Charles Jeffries

(Beckenham, Kent, UK, 1896--December 10, 1972, Bromley, London). Church of England. Son of C.D. Jeffries. Married Myrtle Bennett, 1921. Graduated Malvern College and Magdalen College, Oxford. Lieutenant, Wilts Regiment, British Army, 1915-1917; Second Class Clerk, Colonial Office, 1917-1920; Principal, Colonial Office, 1920-1930; Assistant Secretary and Establishment Officer, Colonial Office, 1930-1939; Assistant Under-Secretary of State, Colonial Office, 1939-1947; Joint Department Under-Secretary of State, Colonial Office, 1947-1956. Vice president for many years of the United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel; member of the governing board of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge; member of the House of Laity, Anglican Church, 1950-1955. Officer, Order of the British Empire, 1937; Knight Commander of St. Michael and St. George, 1943. He wrote numerous books about Britain's colonial empire, and numerous articles on Christian unity. In his more famous book, Towards the Centre (1958), he described the "Centre" not as Rome, Canterbury, or Jerusalem, but Christ, who draws all men to himself. He wrote one hymn, "Speak Forth Your Word," which was first published in The Hymn Book of the Anglican Church of Canada and the United Church of Canada (1975). --C. Bernard Ruffin, DNAH Archives

C. Russell Hurditch

1839 - 1908 Author of "The Atoning Blood" in Melodies of Grace and Truth Hurditch, Charles Russell, was born in Exeter, Dec. 20, 1839. In 1854 he underwent a spiritual change which led him subsequently to undertake religious work in some of the villages of Devonshire, and afterwards to succeed the late Mr. Henry Hull as the Secretary of the Young Men's Christian Association, Stafford Street, London. In 1865 he published The London Hymn Book for Prayer Meetings and Special Services. This was revised in 1880. In 1873 he also publishedThe Enlarged London Hymn Book, a Collection of Hymns for Public, Social, and Private Use. Of the smaller work more than half a million copies have been sold; and of the enlarged book the 86th thousand was issued in 1881. To the first (1865) he contributed Nos. 10 and 11 given below: the rest were published in the second book (1873). 1. Arise, ye saints, arise and sing. God is Light. 2. Arm of the Lord, awake! God is love; "No. 2,"about 1859;" No. 11, when he received the invitation to proceed to London, as noted above; No. 15, for the baptism of his youngest son; and No. 25 for a Conference which was held in London. 1842 - 1905 Person Name: Mrs. M. E. Gates Author of "Rise on the Shadowed Nations" in Missionary Hymnal Gates, Mary Cornelia, née Bishop, daughter of William S. Bishop, of Rochester, N.Y., was married in 1873 to Merrill E. Gates, Secty. to the U. S. Indian Commissioners. Her hymns:— 1. Send Thou, 0 Lord, to every place [Missions], dated 1886; 2. Gates was a descendent of Roger Williams, founder of Rhode Island; daughter of William S. Bishop of Rochester, New York; and faculty member of Leroy Female Seminary. In 1873, she married Merrill E. Gates, Secretary to the U. S. Indian Commissioners and later president of Rutgers and Amherst Colleges. Mary belonged to the Woman’s Board for Foreign Missions of the Reformed Church in America (Dutch Reformed), and contributed to numerous periodicals, including The Independent, The Atlantic Monthly, The Christian Intelligencer, and The Youth’s Companion.
