 Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: Luke 11:9-13 Lyrics: 1 When afflictions sore oppress you, Low with grief and anguish bowed, Then to earnest prayer address you; Prayer will help you, through the cloud, Still to see your Savior near, Under ev'ry cross you bear; By the light His Word doth lend you, Prayer will joy and comfort send you. 2 None shall ever be confounded, Who in God will freely trust; Though they be by woes surrounded, God's a Rock to all the just. Though you deem He hears you not, Still your wants are ne'er forgot; Cry to Him when storms assail you, Let your courage never fail you. 3 Call on God, knock, seek, implore Him, 'Tis the Christian's noblest skill; He who comes with faith before Him Meets with help and favor still: Who on God most firmly rest Are the wisest and the best; God will with such strength inbue them, Ne'er shall any foe subdue them. 4 Learn to mark God's wondrous dealing With the people that He loves; When His chast'ning hand they're feeling, Then their faith the strongest proves. God is nigh, and notes their tears, Though He answers not, He hears; Pray with faith, for though He try you, No good thing can God deny you. 5 Ponder all God's truth can teach you, Let His word your footsteps guide; Satan's wiles shall never reach you, Though he draw the world aside. Lo! God's truth is thy defense, Light, and hope, and confidence: Trust in God, He'll not deceive you, Pray, and all your foes will leave you. Topics: Persistent Faith; Lent 2 Used With Tune: FREU DICH SEHR
